jleyank··on Canada will match US tariffs 'dollar for dollar' as trade talks break down
Harsh, but same for oil and potash. Other minerals too.
jleyank··on Canada will match US tariffs 'dollar for dollar' as trade talks break down
Sweden? Germany? Last two defense contracts negotiations…
jleyank··on Ask HN: Why does the US government search through people's phones at the border?
Because it can…
jleyank··on Canada will match US tariffs 'dollar for dollar' as trade talks break down
Note that these new tariffs are on goods covered by CUSMA, making that treaty inoperative. Pity it’s one Trump signed…

One must stand up to bullies otherwise they’ll keep at it. Until the US population feels the pain the rest of the world has been dealing with, nothing will change.

jleyank··on Trump Threatens 'Tremendous Consequences' for Countries Doing Business with Iran
Last time I checked, Russia, China and North Korea are doing business with Iran. Come on big guy, take these folks on. But then, this would probably cost Trump money and increase his personal risk. But the US lived there for decades.
jleyank··on White House Says Slavery Is Being Taught Wrong, Should Not Be So Negative
Lookup gerrymander. Quality of living, education, etc.
jleyank··on AI was supposed to win people over by now – it hasn't
You forgot - it also aims to consume lots of power and water and hardware to keep it from others. Privatize the profits, socialize the costs.
jleyank··on EA staff fear new Saudi Arabia owners will police their games
People should always vote with their money. Give it to companies in sync with their views and withhold it from those out of sync. There is a grey middle ground where the decision is harder.
jleyank··on U.S. Debt Hits $40T as America's Borrowing Binge Continues
"Talk" and "Walk" aren't the same word although they rhyme. And they only refer to Democrats, who are the only ones with agency in government (Murc's Law).
jleyank··on White House Says Slavery Is Being Taught Wrong, Should Not Be So Negative
There's been a lot of "progress". They used to be chattel property. Then they were merely abused. Then, post-WW II, they were lynched from time to time. Now, they're only denied the right to vote and to participate fully in political and economic society.

I guess having to share one's benefits seems like oppression?

jleyank··on Traditional CVs Are Dead
In the Science field: degrees, publications, projects, patents

In the Tech field: projects

Basically, it's "who are you?" combined with "what have you done?". You can format it however you'd like, but these are what you must answer. Remember, winning in the Tech field is getting hired w/o a CV... "Fred, yeah, he's good, you should hire him."

jleyank··on Demand for Canadian citizenship certificates soaring, fuelled by Americans
Which one? The one they’re in or the one they’re viewing as a possible alternative?
jleyank··on Trump Will Make South Korea Pay for His Iran Humiliation
I’m sure Oman is a little pissed off right now, too. Burn all those bridges and it’s going to get lonely.
jleyank··on Why does everyone hate data centers?
They also impact local utilities with little return contribution. Few jobs after construction, and no guarantee they’re even being used to support those paying the taxes for them.

Being big brother of sorts doesn’t help. Particularly as they’re not quite right all the time. But they are quite confident.

jleyank··on Anthropic's 'watermark' text adulteration in Claude is a perversion of writing
Rands made this point a few days ago as I recall. Worries about having his tool corrupt his writing during editing, etc.
jleyank··on USS Abraham Lincoln sailors tried to jump overboard amid extended deployment
The military better pay attention to this kind of thing. Enlisted recruiting relies on the promise of medium-term gains (schooling, training) but relies on the first few years being better than the alternatives facing the 18-21's. Take that away, throwing in the chance of actually dying will make taking the King's Shilling distasteful. No enlisted, no grunts, nobody to do the scut work.

They're already trying to reduce reliance on various social groups. Losing the remainder will mean those pretty boats and birds will just sit there broken.

jleyank··on The Alpha 21264 CPU: NT's Greatest RISC (1998)
I seem to remember that Alpha’s were very fast for the time but their maximum optimization level waived IEEE floating point conformance. This, of course, drove us nuts trying to validate ports of numerically intensive code. Less interesting chips with lower optimization and limited market penetration.

Now, HP’s PA-RISC chips…. Those things were fast and easier to work with. Curiously, with SoftPC they could do windows faster than a 486 could. Slaughtered all sorts of mini-supers they did.

Would have been interesting if alpha survived to compete with SGI’s MIPS.

jleyank··on What counts as cooking? In defense of the store-bought sauce
Cooking: everything made from scratch. Dirty every pot you own.

cooking: made from components, but boiling pasta, cooking meat, seasoning premade side, etc.

heating: bag or can into pot, simmered.

in a rush: can with spoon, ramen is crunchy, …

Note to reader: cold pizza is why dorm rooms need toaster ovens, not toasters.

jleyank··on What happens if an entire class of workers loses faith in their careers
Look at the disappearance of pink-collar jobs due to computerization and "do it yourself" that it enabled. There's lots of examples of whole career fields disappearing. The trick has always been to see whether and how things reappear.
jleyank··on Polling shows a growing political reckoning is coming for data centers
Not surprising at all. There is paid for the locals when these things appear, but they don’t get anything back for that paid. Even if they’re computer literate and using ai, there’s no notice that this came from their local centre. Nor is there anything that’s unique to a particular location.

People get annoyed at being inconvenienced so that others, elsewhere can make money.

jleyank··on Trump's Push for More A.I. Data Centers Will Mean Major Air Pollution
Don't forget power and water shortages and probably pissed off neighbours. Aside from building the facility, they won't make jobs and they probably won't pay taxes - which will result in neighbours more pissed off...

There's places on Earth that have power resources that could be used. Not sure there's enough water, unless non-drinkable water can be used without fear of particulates. Unfortunately, they're not often in the tax regimes people want to build them in.

jleyank··on Ask HN: Any tips for a college freshman enrolled in computer science?
If you want a developer's career, make sure you study something other than CS in uni. If you have some basis in an engineering or scientific field, speciality fields can open that can't be easily filled. It also helps to actually learn how to create something from blank paper: come up with an idea, spec it, make a prototype, cycle through revisions. This "muscle memory" is the basis of the software development. And it provides an opportunity to learn debugging - perhaps the single skill that will carry over into the AI sunny uplands.

And as others have said - do it yourself, put off using crutches such as AI until you understand the process.

jleyank··on What's Wrong with American Studies?
Can they point to articles that are unjustly critical of America? How about those they think appropriate? For example, is a historical article summarizing the errors and omissions that let to Pearl Harbor “critical of America” or “history”?
jleyank··on If AI Writes All the Code, What Do the Programmers Do?
Debugging. Lots of debugging. It will be interesting when the researchers look back in 5-10 years to determine which was easier/better - trying to understand generated code vs generating code one understands.

If a functional reasoning layer is added to the current lookup level, “do you want fries with that?” might be in their “doing”. If this doesn’t appear in a timely fashion, de-slopping code will be their lot.

jleyank··on Can Gender Equality and Religious Liberty Coexist?
This can be phrased w/o gender - can equality exist with religious liberty? Some social groupings are inclusive, some are exclusive and the latter runs the risk of colliding with equality/liberty arguments. They could be religious, political, economic, whatever.

Just a veneer on the us vs them argument of primates that predate humans.

jleyank··on Clinical failure rates over the decades: yikes
Novo Nordisk was first to market with a pill-form for GLP-1 as I recall.
jleyank··on Clinical failure rates over the decades: yikes
You could compare ibuprofen and naproxen. One lasts 4-ish hours while the other, having different functionality, lasts 12-ish hours.
jleyank··on The computer that helped win World War II
How about this one, although it covers the context of the times…. https://www.amazon.ca/Colossus-Bletchley-Parks-Greatest-Secr...
jleyank··on Does a PhD Pay Off?
I assume this is a PhD in CS or some computer related field. In the case of Chemistry, the PhD is the required degree to get above the technician grades (BS, MS). People with a BS and a good pair of hands in the lab can eventually reach the levels that a PhD walks into from university. Project leaders are drawn from PhD's with 5+ years of experience, as they have to learn medicinal chemistry in pharma. They learn synthetic or natural product (or computational) chemistry in uni and p-doc (cross training).

This has to be kept in mind when discussing STEM vs CS fields. The latter is placed in the former, but the training requirements can be rather different.

jleyank··on Canada is taking an outsized role in the construction of the post-American world
Puerto Rico makes pharmaceuticals, so if it can be built there it can be built in Canada or wherever. No high-tech workforce in PR, and tax games can be played anywhere. And Trudeau, to many people's annoyance, bought Alberta a pipeline. More can be built. This sh*t isn't going to change in a year and the problem(s) aren't going away either.

A key questions, which I lack the data to answer, is what products of the US can be substituted by Canada or other countries. Much/most of the tech manufacture isn't in the US, and neither is the pharmaceutical manufacturing. There are drug/biotech companies all over the world. The only thing that comes to mind as a US big win is the VC business. And money is horribly mobile and fickle.

Google's AI says airplanes and their engines are a US export. And Boeing has its competition along with Pratt & Whitney.
