jmvoodoo··on Workers who cut countertops are dying of silicosis
We aren't talking about cake though. We are talking about inexpensive highly processed foods made predominantly from ingredients that are subsidized specifically because of their caloric density. I.e. corn.

High caloric density is what you want if you need to be able to feed your country in war, so we subsidize these foods.

No one wants to eat just plain corn though, so companies process it into other foods that are then sold cheaply because they are receiving these large subsidies.

People end up consuming large quantities of these foods because they are cheap, and our brain reward centers a pre-wired to love lots of cheap easy calories.

Knowing all of this, it makes perfect sense to tax the living crap out of highly processed foods that are made from subsidized ingredients. You're just taking back the subsidy you put there in the first place, and shaping consumer behavior for the greater good (which is a common use case for taxation).

Probably not the murderer? FBI, local jurisdiction, literally anyone would be a better choice than the institution accused of committing the crime.
jmvoodoo··on Rule for Beneficial Ownership Reporting (2022)
There are very valid reasons to use an LLC to keep your identity private. Many business owners use anonymous LLCs to avoid harassment, or from members of their community learning what they do, or how well off they might be. There's nothing wrong with that, and doing away with it would harm a lot of innocent people.

jmvoodoo··on “Our paying customers need X, when will you fix it?”
I think it's simply a cultural difference, and the message was interpreted by the developer as "give me a date that is close to now to satisfy me" which may or may not be accurate depending on FrugalGuy's intent. But also, the idea that the devs might not care to set and be held to a date seems to be lost on the asker. They probably have not considered that this relationship is not a vendor relationship and asking for something like a date commitment is "out of bounds" for the relationship between them and the OS developers.

Lack of understanding and empathy on both sides for something that probably could have been turned into a fruitful relationship if it had been handled differently (not that it couldn't still, but that certainly doesn't seem like the direction things are going).

jmvoodoo··on The F-15 Eagle: Origins and Development, 1964-1972 [pdf]
This is why both platforms were designed to be used together as a team. F-35 provides sensor fusion and the F-15 is the missile truck. That also allows the F-35 to continue to evade detection, since launching attacks tends to get you noticed by the enemy.

Modern air combat can't be measured in direct comparison like this, or even thought of in terms of "we should be using X instead of Y"

The F-35 costs are also going down relative to it's peer group as the export market has grown significantly. The F-35s issue is that it's misunderstood, not that it doesn't meet expectations.

jmvoodoo··on The F-15 Eagle: Origins and Development, 1964-1972 [pdf]
F-35s have flown over 1,000 combat sorties. When would you consider it "proven"?
jmvoodoo··on Unpredictable abilities emerging from large AI models
I think its knowledge of python can only come from comments about code, since it can't execute the python or learn from trying code like a human would.

That doesn't change the fact that its predicting the output based on its knowledge of python though.

So, yes you're right, but at the same time it doesn't change anything IMO.

jmvoodoo··on Unpredictable abilities emerging from large AI models
What's most interesting to me, is that this is how I would expect a human to approach the problem if presented with the code and asked for the output.

The LLM didn't run the code, it tried to predict the output based on its knowledge of python and primes.

jmvoodoo··on SF payroll firm Rippling has to delay payouts after Silicon Valley Bank collapse
Right now, the funds are still showing at least in our online portal. I will be visiting the branch tomorrow and hopefully can prevent the transfer from completing.

Not a fun email to receive either way.

jmvoodoo··on SF payroll firm Rippling has to delay payouts after Silicon Valley Bank collapse
We just received this from Rippling:

Hi Rippling Customer,

Yesterday afternoon, Rippling learned that Silicon Valley Bank (SVB) had solvency challenges. We have been working with SVB to ensure timely payments to our customers’ employees. However, this morning we learned that the FDIC had stepped in and taken control of SVB.

We are reaching out to you because you have a payroll that has already been processed for 3/15/2023. Currently, these funds may be sitting with SVB. We are closely monitoring the FDIC takeover and what it means for this pay run. We ask that you please reach out to your bank and request that your bank return any ACH transactions debited from your account by Rippling into SVB under the premise that the transaction(s) are unauthorized, since the bank has ceased operations and is unable to honor the payments.

If the bank agrees to issue a return, you will then need to send a wire to Rippling for the full amount of the 3/15/2023 payroll run by Tuesday 3/14/2023 at 12 PM PST. This help center article has updated wire instructions. Your 3/15/2023 payroll will be marked as Non-sufficient Funds (NSF) on Rippling’s end, but as long as we have received the wire, Rippling will issue employee payments for 3/15/2023 via our new banking partner, JP Morgan Chase & Co.

If the bank does not agree to issue a return, we will follow up with additional instructions. If you have questions, please reach out to our support team.

Thanks, The Rippling Team

The place to hit them would be azure. Target each azure service url with an ad for the same service in GCP and the savings they would realize if they switched.

Double down on diagnostics and error pages, and adjust the messaging during outages to highlight GCP uptimes.

Lenders in the US offer loans for investors that are still not commercial loans. They have a higher interest rate than a loan against your primary residence. There is regulation preventing you from using a primary residence loan for an investment property, and lenders will enforce it.

Commercial loans are not typically used for things with 4 units or less, however they are required for non-residential builds and for multifamily >4 units.

jmvoodoo··on The U.S. military is growing concerned about UFOs. Should we worry?
That sounds like two victories for the black project. 1) our last project was successful in evading existing sensor technologies, 2) our next project will address the gaps in our sensor capabilities.

Funding secured.

jmvoodoo··on Crypto.com accidentally transfers $10.5m to woman instead of $100
I definitely don't know what I'm doing and don't claim to. Wasn't a serious recommendation and hopefully not a serious question either.

I don't think you'd need to defend yourself against a state level actor here. 10M gone missing from a crypto exchange isn't exactly a national security event. In the crypto world I think that's just called Tuesday.

jmvoodoo··on Crypto.com accidentally transfers $10.5m to woman instead of $100
I didn't mean it as a serious response, but I'm not sure there's any scheme that doesn't also involve laundering the money somehow if you keep it.
jmvoodoo··on Crypto.com accidentally transfers $10.5m to woman instead of $100
Place the funds back into a crypto.com account, transfer the funds through a tumbler into a wallet you control.

Open support ticket with crypto.com saying you've been phished and that the funds are gone. Make sure to capture in writing their response that funds cannot be recovered.

Wait for them to try to recover funds. Forward them their own email and explain that you did return the funds but then they were lost and can't be recovered.

jmvoodoo··on Better.com CEO Vishal Garg says he is personally liable for $750M SoftBank loan
