joanfihu··on Ask HN: Would you fund Mozilla to become independent of Google?
Should it need to become independent, OR is it going to be forced to become independent?

It seems Google won’t be able to pay to be the default SE in any browser: Safari, Mozilla, etc.

https://askpandi.com/pandipedia/judgement-against-google-pro...

So I guess Mozilla is scrambling to find new revenue streams since 88% of their revenue comes from it.

I won’t fund Mozilla because it’s been forced to operate fairly.

They should build a product that makes me want to pay for it.

joanfihu··on You need an accelerator to get traction, you need traction for an accelerator
You need a product that people want to get traction…

Then you can accelerate.

There is no way I'll read all that text from the demos...

AskPandi has a similar feature called "Super Search" that essentially checks more sources and self validates it's own answers.

iT's AgEnTic.

The answers are easier to digest, if you search for products, you'll get a list of products with images, prices and retailers.

joanfihu··on The Platform for the Universal Personal Assistant
The quest to build the universal personal assistant (UPA) has been reignited, with both OpenAI and Google going head to head. But what would the ultimate personal assistant look like? Would it be an app, a browser, an OS, or even a physical robot?

joanfihu··on Google Reneged on the Monopolistic Bargain
It’s sad that a product that I used as a North Star has lost so much momentum. Search has only had incremental updates but nothing major. ChatGPT has been the biggest development in search…

It’s one of the reasons why I started AskPandi as a side project. It’s an answer engine that gives answers without fluff. No link sifting, no ads, no popups, no cookie consents.

It’s making browsing the web fun again.

joanfihu··on VQA and Image Chunking for MLLMs (GPT-4V and Gemini)
Handling large images with resolutions higher than 2048x2048 remains a challenge for MLLMs.

Image chunking splits large images into multiple smaller images. Then the model processes each image and uses information from all of them to answer a question.

I managed to get it to work with a 3840px X 20294px web page screenshot. It also works with documents that have figures (tables, charts, illustrations, etc).

joanfihu··on The Generative Internet
Answer engines, content creation and UI navigation are evolving the Internet into a new mutation.

Search returns answers. Web pages are generated on the fly and the browser browses for us.

In this blog post, I write about how the generative Internet is unfolding.

joanfihu··on Google Search Has Gotten Worse, Researchers Find
The main problem researchers found is that the content quality has deteriorated. There is more spam now. However, Google is doing a better job at filtering low quality content than anyone else.

I've been working on a side project to filter spammy content and get straight to the point answers: Https://AskPandi.com

joanfihu··on DDG founder says Google's phone, manufacturing partnerships thwart competition
“In court Thursday, Lehman said his best guess is that search engines will shift largely from relying on user data to relying on machine learning.”

This is a good point. Foundational/Frontier models already pack lots of contextual knowledge that makes user behaviour data collection less relevant.

Whilst building AskPandi, I have only found user’s location to be the only major signal that would greatly improve search results and answers.

joanfihu··on Greg (2017)
It's not about Ilya wanting to slow things down.

Ilya is the technical mastermind behind OAI. The technical breakthroughs needed for AGI are not there yet. Ilya, Yann, Demis and many others are aware of it.

An aggressive push for applied research and commercialisation means less resources for technical breakthroughs.

This is a tricky situation.

joanfihu··on Why it’s impossible to compete with Google Search
Thing with Neeva is that it was marginally better not 2x nor 10x better.

Not enough for people to make the switch.

If I were to take on Google, the approach would be search plus something else.

No one will beat Google just on traditional search.

joanfihu··on We will be shutting down neeva.com
That’s the point of AI in search.

It will help you surface information faster.

joanfihu··on Ask HN: Anyone else regret leaving an old job for a new one?
It's not a bad idea to go back. My gf did it. She left to work at a large corporation. She really hated the politics despite having a 40% higher pay.

Flexibility and job satisfaction at her current job couldn't he matched by the large corpey.

joanfihu··on John Carmack Leaves Meta
This feels particularly relatable as my company has also been acquired. I now know how it feels to work at a large company for the first time.

I've always thought Big Techs where the best to build innovative products because they had resources. It's the opposite due to politics and bureaucracy.

Big Tech gets away because of existing products that were made when the company was nimble. Plus some products are capital intensive like Apple Watch or AI research.

The best organisational setup to make great products are startups. Politics tend to be minimal in early days. If the company is rapidly growing, there is no time for politics.

I think it was Erik Schmidt who said that when a company stops to grow, politics and bureaucracy settles in.

That's probably what's happening at Big Tech.

Ad-powered businesses can project growth by simply adding more ad placements in their products.

joanfihu··on John Carmack Leaves Meta
That's so true.

Carmack is working on AI. He started Keen Technologies.

joanfihu··on Do you ever feel like you've had enough of working in the IT industry?
No, I feel I had enough working with people but not coding.

joanfihu··on Apple’s new App Store tax on ads is a direct shot at Meta
What do you mean by “nerfing WebKit on iOS”?
joanfihu··on Ask HN: Is AI going to replace most programming jobs in the next 10 years?
AI and LLM are a text interface to code.

Someone still needs to write the prompts.

It’s next level of abstraction.

joanfihu··on Ask HN: Has anyone managed to find enjoyment in their work after burnout?
ASD and manager. Congratulations for dealing with neurotypicals. That’s a big achievement by itself. You should be proud.

I’m ASD too. I’m engineering manager and tech lead. Management drains energy, coding refuels energy.

Maybe you should aim to just being an IC? ICs are well paid.

You could try quiet quitting for a bit and see if the sparks comes back.

Hyper-fixate on something else for a bit?

joanfihu··on Now it’s over, let’s come out and say it: The Rings of Power was a stinker
I liked the last few episodes to be honest. The lore is good.

The visuals are the best I’ve seen in a TV show.

I’m happy there is S2 still being produced.

I really wish toxic fans were just quiet so the rest of us can enjoy.

joanfihu··on Ask HN: My employer has about two months of runway left. What shoud I do now?
Don’t rage quit but start looking for your dream job. Take yer time
joanfihu··on Ask HN: What's your strategy to land fully remote jobs?
Yeah try to find someone internally who can give you a referral
