Co-founding Moo.do while traveling around the world

jmeistrich··on Show HN: Legend-State 1.0 – The fastest React state library
A few examples I can think of:

- I've seen huge React components with tons of useState, so every little state change re-renders a massive component with lots of complex logic. It can be better to split that into subcomponents so it renders less, less often. - In React, it's usually good to wrap components in memo. Without memo, any state change passes down the entire component tree, and then the virtual dom has to diff a massive tree of nodes, which is slow. - Chaining array functions like map and filter can be slow because it loops the full array and also allocates a new array for each one. If you're doing multiple operations on an array it's probably better to use a simple for loop with your complex logic, and push to an "out" array.

If you want to go deep on micro-optimizing, these are some of the little differences we've found. I think we will expand on this with some benchmarks. https://legendapp.com/open-source/state/fast/#micro-optimiza...

And if you want to go deep on React performance and what Legend-State does to make it faster, I went into a lot of detail here: https://legendapp.com/open-source/legend-state/

jmeistrich··on Legend
Legend developer here. We actually weren't quite ready to do a public launch yet because we're planning to make some videos and overall improve the intro experience. If you're interested, check back in a few weeks. Or the Help page at https://legendapp.com/help/ could help for now.
jmeistrich··on Ask HN: Is there a powerful open-source Google Calendar replacement?
Check out https://moo.do. It's a to-do list, outliner, calendar, and email all in one. It sounds like it would work well for what you're looking for. If not, let me know and I'll try to make it better for your use case.
jmeistrich··on Ask HN: Is there a powerful open-source Google Calendar replacement?
I'm actually making exactly what you're looking for: https://moo.do

It does to-do lists, calendar, and email all in one. The only caveat is it only supports Google Calendar and Gmail so far.

Let me know if this solves your problem or if there's anything I can do to make it better for you.

jmeistrich··on Moo.do turns Gmail into a task management system
That's a great point. We'll look into changing it to 30 days. Also, if you email us when your trial is running out we'll be happy to extend it for you.
jmeistrich··on Moo.do turns Gmail into a task management system
It's client-side access to Gmail through the Gmail API. The only thing that uses our server is the Snooze feature, which only stores the thread ID and the date. And all the other data is stored in your Google Drive account which is only accessible client-side. We don't want to read your data.

We don't have an ETA for Office 365 support yet because we're focusing on getting the experience right first. But we get a lot of requests for that so it's definitely a high priority.
jmeistrich··on Show HN: Moo.do – Simple, Powerful Organizational Tool
We’re planning to integrate many more services into Moo.do. Having first and third party plugins for adding content and viewing data in different ways is a big part of our goal. We’re looking into the best way to achieve that and what a full API would look like.
jmeistrich··on Show HN: Moo.do – Simple, Powerful Organizational Tool
Yeah, we were inspired by text-based solutions because they're so much easier to work with than a big complicated UI. But they generally don't scale very well. So we're trying to make something that's as easy as text but also super powerful.
jmeistrich··on Moo.do – Ridiculously simple, incredibly powerful organization
Hey, one of the founders here.

We feel very strongly about keeping control of your data too. We have an exporter in the sidebar (click the M icon at the top left) that lets you export to HTML, plain text, or JSON. We’re going to add an OPML exporter as well, and if there’s other formats that you would find useful please let us know. It’s your data - we’re not going to hold it hostage.

The business model is going to be freemium, but everything that is in there now will always be free.

We are working on undo in the preview and just fixed opening the file from Drive.

We want interacting with Moo.do feels as natural as a text editor or writing on paper. Everything is just text. You can treat each line like an entry on a to-do list, or a note, or a comment - however you want.

jmeistrich··on Show HN: WhereTheyAt – Map of your friends based on shared Facebook data
Whoa, I have a lot of friends traveling in Europe right now.
jmeistrich··on Show HN: A virtual whiteboard for working or teaching remotely
Cool, feels as fast as a native app on my iPad. I like the infinite zooming and panning.
