joe_mamba··on The Kimi K3 Moment
We're still in the early days of the AI industry timeline(relative to traditional industries). Not everything has yet been litigated.

Taxes on AI subscriptions or AI capable hardware, to financially compensate IP holders for (potential) IP theft, could very well arrive in the near future, once the industry is mature.

If this shocks you and sounds preposterous, I'll remind you that in several EU countries, we still pay extra taxes on any and all storage mediums and on devices with built-in storage (tapes, CDs, DVDs, HDDs, SSDs, tablets, phones, etc) simply because they can be used to store pirated content, decisions based on laws from 50-100 years ago, and the money goes to the national unions and associations of music and arts IP holders. It's basically a lobby pushed and government legalized extortion racket that no voter agrees with or can change but has no choice but to conform either way.

So I guarantee you in the future, it will be the same for AI subscriptions and hardware capable of running LLMs locally. Every time you purchase a Claude or ChatGPT subscription, an Nvidia GPU, Intel/AMD SoC PC or an Apple/Qualcomm powered smartphone, you'll pay a government enforced tax to the likes of Sony, Axel Springer, etc. for licensing their IP, whether you want to or not. In the EU at least. US maybe not.

joe_mamba··on LG monitors silently install software through Windows Update without consent
>I don't know what Microsoft is thinking even allowing and enabling this sort of thing

This has been a feature since Windows 7, and it worked great since it would pull all necessary drivers after installation without you going hunting on the internet like in the Windows XP days.

Just that no HW manufacturer thought to push spyware in their driver repos at that point to improve some team's KPIs.

If people are practically poorer and less well off than before, does it matter to them that the country is on paper NOT economically stagnating?

Shoving a graph in their face with a made up number won't change their economic situation.

Sure, let's say GDP went up 5%, but then everything that matters like housing and healthcare went up 10-20%. Average workers aren't the winners of this mythical economic growth we're told we need to keep prioritizing.

What use is GDP growth if most of it just gets concentrated in the top 10% of asset holders and everyone else in the trenches keeping society going, ends up worse off in a decaying society.

That's how we are now massively outputting homeless junkies who gave up on society and Luigis who want to shoot the elites responsible for this, because the system does not work for them.

Now, the elites can avoid the homeless junkies their economic policies create, by living in gated communities in the suburbs and chauffeuring their kids to private schools, but the Luigis are more tricky to dodge because they're smart and motivated, that's why the like of the EU, UK, AU, etc are expediting privacy invasive laws under the guise of "protecting kids" to make sure any future Luigis will be preemptively dealt with the moment they speak ill of the king and the nobility.

joe_mamba··on 42% of adults rely on their parents for financial support
Same in Austria and other old wealthy EU countries that have since economically stagnated or even declined.

All that seems to matters today, is that the GDP number keeps going up at any and all cost, regardless of long term externalities and second order effect to society. Kina like Saturn devouring his children.

Like sure, now you need to wait 4 months to see a public healthcare specialist compared to only 2 weeks 8 years ago, but the GDP number is higher now than back then, so obviously we must be better off today than in the past, right? RIGHT?!

That's why EU politicians are rushing to implement free speech crackdowns, invasive privacy laws using dictatorial techniques, like last week's Chat Control 1.0. They know they're on borrowed time before the majority of the population wises up and turns against them for the effects of the unpopular policies they pushed that lead to their decline in quality of life and purchasing power.

joe_mamba··on 42% of adults rely on their parents for financial support
Europe in general maybe outside of some CEE, DACH, Nordics/Benelux is pretty fucked for the youth. Without help from parents or inherited housing you're fucked. You get American CoL with African wages. Joking of course, but you get the point.
joe_mamba··on 42% of adults rely on their parents for financial support
What do you call the situation where your parents depend on your support? I helped my dad with a 6000 Euro out of pocket surgery so he can regain the use of his shoulder. And I'm an average working class Europoor, not a stock broker. And my mom is paying some of the bills for my grandma because she can't afford the bills on her ~300 Euro pension.

>An electronic Siren's Song if you will.

Notifications on your smartphone that's always on you are way better for that purpose, than on a device that's tied to your desk.

Add Gacha mechanics for +100% extra damage.

Devices tied to your desk are actually very good for tech detox.

So if getting you hooked was OpenAI's goal with this, they definitely missed by a 1000 miles.

joe_mamba··on Germany set to restrict its Freedom of Information Act
Same thing happened in Romania.

The previous president was burning tens of million of Euros on renting private jets on the taxpayer's dime for trips that weren't related to his duties, and when reporters wanted to investigate this misuse, the government came forward and called the president's travel history (and expenses) a national security topic and remove it from the freedom of information.

Isn't it convenient how you can just cover corruption under the rug by invoking national security? I'm surprised it hasn't been used more often.

This is totally not the EU version of China's social credit score system and WeChat SSO system.

It will totally not be used to sanction you the moment you become a nuisance to the EU elites by saying "wrong speech" that goes against their mandated doctrine or pointing out their acts of corruption or dismantling of democracy.

The EU building in Brussels even has the word "DEMOCRACY" plastered on the front in large bold letters[1], in case you forgot.

Switzerland absolutely complies to EU (and US) demands for a long time now, when it comes to prosecuting crimes.

Swiss privacy and anonymity is a myth from a bygone era.

joe_mamba··on Telegram's t.me domain has been suspended
>But Telegram hasn't engaged in that, some of their users have.

Yeah, but government workers just want a legal slam dunk to call it a day and collect the glory, and it's always easier to go after the platform where the crimes are being discussed, rather than after the individual users actually committing the crimes.

It's how government, prosecution and law enforcement jobs are incentivized to operate.

>The US and continental European systems were both designed in concert and in opposition to how the old European monarchies worked.

Don't know the exact details about the US, but if you look at how the some EU countries and the EU is run today, it really isn't that much different than European monarchies of old in practice, even if on paper it's different.

Like, you have nobles from the ancient von der Leyen German noble family appointed to leadership positions by falling upwards via no direct election by the people, enforcing unpopular laws like chat control, that were rejected 3 times, by calling an emergency election during summer time when opposition was on vacation. And if you vocally criticize the nobility online too much, they'll ban your content on social media for some BS reason at best, or send police to your house with court orders to intimidate you at worst.

This isn't in opposition to monarchies, we just replaced monarchies with another form of power structure that has the same goal: keep the peasants quiet, obedient and paying taxes. There's a reason history keeps repeating itself: A fish coming from water will only know water.

joe_mamba··on Wikipedia escapes Category 1 designation under the UK Online Safety Act for now
Probably because the US was founded by the immigrants who fled because they hated the way the system worked in their original countries, and designed a system that's diametral opposed to that, for better and for worse.
joe_mamba··on DOGE is done. What happened to its records?
>because governments have multiple arms that aren't revenue generating

True, very true. I don't want my government turning a profit, but I do want my government being accountable and efficient on how it spends my taxes and what it gives me back for them. If I keep paying more and more but get less and less quality, I want some audits and changes to be done to fix this. "Government not being revenue generating" is not the answer here.

>We have to stop looking at volume-of-stuff as a useful metric.

Unfortunately, "volume of stuff" is how governments allocate funding, for stuff like education, healthcare, research, etc

Any kind of quality metrics, outside of the free market capitalist "how much profit you made?", will be gamed within a few years to get the same results, for things that aren't designed to turn a profit, since there's no fair and objective metric in that case.

I have Messager app fatigue at this point (where I live).

- Doctors offices and official services use SMS.

- Some of my close family and friends use Signal (on my pressure).

- The distant boomers use Facebook Messenger

- With the younger people they use Snapchat.

- Almost everyone else in the country uses Whatsapp as that's the dominant messaging app.

- My friends who live in Berlin use Telegram

- Online communities for tinkering and foss projects require Discord.

God I miss the 2000s.

Greed knows no limits. That's how polls showed the happiest people earn around 60-80k a year, and both the people below and above that threshold, reported to be less and less happy the less they made and also the more they made.

It's as if the more money you make, the more you need to feel fulfilled, so people start stealing and scamming to cover a self inflicted psychological money deficit.

>This is just another edition of Google "we only hire the best" with nothing to show for it for 20 years.

Google was "hiring the best" not because they needed those new hiries to build something to show for, they were hiring them to deprive their competitors of talent using their unlimited ad revenue warchest.

The entire tech scene during the ZIRP era, even more so during COvid, was just adult daycare for smart people, a giant Fugazi that came crashing down. And if the AI bubble pops, it will crash even harder.

> The Reagan-era "greed is good" thing never really died here (among other places).

"Greed is good" is the MO everywhere on the planet now. Everyone I know in EU is trying to cash in as much as they can while the going is still good because they feel the ladder constantly being pulled from them (layoffs and wage stagnation everywhere, housing costs massively outpacing wage growth, etc). Either from scamming their company or from scamming the government and welfare system.

And the compound the issue, the government trying to "fix" this only makes things worse as they just add more taxes on the honest working class people in their quest to tax "the rich" and give to the poor, which is only a populist measure for votes, nothing that actually fixes the problem since none of the globalist robber barons are affected by such policies as all their wealth is tied in a network of international foundations, charities, trust funds, etc. so when you add a 3 Euro tax on Aliexpress items, you're only gonna hurt the guy trying to repair his TV and washing machine, not the real estate magnate living in Monaco.

I don't think we can escape this downward spiral in any peaceful and democratic way. That's probably why the EU is pushing all these privacy invading laws lately, to catch and crush any public uprisings before they happen.

Crazy how many people try to find excuses for crime. There's people living on fractions of that that don't commit crime. No, income is no excuse.

>I've seen individuals

Societies as a collection of all individuals matter more than individual individuals. That's why Japan is the way Japan is and India the way India is.

>Additionally, based on what's going on in the world, I would say that there are very clear signs that a high-trust society is formed when adults with positive behaviors are in power, and a low-trust society is formed when adults with negative behaviors gain power.

Every society on the planet from Japan to North America has its own robber barons that are above the law, the difference is in Taiwan, Japan or Singapore I'm not afraid of getting mugged, broken into or sexually assaulted on the streets at night, or having my bike stolen, and people queue politely and orderly for riding the bus.

And in democracies, the behavior of those elected into power is a direct reflection of that society and its population. Trump didn't make America like that, American people made America's leader be like that. Trump is a reflection of your society that's why he got into power, because people see themselves in him.

Don't blame your leader for how your society looks, blame your society for your leader looks.

There's homeless people living on the streets or people in jail who destroyed their lives for way less than 95k. Often for nothing, like throwing a punch over a parking spot argument.

You'd be surprised how far down poor impulsive choices can drag you down even when there's no money on the line.
