joe-mccann··on Show HN: elegant open-source pastebin server (node.js & redis)
Nice one. This is actually what I'm adding to Dillinger next - a Redis store for pastebin style links to markdown files.

dillinger.io

Dillinger is also 100% open source:

github.com/joemccann/dillinger

joe-mccann··on Can you build beautiful sites with Twitter Bootstrap? Hell yes
I'll be open sourcing all of Dillinger soon so the port will be in there.

A 6 hour project I put together including porting bootstrap to Stylus.

It's a web based markdown editor for proper WebKits at the moment.

joe-mccann··on JSConf EU – The How-To Guide

joe-mccann··on 30 Austin tech CEOs headed to California in search of workers
You're welcome, but the reason I explained is the answer is yes AND no. Yes, because gross dollar amount is less but No because take home is much more.
joe-mccann··on 30 Austin tech CEOs headed to California in search of workers
good point.
joe-mccann··on 30 Austin tech CEOs headed to California in search of workers
So if you make $140k in NYC, but only take home say $95k.

Or you make $120k, but take home $95k. Then it's about the same.

Now factor in cost of living. The $$ in your pocket is higher. If you more concerned with the nominal/gross dollar amount as opposed to net income, I feel you are looking at the wrong metric.

joe-mccann··on 30 Austin tech CEOs headed to California in search of workers
Not exactly. Oregon has rednecks as does upstate NY (I used to live there as well). The delta is the level of racism, bigotry and religious fundamentalism that plagues the state is significantly higher in Texas than other states. Hicks and bigots exist everywhere, but from my experience, Texas as a whole has more per capita than "coastal" states like Cali, Oregon or New York.
joe-mccann··on 30 Austin tech CEOs headed to California in search of workers
Are you asking me to share my specific income? That's not gonna happen. Let's do some hypotheticals.

$140k in NYC (this is a common salary/comp) $120k in Austin (this is a common salary/comp)

Nominal dollar amounts, yes, $20k is dollar for dollar, less. But now, factor in your taxes (NY State tax, Kings County, etc.) That $140k is now significantly less. Factor in cost of living being TWICE as much (literally, my rent per sq ft was more than twice what it was in Austin). You now are TAKING HOME less money.

So when I said net income, that's what I meant. If you're more concerned with a higher salary and less net income, then, well good luck to ya. I prefer to have more $$ in my pocket after it's all said and done.

joe-mccann··on 30 Austin tech CEOs headed to California in search of workers
I don't necessarily agree with this. I used to work at frog design and am now 100% independent (doing consulting/contract work). There are loads of companies from startups like Gowalla and Whaleshark to more established companies like Facebook and BazaarVoice. On top of that, there are some what I would consider "serious" startups with quality founders and funding, like Spacecraft and Mass Relevance.
joe-mccann··on 30 Austin tech CEOs headed to California in search of workers
My net income was significantly higher after leaving NYC. Let's put it that way =)
joe-mccann··on 30 Austin tech CEOs headed to California in search of workers
First, Austin is NOTHING like Texas. It is a beacon of progressive hope in an otherwise bass-ackwards state. I moved to Austin from New York City by way of Portland, Oregon so believe me, when I say that there is no way I would live in TEXAS; Austin is anything but that.

Also, other reasons Austin may be attractive to potential candidates:

1.) No state income tax. This is huge. If you make $140k a year in SF, you take home significantly less than you do in Texas. Also, there is no "city tax" like SF has.

2.) Cost of living is HALF, that's right, HALF of SF. Beautiful homes or urban condos are available and priced well below what you would spend buying OR renting in SF.

1 + 2 = lots of $$ in your pocket.

Not to mention the fact that Austin is arguably the hippest city in the country from a growth perspective. With events like ACL and SXSW (plus the thousands of live music shows throughout the rest of the year), the creative arts scene is flourishing.

Finally, the weather. It was 86 degrees, no humidity on December 19th last year. And yes, it is HOT in the summer, but with all that extra cash, you can go live in Europe for a few months to beat the heat.

joe-mccann··on Consulting is like selling crack (go work for a startup)
Epic linkbait.

"Consulting is like selling crack, if you want to be a founder of a startup - so go work for a startup."

should be the title. As an independent consultant I can only laugh at fallacies ridden in this article as if it applies to consulting in general.

"You get used to spending whatever you want on hardware, furniture, tools, and being fairly loose with your money...You get used to making that much money personally...bad habits, blah blah"

Give me a break. Proper personal finance is almost always relative to your income. If you make $250k/year or $50k/year it is still your responsibility to be responsible with your money. If you buy a $1M condo on a $250k/year salary and drive a Maserati, yes, you may have issues as a FOUNDER of a startup with no $$, but maybe you should have thought about investing or even saving (gasp) your money for padding when you started your startup. Common sense.

joe-mccann··on Google, Facebook and Zynga on a hiring binge in California
Totally. Trying to get me to leave Austin, TX which is half the cost of living AND has no state income tax is a tough sell to us devs here. Remote work is becoming more and more accepted lately as recruiters and companies are realizing people actually may not want to live in Cali. Granted, monthly in person meetings may be necessary but a flight and a hotel is a reasonable fee, IMO.
joe-mccann··on Are Silicon Valley’s Engineers Underpaid?
Here's a tip: move to Austin.

1) No state income tax. Read that again. 2) Cost of living is at least HALF of SF/SV/NYC 3) Real estate is actually affordable, even close in.

Now, I know there is the argument for needing to be in SF/SV for startups and tech, but Austin is a hotbed of tech activity and with more and more companies allowing remote work, it's worth a shot.

joe-mccann··on Charlie Wolf: Verizon iPhone Will ’Suck the Wind Out of Android's Growth'
The reason his assertion is false as the growth of Android is not tied to a single carrier or device. It has more to do with the OEMs adopting Android over Symbian or WP7. Motorola became cashflow positive by using Android. HTC can't keep up with demand.

Growth is not tied simply to the US market either. Android usage is exploding worldwide specifically with cheap handsets in huge countries such as those in SE Asia.

So Gruber, blinded by his own fanaticism, actually thinks Verizon's iPhone offering is going to compete with 50+ OEMs' adoption and usage of Android? I think not.

joe-mccann··on Goldman docs: Facebook income $355m, revenue $1.2bn (first 9 months of 2010)
True but I'm not mentioning earnings at all; simply based on revs seems like a LOFTY valuation.
joe-mccann··on Goldman docs: Facebook income $355m, revenue $1.2bn (first 9 months of 2010)
So based on $133/million per month in revs is ~ $1.6 billion this year.

Current valuation on SecondMarket = $50 billion

$50 billion/$1.6 Billion = a 31.25 multiple.

5 to 10 times revenues seems to be a reasonable way to value startups/private companies nowadays (for the most part). But a multiple of 31.25? Wow.

joe-mccann··on War for tech talent in NYC
Austin, SF/SV and NYC are all in the same boat: Tech talent demand is unbelievably high. If you have a LinkedIn profile with reasonable skills (hell, put "HTML5" in your profile and watch what happens) you probably are already aware of this.
joe-mccann··on The Instagram Community - One Million and Counting
Poladroid appears to be the front-running competitor to Instagram as Poladroid is currently Android only as Instagram is iPhone only.

Easter egg on the site.

joe-mccann··on [dead]
Considering the unsustainable run-up recently, 100, 200, or even 300 points in a selloff shouldn't be surprising.

joe-mccann··on Then Welcome To Android
Oh McGruber and you're Apple fanaticism, this is the second thing I've read today by highly regarded devs attempting to defecate on Android's stance on "open-ness" and it is simply pathetic.

The Apple fanboys are clinging to desperate tactics when they x-promote garbage like this.

Of course, take statements out of context from Google I/O and match them up with something to the narrative you are trying to portray: Google as a liar and a cheat.

How about Google having some authority on a marketplace THEY host or services THEY offer? Yeah that is totally unreasonable, right?

And yes, you CAN choose to download and install apps from anywhere and you can build your own services and dump them on your devices. So that is a closed system?

Shameful and pathetic...the desperation is deafening...

joe-mccann··on Ask HN: Heroku or Not?
Heroku is awesome for ruby development. If you're attempting node.js development, they do have a private beta (which I've tested), but is somewhat limited as I believe it uses an NGINX proxy so doing something like websockets with node.js (currently on Heroku) is not possible.

git push master heroku

is reason enough to give it a shot.

Joyent may be another option...

joe-mccann··on How I Made Money Spamming Twitter with Contextual Book Suggestions
I did this a long time ago, almost the exact same thing, but I actually parsed trending topics and searched Amazon for ANY product, not just books, based on the content of the trending topic. I started out with books, but moved on to all products. It was a cool project and netted me some cash but not worth carrying on so I dumped it about a year ago.

Was actually incredibly easy to do. I'm sure there are loads more out there.

joe-mccann··on An iPhone App Market That Doesn't Require Jailbreaking... Which Apple Can't Stop
Apple could "stop" this very easily. Don't allow access to native hardware APIs through the browser via JavaScript; thus, making "webapps" inferior to "native apps" based on capabilities of interacting with the hardware.

Phonegap, FTW.

joe-mccann··on Android 2.2 demolishes iOS4 in JavaScript benchmarks
And what would be examples of benchmarking a subjective experience? I mean, a shitty JavaScript engineer can make any UX shitty regardless of speed of JavaScript tests, whereas a good JavaScript engineer can make a UX good with a crap interpreter.
joe-mccann··on Tesla stock is now back below its IPO price.
Yes. Not enough historical volatility currently to price options contracts accurately.
joe-mccann··on Tesla stock is now back below its IPO price.
Actually, the reason for the insane run-up on it's inital day and second day of trading had very little to do with speculation, but more to do with TSLA being an "extremely hard to borrow" stock on those days. When a stock is hard to borrow, it means it is nearly impossible to short sale the stock. Think AIG when they were melting down. That was a stock that no one wanted loan out for short sales because at the time, their demise was imminent. Not necessarily the same thing with TSLA, but that's what hard to borrow equates to...

So all theories and ideas of why the run up and why the subsequent sell off are essentially wrong. When a stock can only go in one direction, then it can only go in that direction.
