jneal··on U.S. charges Edward Snowden with espionage
Snowden is, and will forever be, a patriot in my eyes. Our government (in the US) takes away more and more of our civil liberties and constitutional rights with each passing day and I'm personally tired of it.
jneal··on NeoCities
Decided to create something from scratch in the text editor. I must say I like the editor. Had to include a slight ode to the fallen geo(.*)

jneal··on Confirmed: The NSA is Spying on Millions of Americans
Vote Republican: Patriot act created Vote Democratic: Patriot act abused

I'm not sure where this leaves us, which is worse?

jneal··on The theory of relativity in words of four letters or less
This is cool. I felt I had to keep my note the same. A very neat idea I'd say. Wish it was more easy to read. Very cool!
jneal··on Ask HN: I'm lost. Please help
I've actually been in a very similar situation. I asked for the salary knowing they couldn't pay it and figuring it was my easiest way out without feeling like the bad guy. Hey, I just needed money and they couldn't pay it...Low and behold they unexpectedly accepted my offer. Good news, right? Not really...I wasn't happy, and after getting the salary I felt even more stuck than I was before. Get out while you still can.
jneal··on Why do users click randomly and rapidly when an application hangs?
Same for me. In terms of real life, something upsets you, you go punch a punching bag or beat up a pillow. In the computer world, I simply click as fast as possible until my frustration level lowers.
jneal··on How I Made Porn Video Streaming More Efficient with Python and C
I know others already said this, but I clicked on this link from work and immediately became appalled when realizing it was about porn and quickly backed out. I'd gladly read this from the comfort of my own home and I'm sure the content itself is SFW but still the point is I was mislead. Can we please [mods] not change titles in cases like this?
jneal··on Poll: At what price would you buy Google Glass?
I voted 250 because I feel I would pay at least 250 for it, but 500 seemed too high, so I fall in the middle.
jneal··on The Well Deserved Fortune of Satoshi Nakamoto, Bitcoin creator
Keep in mind that the coins can be distributed in very minute amounts. So with 100k coins remaining in circulation, that could be billions of people that all hold .00005 of a bitcoin.
jneal··on [dead]
If you are wondering if this is real news or not, just look at previous posts:

jneal··on Bitcoin exchange rate reached $100 USD per BTC
That pizza laszlo bought [1] nearly 3 years ago would now be worth over a million dollars.

jneal··on What Major World Cities Look Like at Night, Minus the Light Pollution
These are beautiful. I would love to have one of these framed in my house.
jneal··on Official comment from HN on dead threads
I don't believe this is fake, as much as I wish it was. They are still updating their Twitter and status blogs and I'd assume if it was fake, they'd see it and at least delete it. I've attempted calling and speaking with them directly through various direct extensions but no one answers.
jneal··on How did my Google Reader logo become the "default"?
The official logo came first and is the more "blocky" or "3D" of the two. The author created his version later, which somehow got picked up as the "official" logo according to Wikipedia. Thus news sites started using this "official" logo believing Wikipedia albeit incorrect.

I'm not a lawyer, but the author's image is in fact a derivative work of the original, and as such I'm not sure there's much he can do in this case. If it were an entirely unique creation that was being used without permission you'd have more options.

jneal··on Sendgrid is down
I'll just start following them on Twitter then. I've recently started working somewhere new where we use SendGrid, and this is the first outage I've been aware of.
jneal··on Sendgrid is down
As a SendGrid customer, I'm certainly glad I visit HN frequently and was able to find out about this. I'm surprised we weren't notified by them directly, though.
jneal··on Chrome World Wide Maze
Same issue here, using chrome too....
jneal··on Official Hacker News T-Shirt
Having same issue. My bank says they are not declining but the website keeps saying declined...
jneal··on Official Hacker News T-Shirt
Anyone else having issues paying? I use my CC online all the time to pay bills and buy off Amazon, and never have any issues, but I receiving an error first that my card was declined, and then after retyping everything "There is a problem with the card you entered." - Contacting my bank now to see if they can give any insight.
jneal··on No, Diatoms Have Not Been Found in a Meteorite
That's true, makes sense. At first, I just felt like this guy was rebutting based on the common belief that life evolved on its own on earth. In the past I've seen evidence discounted and honest theories rejected simply because they contradict the norm, and what everyone is taught. I don't believe this is one of those situations now, but that's just how it felt to me at first.
jneal··on No, Diatoms Have Not Been Found in a Meteorite
Okay, I'm no scientist but one part of the argument just kind of irks me:

In other words, all the diatoms shown in the paper are from known species on Earth. That makes it somewhat less likely they are native to space. And by somewhat, I mean completely. Like, zero chance they are from space.

UNLESS, Panspermia is correct and all life on earth came from space, in which case it would be completely in the realm of possibility that life from space that landed on earth had already landed here before, in the distance past.

jneal··on Establishing secure connection
Very true, but for those that don't know in this case CEO is "Commercial Electronic Office"
jneal··on The True Cost of Healthcare in the US
These costs are roughly what I'm faced with as well. I have insurance on myself but my kid is uninsured because I can't bring myself to pay so much per month when my child is only at the doctor 2-3 times a year and the cost is probably around $180 for a whole year, or less than the cost of a single month of insurance which I'd still be paying a copay on.
jneal··on The True Cost of Healthcare in the US
I suppose you are prepared to starting paying the tax penalty for not having insurance under the PPACA?
jneal··on So you think you can tell Arial from Helvetica?
I used the same rational. Whichever font looked bolder, I choose and got it correct. Also, the Staples Arial version didn't have the "registered" mark so I got that one easily.
jneal··on JQuery 1.9 has been released
I'm happy for the addition of the :target selector. I tried using this on a recent project before realizing it wasn't available.
jneal··on JQuery 1.9 has been released
They are continuing support for both 1.9 (supporting IE6+) and 2.0
jneal··on Show HN: my useless weekend project, add speech bubbles to images
Very cool, I like it and definitely don't find it useless because it's a nice product. I made one: http://phrase.it/show/wMQYy
jneal··on Two-for-one: Amazon.com’s Socially Engineered Replacement Order Scam
I accidentally did something similar. I ordered an item, and paid for overnight shipping on a Thursday morning. The item didn't arrive as promised on Friday, in fact it didn't arrive until Wednesday the next week. That weekend, I called in complaining that I hadn't received my item. The label was printed Thursday, but UPS never picked up the package. They assumed it was lost and re-shipped my package. Low and behold, I received both packages and ended up with a 2 for 1. I kept the extra still in the box for a month, figuring I'd get a call from Amazon eventually asking for it back - when I never heard from them I decided to sell it.
jneal··on Corruption Or Carelessness? GOP Deletes Its Own Copyright Reform Report
I'm going to sound like a conspiracy theorist, but I honestly believe my opinion is the truth. The corporations truly run America by financing the politicians and if they say pull this paper or lose funding, you are going to pull the paper.

The big corporations (that run America) don't want patent reform. They buy up all the patents and force the little guys either out of business or to pay them large sums of money that shouldn't have to be paid. The patent system allows big corporations to keep a monopoly.

When I see a company get a patent for page turns, I can't help but put my hand to my face and just worry about the future of innovation.
