jnsie··on Virginia passes law to enforce maximum vehicle speeds for repeat speeders
> If both Karl Marx and the US founding fathers agreed that a well-armed public is important for a lasting civil peace, it's probably a good idea to listen.

The US founding fathers could not have imagined the weapons systems at the disposal of today's would-be tyrants. Don't bring a gun to an autonomous drone fight...

jnsie··on Deafening Silence from the Cybersecurity Industry
> imagine what it would be like if you would be investigated and jailed on sham charges like in some other countries

Some other countries? The US is renditioning people without due (any!) process ostensibly based on their tattoos. I'm not saying this to be pithy but to sound (or at least amplify) the alarm.

jnsie··on SignalGate Is Driving the Most US Downloads of Signal Ever
End to end encryption. They don't store messages on their servers. There's nothing to retrieve...
jnsie··on Scientists Discover New Heavy-Metal Molecule 'Berkelocene'
Reminds me of a scene from the Royle Family (British show) where Anthony is managing a new band. When asked the name of the band he responds "Exit. That way, wherever we play, the name is always up in lights"
jnsie··on The Ethics of Spreading Life in the Cosmos
> I'm religious, so I'm more in the "seeded" camp than "spontaneous" camp but either way, I strongly believe there is life on other planets in the universe, it's just too bad the universe is so big and light so slow that it's hard to confirm.

Hijacking someone else's comment to ask without judgement or agenda - How, if at all, would it alter your religious beliefs were life/intelligent life to be found on another planet?

jnsie··on Triforce – a beamformer for Apple Silicon laptops
From HN guidelines:

> Be kind. Don't be snarky.

jnsie··on New USPTO Memo Makes Fighting Patent Trolls Even Harder
> Not only am I unintimidated by litigation; I sometimes rather miss it.

Sumptuous!

jnsie··on Two new PebbleOS watches
I'm sure they did. However, intentionality neither makes it consumer friendly nor beneficial from a marketing perspective.
jnsie··on Block YouTube ads on AppleTV by decrypting and stripping ads from Profobuf (2022)
Is this the new artists-doing-free-work-for-exposure?
jnsie··on Block YouTube ads on AppleTV by decrypting and stripping ads from Profobuf (2022)
People all the way down...
jnsie··on Two new PebbleOS watches
Same. It neither describes the product nor makes it easier to search for online. For that matter, it doesn't exactly roll of the tongue either...
jnsie··on Half-Life 2 RTX
By the time I got around to playing Half Life the graphics were so dated that I found it difficult to enjoy (that's obviously a personal preference thing...). I was excited, for a moment, at the possibility of finally enjoying what I'm told is one of the greatest games ever made...until I realized that I do not (and will not any time soon) own a 50xx series graphics card. I suppose a GeForce Now subscription is a possibility.
jnsie··on Block YouTube ads on AppleTV by decrypting and stripping ads from Profobuf (2022)
Recently I've been annoyed with Youtube Premium. I pay for an ad-free experience and do not see ads in the traditional (wait 5 seconds to skip) way, yet more and more content has inline product promotion where time is spent thanking a sponsor and pitching their product. So I'm paying not to avoid ads, but I'm still seeing paid promotion...
jnsie··on Tesla created secret team to suppress driving range complaints (2023)
IANAL but this seems like false advertising at best and fraudulent at worst.
jnsie··on Show HN: I built an app to stop me doomscrolling by touching grass
Brilliant!
jnsie··on How I built an AI company to save my open source project
Very enjoyable read. Hope you do post that follow-up in the future. Congratulations!
jnsie··on Apple Scraps Work on Mac-Connected Augmented Reality Glasses
If the Vision Pro was indistinguishable from a regular pair of glasses and didn't cost over $1000 it would take over the world. I don't think it's a case that people don't want them, it's more that people want what's in sci-fi you spoke of and not this early iteration.
jnsie··on Fixing E.T. The Extra-Terrestrial for the Atari 2600 (2013)
I'm not really into this space but he lists some bin files in the Downloads section. Is this not the compiled ROM you're seeking?
jnsie··on We got hit by an alarmingly well-prepared phish spammer
I'm curious - is there a benefit to doing so versus using Apple's Hide My Email (or a similar service) or appending +service to a gmail email address? Completely ignorant on the topic so apologies if this is a silly question.
jnsie··on "Twelfth Night Till Candlemas" – a 40-year book-quest and its remarkable ending
Lovely and well told story though I'm not sure what the following excerpt has to do with anything:

> The second is that nowadays the real problem perhaps is not with Christmas decorations staying up too late, but with them going up too early, and with shops selling Christmas wares and playing Christmas music well before Advent, let alone Christmas

jnsie··on Germans turn to balcony solar panels to save money
Live in an apartment in NYC and would love some way of turning our windows into solar panels. They only thing I've seen is a ~$100 device from a company called grouphug (no affiliation) whereby a small solar panel is stuck to a window via suction cup and can charge a phone (I believe it has a small in-built battery). Laudable but I wonder if it would return the investment.
jnsie··on The correct amount of ads is zero
> Why would I, as a consumer, compromise on what I want to make some MBA's life easier?

You presumably want access to the Verge's content. This is unsustainable without some revenue. You're compromising to continue to get what you want, not to make some MBA's life easier.

jnsie··on Self-Documenting Code
I lived in the C# world for a while and our style guides mandated that we use those JSDoc style comments for every function definition. I loathed them. They invariable became a more verbose and completely redundant version of the function definition. Developers even used a tool (GhostDoc, IIRC) to generate these comments so that CreateNewUser() became // Create New User. Nobody ever read them, few ever updated them, and they reinforced my hunch that a small percentage of comments are useful (in which case, by all means, use comments!)
jnsie··on Traveling with Apple Vision Pro
I was under the impression that because the components are packed so tight it is difficult to scan anything beneath the laptop. Happy to be corrected.

jnsie··on My daughter (7 years old) used HTML to make a website
Let's agree to disagree. I most certainly didn't take offense. I just disagreed (and continue to disagree) with the (your) comment that I responded to. I'm sure the parent of the 7 year old in question was aware of the shortcomings of the code. The fact that a (presumed) grown-up read the post/thread and their reaction was to provide a code review is odd to me and more than a little hackernews-ish which the poster you responded to poked fun at and which you seemed to take exception to.
jnsie··on My daughter (7 years old) used HTML to make a website
Unsolicited critique is almost always unwelcome critique, in my experience. Especially where someone else's 7 year old is concerned.
jnsie··on Map of Pontypandy in Fireman Sam
I'm gutted that you just gave away the ending. Would have watched the hell out of that!
jnsie··on Map of Pontypandy in Fireman Sam
Imagine paying taxes knowing that it was that one kid (coughnormancough) causing all of the catastrophes
jnsie··on Benjamin Thorpe translated almost all Old English texts (2016)
Live in the US (not a native) and my health insurance is tied to my employment. Coupled with my mortgage, kids' education costs, etc. sustaining what we have is far more pressing than the desire for more money.
