Yes. And cars primary cause of 91 percent of car accidents.
joeevans··on Ask HN: I dropped out of school at 17. Freelance is my only hope. Advice?
Feelancing is your only hope?

Take a look at the fine print of IT/programming jobs ads:

Master Degree in Computer Science blah blah blah... or equivalent experience.

If you translate 'equivalent experience' into it's true meaning, it reads: you are able to do the work.

Companies know as much as anyone that it's a crap shoot whether an engineer with a degree will do any better than one without.

The owner of the near 30 person company I work at, a very capable and respected programmer himself, dropped out of high school, and does millions of dollars in business.

As far as your age? That makes no difference whatsoever these days.

wow... integrated OAuth and ACL to the site or database... and code hot swaps while the site is running...
joeevans··on Zotonic - A High Performance Web Framework in Erlang
We live in amazing times where a framework/tool/hybrid like this pops up as complete as it is, with the sort of instructions for installation that used to take a year to appear.

I'm going to get it installed, just to celebrate that!

joeevans··on Mugged by a Mug Shot Online
I generally agree. It's interesting, though, to think how much they in fact do probably alter results. I'm sure people "want" things that don't appear on the first page, because there'd be a general freak out if they did. I think they probably have more cultural latitude in determining which ads they'll accept than which results they'll display.

Another option they have is to simply set the cost of mug shot related ad clicks higher. Since their pricing determinations are somewhat mysterious, it would be harder to critique them for that. Ultimately, it would probably come down to an ethical stance for them, because they would just be making less money as a result of what I would consider to be a more ethical decision. As it is, they are making money off of a system that appears to be wrecking careers.

Google is under no freedom of information restrictions; it is a business. They can choose to rank mug shot sites high. They can choose to accept or not accept AdWords money for mug shot related businesses.
joeevans··on Procrastination should be solved by lighting fires, not filling buckets
The reason a post like this will get so much action on a site like hacker news is that programming sucks as an activity, and alternative activities are more interesting.

Thinking about programming is fun, finishing a program is fun, solving a little programming puzzle can be fun, but programming in general sucks as an activity.

That's why programmers procrastinate, because programming sucks.

joeevans··on Why OpenHeatMap is banned from Github
Ah, ok... I didn't know they had a license picker. Cool!
joeevans··on Why OpenHeatMap is banned from Github
Why doesn't GitHub make it easier to research or attach an open source license to code?
joeevans··on Visualizations that make no sense
I agree. Of course, including the context would make a number of the visualizations make sense, which would defeat the purpose of the site. Of course, visualizations that make sense with no context are the sort I guess the creator of this site likes. Someday, we'll all get our news in nice graphics, without all that bothersome reading and thinking that goes along with context.

Actually, the 'Becoming a Data Scientist' one is awesome. The caption derisively says 'Disconnected subway map? Sequential, linear relationships?', but that is exactly what it is. I searched for it and read up on it, and the author thought he'd represent learning paths as subway routes. Data science is now a lot of tools, and I got into reading this map. I know probably 20% of the tools there at the moment. Actually, I found and bookmarked that viz, because it's going to be handy. Sure, it's not perfect, but I like it!

Developers! Developers! Developers!
joeevans··on Pluralsight acquires PeepCode
Sweet! I'm a fan of both. I of course have been following PeepCode, but right now I'm doing Alan Dipert's Clojure course on PluralSight. It's nice to have my worlds come together.
joeevans··on Why I cancelled my TechEd talks
Duh. Microsoft.
