joeconway··on Review my project – Interestin
As an aside, it honestly confuses me why the vast majority of company blogs don't have an actual link to their home page, but instead prefer to have the header link to their blog subdomain.
joeconway··on iOS 7.1
A warning for any iOS developers. XCode 5.1 is not on the app store yet so updating to 7.1 means you can't test on your updated device for a while
joeconway··on Search on after Malaysia Airlines flight vanishes
I appreciate that radar only works above a certain altitude, but can someone explain to me why a vehicle worth > $200m doesn't have a GPS unit broadcasting over longwave radio, satellite connection or some other remote communication means. I feel like I'm missing something fundamental.
joeconway··on Flappy Bird is proof that no one knows what the audience wants
Good for them, it is always nice to see indie developers succeed. I didn't mean to come across negatively, if that's what your disparaging quote was inferring.
joeconway··on Flappy Bird is proof that no one knows what the audience wants
I have been wondering if the developer has made much money from the app at all really. In spite of the overwhelmingly vast number of downloads, the adverts only show whilst you are playing the game. Aside from the momentary lag when they appear, most users probably don't even notice them because they are concentrating so hard. Users are almost guaranteed to pay the adverts no attention lest they risk the possibility of sacrificing their amazing score of 1.
joeconway··on Show HN: Kurikku – Rap Genius for Code
A lot of the commenters on here are looking at this in terms of normal code commenting or something similiar. However, for something more akin to a tutorial, having in depth line by line breakdown in a easy to ingest manner is very nice as a concept.
joeconway··on Introducing our smart contact lens project (for diabetics)
I really feel your pain. The reason why I love this meter so much is that it doesn't require a £50 USB cable (The usb is built into the meter) the proprietry software is a standalone jar on the USB device which is amazingly quite good. But best of all when you plug the USB device in it mounts as removable storage with a db.sqlite file which is easily accessible and a simple .dump reveals the sensible DB schema. It's really refreshing to be able to get my data and do what I want with it.
joeconway··on Introducing our smart contact lens project (for diabetics)
There are severe drawbacks to CGM like scarring, infection and most importantly the expense. In the UK CGMs and even insulin pumps are almost impossible to get most places on the NHS.

joeconway··on Link to delete your Google+ account
Given the scope and variety of dependencies people have on Google products, I feel as though this should also very clearly state what this does not delete. E.G. "this does NOT delete your Gmail account"
joeconway··on [dead]
because rapgenius have ideas beyond their station and its amusing to see people acting like children, spoken to so.
joeconway··on Show HN: We built Triage, an iOS app that unites all your dev tools
Hey, this looks like something which could be really useful. I would suggest putting labels or hover text over the icons for the services you're supporting though. I can only actually recognise 5 or 6 of them
joeconway··on Show HN: CaaS - Coffee as a Service
Oh yeah, I've seen a few places around Shoreditch selling that, its pretty nice. I didn't realise they did subscriptions
joeconway··on Show HN: CaaS - Coffee as a Service
using coffee which was roasted over a month ago is probably a deal breaker for a lot of people who would use a service like this. Good examples of coffee websites: www.hasbean.co.uk www.yorkcoffeeemporium.co.uk
joeconway··on Carry Your Instrument On The Plane – It's The Law
As a guitarist moving to NY in the new year, I've spent the last week obsessing over if I can bring precious instrument with me. Now I need to find out if this legislation applies to an american airline flying into american airspace from the UK (fingers crossed)
joeconway··on Ask HN: Hacker News Person Of the Year
Bill Gates
joeconway··on Spotify Raises $250 Million, Valued Above $4 Billion
Maybe they could offer a tiered subscription model wherein heavy users pay more?
joeconway··on Spotify Raises $250 Million, Valued Above $4 Billion
Your point is a little vague. I'm not suggesting at all that I should decide the distribution model. I'm just suggesting that its a shame that support for the people who make the content has to come from outside such a useful service
joeconway··on Spotify Raises $250 Million, Valued Above $4 Billion
Yeah, I try and do what I can to help artists I like. Unfortunately (and bizarrely) I think most people couldn't care less about the artist once they have the music.
joeconway··on Spotify Raises $250 Million, Valued Above $4 Billion
I find myself torn with Spotify. I _really_ love the product and company and probably use it at a minimum 5 hours a day every single day. However I really wish artists actually earnt money from it.

joeconway··on Why indie developers can't win on the App Store
What's the group called?
joeconway··on The Spark Inspector is now available in Xcode, just like Instruments
How well does this compare to Reveal?
joeconway··on Full archives of Game Developer magazine
I feel like I've discovered this a little too late. Does anyone have any good suggestions for other quality software based magazines?
joeconway··on Show HN: Explore music through adjectives
This is a really nice idea. Thought about making it into a Spotify app or making an API?
joeconway··on WWDC 2013 – June 10-14
Same. I'm wondering how much benefit there is to be gained by going as the videos are being posted during the conference this year.
joeconway··on Draw UML Sequence Diagrams with new Javascript library
I'd really love a web service where I can do this for various kinds of UML. All desktop apps I've used for this are just awful.
joeconway··on ShowHN: Tracker.pm - Our In-house PM tool goes public
Thanks Dan! Basically we thought that Trello is great but we wanted:

-The ability to make time estimates for each task

-Nice email integration, with the ability to reply to notification emails to add comments to the tasks

-Number of task and hourly counts for the columns

joeconway··on ShowHN: Tracker.pm - Our In-house PM tool goes public
We at Leto love to build our own tools to make our work easier. We think that one of them, Tracker, is ready to help other people who want an alternative PM tool to the big players. We thought that Jira was too heavy, PivotalTracker had too much jargon and Trello was on the right track but not quite right.

We've taken all the best ideas from the different tools available and made them into something we really enjoying working with. We'd love to know what the people on Hacker News think of it.

EDIT: we have an app too, with iPad and Android support around the corner! appstore.com/trackerpm

joeconway··on Is it OK to hold credit card numbers in cookies, Santander?
For anyone interested, if you want to see the information it is storing then take the NewUniversalCookie and seperate it by the #'s then you can see two base64 strings which are easily decoded

The scary part is that the 'alias' id is actually one of the 2 passwords needed to log into the account. So in fact if someone had that and my card number all they would need is the 5 digit numerical code to log in
