jnevill··on Parents Are Dumb and Kids Don’t Know Anything About Computers Anymore
When I was a kid we would spend days picking out the perfect site for a water mill. We'd toil getting a mill dam set up and some of the finest carpenters in town would build a great water wheel that would supply enough power to run the saws. Kids these days don't even know how to direct the flow of a stream and yet they are off creating a furniture with their table saws and electric compound miters. Their parents are dumb and the kids don't know anything about saws.
jnevill··on ‘I nearly passed out’: A $640 Uber ride for a 30-mile trip to the airport
tl;dr: Bonnie ordered an Uber SUV and is bad at math.
jnevill··on Phishing attack against Lastpass
This is of the devil. It needs to be burned with fire and the ashes should be sunk in the Mariana trench and the trench should be filled with dirt that has been cursed by a witch that was formerly dead but was reanimated by Cthulhu and then rekilled, burned with fire, and buried on the opposite side of the earth.

Everything here is usual phishing stuff, but that Chrome-Extension.pw url is disturbing combined with the lastpass API stuff.

jnevill··on Fitbit Blaze
It's insightful links like this that bring me back to HN everyday.
jnevill··on Can't sign in to Google calendar on my Samsung refrigerator
This is it too. We use Netflix on the SmartTv, but everything else runs through Kodi on a little HTPC I built. It's updated automatically, has plugins to access internet content, and works nicely with my HDHomeRun for Comcrap cable. I want my TV to just be a dumb monitor, I want my car's stereo system to just be an amp with speakers, and I want my fridge to keep food cold. I'll supply the hardware and software for internet/content/whatever so I can update and control it myself.
jnevill··on Exploring Google Fiber for Chicago and Los Angeles
I wish this would make it out to the `burbs, but it's not likely. Just the same, fuck Comcast. I would switch in a heartbeat.
jnevill··on Singular ‘They’ Is Word of the Year
Let's not forget about the folk's from the "Show Me" state's second-person plural: "Ya'llsins"
jnevill··on Singular ‘They’ Is Word of the Year
patrickfl wished to be referred to with the gender-neutral, and more recently invented pronoun "xe", but no one could figure out how to pronounce it so they referred to them as they when they were using the third-person to refer to them.
jnevill··on Singular ‘They’ Is Word of the Year
Is "thou" third-person though? I never use it, so it might be. I dunno.
jnevill··on Singular ‘They’ Is Word of the Year
Perhaps "Newly invented pronouns" would have been more clear. The distinction being Singular "They" has been around for a long time, and "Xe" can't be pronounced by the human mouth and confuses the older folk. Or something...
jnevill··on Lektor – A flat file content management system
I've been really getting into the flat file CMS's recently. I just did a quick project using Grav and its use of twig and yaml made the set up a breeze. With NGINX and not having to muck around with a database I was able to stick the whole thing on a Raspberry Pi and physically handed them their server to plug into the router. I won't dread the next build if these lightwieght CMS's keep popping up.
jnevill··on Beware of ads that use inaudible sound to link your phone, TV, tablet, and PC
This just doesn't seem feasible in the real world. Sending out high frequency sound from a device is one thing, but having the other devices actively listening for the sound, is quite a feat. It's mentioned inside a block of text in a quoteblock in the article: "The inaudible code is recognized and received on the other smart device by the software development kit installed on it.". From where does one get this SDK installed on their device with enough permissions to actively listen for its counterpart ad? There's just too many points of failure for this to be a real threat, or a real marketing tool for that matter.
jnevill··on National Geographic Society sets biggest layoff in its history
NatGeo tried to spin the sale to Murdoch by saying that Murdoch's cash would bring stability to the troubled magazine. It looks like cash is being taken, not given. This is a strange form of stability...
jnevill··on $0.55 per watt from SolarCity’s new solar panel
I wish they sold their panels outright. I could use a few 100 watt panels at 55 bucks a shot. Even double that price, this would be a steal.
jnevill··on Detecting Pulsars (Rotating Neutron Stars) with an RTL-SDR
Before realizing this was on a site for the RTL-SDR software, I found it very odd that the author felt the need to define "Pulsar" but not "RTL-SDR".

For those punching through without investigating, "RTL-SDR is a very cheap software defined radio that uses a DVB-T TV tuner dongle based on the RTL2832U chipset." So yea... this is pretty cool.

jnevill··on Scots 'have 421 words' for snow
In English we probably have 421 words for "Penis"... Tells you where our priorities are.
jnevill··on Google Will Soon Start Punishing Mobile Sites that Use Annoying App Install Ads
Oh man I miss olga. I had completely forgotten about it. These "newer" sites are the pits and every single one of them does this BS app install crap. Thank goodness for the "View as desktop" button in mobile browsers.
jnevill··on SSH Keys on GitHub
You can search out private GPG keys as well, which is crazy-bananas. https://github.com/search?utf8=%E2%9C%93&q=filename%3Aasc+BE...
jnevill··on Guys, “guys” is perfectly fine for addressing diverse groups
It's the author that made the comparison. And NO, I don't think they are comparable. I'm also the one that is not making the comparison. I think if you try to compare them you are an ass. That's my point, that it's stupid to compare them. Bad things are bad. Congrats.
jnevill··on Two self-driving cars involved in 'near miss' in California
Further, form that article:

"Our car did exactly what it was supposed to," she wrote. "Our car saw the Google car move into the same lane as our car was planning to move into, but upon detecting that the lane was no longer open it decided to terminate the move and wait until it was clear again."

jnevill··on Guys, “guys” is perfectly fine for addressing diverse groups
Oh god. So much this. Author is a ding-bat for pulling that terrible argument out. It makes it very hard to take the rest of the argument seriously when poorly thought out garbage like that is introduced. "I don't notice or feel the oppression, therefore it must not exist. Sample size of N=1 is good enough for me". Thick.
jnevill··on Guys, “guys” is perfectly fine for addressing diverse groups
I'm a big fan of "Folks". It's not too informal and not too dressed up. It's 100% inclusive and it doesn't make you sound like a redneck.
jnevill··on Guys, “guys” is perfectly fine for addressing diverse groups
Yep. "Folks". I use it in all of my communications to my group (I am not the manager). I've tried others: "Guys" is clearly gender specific, "Ya'll" is pretty informal (although I use it on occasion), "Team" is barf-o-rama.

"Folks" works well. It's reasonably formal but not gross and, best yet, its inclusive.

jnevill··on Color vision quiz
Nah. I was just being a jerk. My first attempt I got a 31, my second attempt I got 19. My third attempt I was sick of staring at colored blocks and my eyes hurt so I threw the game at 3.
jnevill··on Color vision quiz
3. Beat that.
jnevill··on LastPass Security Notice
I've been using them for over a year. Their UI's are just the worst. They look like they've been designed by someone who has only seen Window's 95 software. Other than that, though, the service and underlying software seems pretty solid.

I have it generate passwords on new sites and any site where I need to change a password due to breaches and whatnot. I haven't known my facebook password for over 12 months. It's some random bunch of characters, and that makes me feel good.

I've enabled 2FA with Google Authenticator and it sounds like, after this breach, any new device that tries to get on my lastpass account has to be authorized over email.

They really appear to take security seriously. I guess they should since that's really their only game.

jnevill··on State seizes 11-year-old, arrests his mother after marijuana school presentation
I've had my kid brought home by the cops twice. Both times he was playing on the sidewalk less than 50 feet from our front door. What do you even say to a cop that thinks allowing your child to play in their own front yard unsupervised is dangerous? It's insane. You risk getting a visit from CPS if your child goes unsupervised at any point in time. In practice, it's rare, but not so rare that parent's like me and my wife don't worry about every time our kids run outside to play.
jnevill··on Microsoft's new foldable keyboard
I would think that not owning a smartphone or a tablet would be a really great reason for not owning one. Is there more... like were you already dead set against this keyboard, but then you were like "Shit.. I don't even own a smartphone, or a tablet..." Anyway... your point's are moot. The only reason someone would want to own one of these is specifically for social media... nevermind. You did cover that one. My mistake.
jnevill··on How Etsy Alienated Its Crafters and Lost Its Soul
I agree completely. I helped a store migrate from Etsy to a custom CMS because they had outgrown Etsy, and they did so in about a year. Etsy would do well to pivot their marketing from Handmade/Craft to Small Business Incubator. Or maybe they have and that's what all the butt hurt is about.
jnevill··on A female computer science major at Stanford: “Floored” by the sexism
Yes... the rest of her argument is moot because of the use of one word. That's really all it takes to ruin her credibility and ignore what she says. Either you are incredibly stupid or incredibly sexist... my guess is both.
