jlpom··on Ukraine calls on hacker underground to defend against Russia
I remeber a video from the grugq where he said he has a "friend" who pirated Iran targets directly from US IPs because he knew he had no chance of being extraded.

You really wouldn't says that if you've been locked, it's one of the worst thing in the world, even more so when it's unfair -- this is a progress.

> one derives from first principles every opinion they hold

But it's the only correct way, if credible studies contradict an official agency (more often it's the degree of the opinion where there is disagreement, not the opinion itself), my advice would be to trust the studies. For instance MRI contrast agents: the EMA banned most of them while the FDA did not, which is not the advice one would form by reading studies on the matter.

Me too. If the content overspills you can't shut off the plaque because the control become unusable ('hot' or liquid on the surface displayed), which often leads to more overspills /autocatalyse.

jlpom··on Understanding Shannon's Entropy metric for Information [pdf]
In 1939, when Shannon had been working on his equations for some time, he happened to visit the mathematician John von Neumann. During their discussions, regarding what Shannon should call the "measure of uncertainty" or attenuation in phone-line signals with reference to his new information theory, according to one source:[10]

> My greatest concern was what to call it. I thought of calling it ‘information’, but the word was overly used, so I decided to call it ‘uncertainty’. When I discussed it with John von Neumann, he had a better idea: ‘You should call it entropy, for two reasons: In the first place your uncertainty function has been used in statistical mechanics under that name, so it already has a name. In the second place, and more important, nobody knows what entropy really is, so in a debate you will always have the advantage.

I don't find gitlab/hub are user-hostile (the author runs a competing service). For other service, the answer is the fediverse, but author stopped publishing on mastodont (please continue).
jlpom··on The Science of the Benefits of Religion
Basing anything on false or inexact beliefs won't leads to lasting desirable outcomes IMO*. Some argues to read religious texts as metaphors but I think it's just a way to circumvent the reality. *except for charities but benevolence is obviously not (only) tied to religions
jlpom··on My life after quitting social media
I also does this. The main problem IMO is info duplication: sames infos are duplicated on different websites/sources & sometimes inside sources (eg Twitter) and some is missing on individual one. I’m thinking of an aggregator that would group info (preferably free of rights) per individual news and summarise it.

jlpom··on Beyond “Fermi’s Paradox” XVI: What Is the “Dark Forest” Hypothesis?
Maybe I lack imagination, but I can only see as a constant selective pressure leading to a specie with interstellar space plans (we still haven't) the biped-on land evolution that took place on earth, and I can only see earth-like planet hosting avanced life.
jlpom··on Havana syndrome: Exposure to neurotoxin may have been cause, study suggests
I find this hypothesis slithly more plausible than a pulsed radiofrequency/microwaves attack where the way this could alter white matter seems unclear, but especially given a precedent [0] both are good candidates.

This is compatible in my view to a russian interference in the midst of warming relations between Cuba and the US/Canada. The diplomats seems ro be the only members of the embassy to be affected and the russians know how to not leave their footprint when they don't want to (e.g. not Novitchok or Polonium).

jlpom··on Havana syndrome: Exposure to neurotoxin may have been cause, study suggests
If you have ways to eliminate it with time, the DEET is probably long gone from you're organism and that's what matter if you're fine.

On sligthly unrelated and personal note, I made the mistake to pass an MRI with gadolinium based contrast (refuse it if you have choice!) months ago and the lasting effects are still a huge toll on my health (difficulties to think, talk and sleep, skin and paint raidiness, cardiac and sexual (erectile and nearly no spermatogenese, maybe linked to thyroïd?) issues. I hope this isn't permanent but there is no improvement in sigth, and no explaination for why it wasn't filtered (creatinine level from a blood test months after the incident was on the lower end but still in the normals brackets) that could accord me support from a nephrologist or other specialist to get rid of the deposits.

jlpom··on One whole-body MRI could replace multiple cancer scans

jlpom··on One whole-body MRI could replace multiple cancer scans
A general practitioner redirected me to a neurologist, hopefully he will find out.
jlpom··on One whole-body MRI could replace multiple cancer scans
MRI are generaly considered safe but my personnal experience contradict this. I passed a 3T brain MRI (with gadolinium injection for angiography) ~80 days ago and my life has been seriously painful since then. I have experienced hypertension (often >170 of systole, seem unrelated but never had high tension of my life and like the rest of theses issues it appeared exactly after the MRI), sleep issues, head difficulties to think and head "rigidity", sexual/erectile disfunction (other side-effets started to dim a bit since then, but not this one), continuous heat on of my face up to 3 weeks after the exam. I am not trying to spread FUD but this has unfortunately been my experience. I'm a fragile kind of person, though I didn't expected it would be (so) unsettling. YMMV but you may reconsider passing one if you don't have confidence it would help you diagnosis or find issues (stenosis, neoplasm...).
jlpom··on The Cult of Reason
From the article:

> It's a nice excuse to get together and have a bit of a community spirit but without the religion aspect

> It's not a church, it's a congregation of unreligious people.

Seems more a gathering of same-minded persons than a real cult.

jlpom··on The Cult of Reason
I studied the Revolution as part of the national curriculum of 1st year of HS, and this "religion" was as crazy as the description of it sounds, and part of the ambient madness of the following years. It seems to me to be more the expression of collective madness than Lumières's ideals.
jlpom··on Top Open-Source Static Site Generators
What prevent Hugo from being supported by GitHub pages? I have never understood the "Jekyll integration" thing, you're just pushing static assets created by your static site generator to GitHub, so why would it be different from a generator to an other?
