jmilkbal··on Vimdb - a new way to search vim's keys, options and commands
Good work, but I feel obligated to mention that, of course, this is all already built in to emacs.
jmilkbal··on Mothership Down: Apple bug halts the production of development certificates.
Aye. What mothership? I'm not a fucking slave to the retardation that is this entire company. They regularly show they can't manage anything properly.
jmilkbal··on US Government: You're Scaring Web Businesses Into Moving Out Of The US
Most countries IP laws are not as obnoxious as ours so they don't have to give minor concessions to pretend to care.
jmilkbal··on How Far Can You Get From McDonald's?
Subway became the largest restaurant chain in the world recently. Is it, perhaps, more apt to ask how far one can get from one of them?
jmilkbal··on Ask HN: How to report hours as a contractor?
If you use emacs, it has org-mode which is very capable. It'll handle task organization, prioritizing, time clock, scheduling, invoicing and more.

Look here at http://orgmode.org/ and http://doc.norang.ca/org-mode.html for brief and in-depth use information.

Good luck.

jmilkbal··on [dead]
I was listening until he started condescending Obama about socialist "spreading the wealth around" policies like the British government of the 1970's. It's totally out of place; he mentions the Labour party so might as well take a crack at Obama.
jmilkbal··on Abolish the Food Industry
I agree with the article, but I can't decide if sugar is should be the catalyzing factor or the plethora of other toxic chemicals they put in food.
jmilkbal··on Ask HN: Which is better, Avast or McAfee?
I find the use of FOSS operating systems to be the best form of antivirus, but if you must use MS Windows, I've heard that AVG Free (as in beer) is top notch.
jmilkbal··on Ask HN: What is the most secure public email service
It's been said many times over: email is inherently not secure. You can secure access to it as much as you like, but it's still going over the wire in plain text unless you are encrypting all of your messages.
jmilkbal··on Ask HN: Is Copying HTML Bad and Unethical?
Sounds like you've been reeducated by the RIAA.
jmilkbal··on UK Guardian thinks consumers will boycott Apple over labour issues
That's rich.
jmilkbal··on Duck.com (not the search engine you might expect)
I'd like to think that the evil chocolate factory is so scared of DDG such that they would buy up a related domain name, but the domain was owned by On2 technologies which, as you may recall, was bought by Google for their video codec. Of course, Google may be undermining competition in other ways. I'm sure they are.

They should just donate the domain to DuckDuckGo if only to squash conspiracy theorists.

jmilkbal··on Alternatives to Google mail?
The key is to recognize that when you're getting something for free that you are not the customer. Fastmail provides a great product at a reasonable price. Spam protection and support are both top notch.
jmilkbal··on Official PHP site will have a new design
The Wayback machine shows me that the current design is nearly 11 years old.

jmilkbal··on Apple Becomes World's First Fair Trade Tech Company
If you actually look at what we'll know it's virtually nothing. All the info anyone will see are some vague statistics that help no one. FLO would be very unhappy to see their certification dragged around like this. While this certainly will make fanbois feel good about themselves, the people paying attention see that nothing is really changing.

jmilkbal··on Life-changing Browser Feature (Chrome)
Hardly a new idea. Firefox has been doing this for a long time. This is what the keyword field is for in the bookmarks dialog.
jmilkbal··on while (1); or for (;;);? (tldr; one results in less compiler warnings)
I think it's time to choose a more modern language. Having to hack this is such a prehistoric notion.
jmilkbal··on Ada Programming on Slackware Linux
Developing in Ada is one of the best ways to go. For being proven for 30 years, more projects should launch new Projects in Ada catching bugs as early in development as possible. For many of my projects, I find that if the code compiles 9 times out of 10 it works as intended (barring stupid logic errors by humans).
