joe_guy··on California Revealed as Worst US Emitter of Sulfuryl Fluoride
The tldr

> The researchers put 85 percent of California's sulfuryl fluoride emissions to structural fumigation practices to get rid of pests, such as termites. This is done by sealing structure inside an airtight tent and pumping the pesticide inside.

joe_guy··on Bradford pear trees banned in few states – More are looking to eradicate them
> it's contributing to the spread of related invasive trees that are taking over some urban green spaces and pastureland and encroaching on forests.

I'll save you from the auto playing view port locker video.

joe_guy··on FCC Officially Raises Minimum Broadband Metric from 25Mbps to 100Mbps
The definition appears to be more for the government than marketing.

> Raising the speed metric is important because it helps the commission determine which areas in the country are receiving adequate internet speeds, and if more government funding is necessary. In 2015, the FCC raised the metric from 4Mbps/1Mbps to 25Mbps/3Mbps. But since then, US senators, government watchdogs, and FCC officials have urged the commission to raise the metric even higher, citing the US’s growing reliance on internet services and apps.

joe_guy··on Ask HN: In the 90s, did programmers job-hop frequently?
Are there any open positions?
joe_guy··on Union, intersection, difference, and more are coming to JavaScript Sets
An annoyance I have is "add" does not return a boolean indicating if the set already contains the entry.

Most runtimes do this to prevent the need for a double lookup cost by doing "has" then "add."

It's a common pattern for when the set is used to either know when to or when not to do expensive work.

joe_guy··on Union, intersection, difference, and more are coming to JavaScript Sets
> JS sets are plenty useful. Sometimes you want reference equality for objects

An example of where I've found this useful is object cycle detection.

joe_guy··on Mushroom Sprouting Out of a Living Frog
Fungus isn't a plant, though.

Mushrooms are to fungus what an apple is to a tree (sort of). They require moisture but their nutrients come from decomposing.

Now imagine what all of this means for the frog.

joe_guy··on Deleting and destroying finished movies
They're turning $10 into $3 except at the scale of millions of dollars.

What hack or gaming did they perform?

joe_guy··on Marlon Brando Was a Secret Tech Geek and Photoshop Ace (2015)
I heard something like this about Guys And Dolls, too.

> Brando, knowing how much Sinatra hated cheesecake, had purposely flubbed each take so that Sinatra would have to eat piece after piece of cheesecake. The next day, they came back and shot the scene perfectly on the first take.

joe_guy··on Driver hack lets you run Linux after Windows BSODs, no reboot required
What a strange conclusion for the author to reach.

What they're doing requires you to have code execution in the kernel. You're not just over the walls at that point, you've beheaded the king.

joe_guy··on Microsoft Announces the End of Windows Mixed Reality
You may just be multiplying their life time by business size, both of which are substantial.
joe_guy··on Ask HN: What did you buy or considering buying this Black Friday?
Do you roof mount them? How do things go this time of the year, assuming you're in a winter hemisphere, regarding portable-tier solar?

I did this maybe 12 years ago in a very small RV for 18 months. I found during winter I needed to be sure I drove around a bit more to charge up my batteries.

joe_guy··on Why Cities: Skylines 2 performs poorly
But when used in the way you're describing, valve forcing it in a developer instead of a developer opting in, it becomes a form of punishment.
joe_guy··on The glass at McCormick Place in Chicago is a lethal obstacle for birds
On the inside your feet would meet the wall first. On the outside your head would. They were outside.
joe_guy··on Parsing integers quickly with AVX-512
> We check whether some value exceeds 9,

If I'm seeing the misunderstanding here, the article with that statement is not talking about string length. They're talking about if non numerical input was given, ie, "a" would "exceed 9"

joe_guy··on YouTube will now show a blank homepage if you don’t have watch history on
A lot of very talented people make a living by posting videos to YouTube.

YouTube gives them a platform to remain independent content authors. It's not perfect. Nothing is.

YouTube shares ad revenue with them. That's their living. If you pay for premium, you do not see ads but YouTube still pays them for your view. I don't know the full details, I'm sure it isn't perfect.

I'm not sure what part of that you were concerned about knowing, but I am glad I can not view ads and that I can consume a lot of great independently content for a very minimal monthly cost.

joe_guy··on The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom Release
It may not be available in your area but even being stuck with Comcast it might be available.

With Comcast I pay $100/mo for gigabit and $20/mo for unlimited usage.

joe_guy··on Windows 10 is finished – Microsoft confirms 'version 22H2' is the last
I do wish the OS supported more taskbar features but you may want to look into Start11. They've rewritten the start menu and taskbar.
joe_guy··on Gmail is killing independent email
That's really good advice if you use the same password for everything. It becomes untenable with the, what, hundred+ websites I have a login for, each with their own password.
joe_guy··on Anti-recruiter prompt injection attack in LinkedIn profile
An fyi for anyone who didnt read several tweets deep:

> Just to be clear: I haven’t caught anyone with this yet, and the example from the first tweet is me trying it myself by cutting and pasting the prompt and then my updated profile into GPT-4 in ChatGPT. However, that seems like a good approximation of how someone might do this.

joe_guy··on Git security vulnerabilities announced
Running brew upgrade uses git, so it has to run the insecure git to upgrade.
joe_guy··on Mold linker: targeting macOS/iOS now requires a commercial license
No. And it's very intentional. You're not even legally allowed to run macOS VMs on non Apple hardware.

What's far worse than macOS not being a server OS is the hardware you're forced to contend with. Apple makes no server hardware. You end up with a disgusting hodgepodge of vendors making offerings that are largely redundancy in the way of massive falovers of mac minis. It's very unfortunate and makes self hosting or specifically (hardware or otherwise) needs extremely difficult.
