jkw··on California exceeds 100% of energy demand with renewables over a record 30 days
Serious question: will the cost of energy come down in California as a result? Why is it still so high?
jkw··on The Seamless Communication models
We're the same team! We have some comparisons in the paper.
jkw··on No Language Left Behind
Evaluation was important to us, and we really wanted to have a benchmark that covers all 200 languages
jkw··on No Language Left Behind
Dhivehi is currently not supported, unfortunately. We view this as a starting point and are committed to expanding to many other languages as in the spirit of our project name.

Full list of currently supported languages can be found here: https://github.com/facebookresearch/flores/tree/main/flores2...

jkw··on No Language Left Behind
Hey all, I work on this project. Full list of languages can be found here: https://github.com/facebookresearch/flores/tree/main/flores2...

As well as in the research paper: https://research.facebook.com/publications/no-language-left-...

jkw··on Faculty hiring dominated by graduates of elite institutions
Seems anecdotally true for many so called "Elite" careers, ie. Investment Banking, Management Consultant, Law, etc. They mainly hire from "Elite" schools.
jkw··on Giving Ada a Chance
Or Cardano
jkw··on Poll: Will you take the Covid vaccine?
It looks like some people in the comments are interpreting it differently
jkw··on Poll: Will you take the Covid vaccine?
I think there's a difference between:

(a) I WILL WAIT because I don't trust it yet, and

(b) I WILL WAIT because I want to let the more at-risk people to have access it to first

That seems to be lost in the poll

jkw··on 750M genetically modified mosquitoes to be released in Florida
2020 code freeze please
jkw··on Lobe.ai – A simple tool for training machine learning models
What type of ML model is it training on? Is there a base pre-train image model it's fine-tuning on top of?
jkw··on The Fall of Silicon Valley
I thought that this article was going talk about how 2020 broke apart SV and caused everyone to scatter. But to say it was 2012? No way. That totally misses out on Uber, Stripe, Coinbase, Lyft, Plaid, and many more.
jkw··on Facebook is a monopoly that buys, copies, kills competitors: antitrust committee
Facebook has been unable to stop new entrants: Pinterest, Snap, Tiktok, Twitter - All global and multi billion dollar companies, and still growing.

More to come are: Telegram, Discord, Houseparty, Clubhouse

Plus global competition from: Wechat, Weibo, Line

Social networks come and go. The space is a lot more whimsical than people think. Remember Friendster, MySpace, AIM. A new challenger will emerge every 3-5 years.

jkw··on 14% of Americans Are Considering a Move Out of Their State Due to Current Events
What's the baseline of each state though? Pre-covid, what % of the state already considered moving?
jkw··on Taiwan managed to build high-speed rail. Why can't California?
California is terrible at managing infrastructure projects.
jkw··on Jony Ive to form independent design company with Apple as client
He’s making more money at Apple than he will leading his own design agency.

This makes me think that he no longer finds his work compelling at Apple. Or Apple decided it’s time for a new leader, but wants things to have a soft landing.

jkw··on In Medieval Europe, No Outfit Was Complete Without a Personal Eating Knife
Ask HN: Do you think this can be a good analogy for gun control?
jkw··on M.B.A. Applications Decline at Harvard, Wharton, Other Elite Schools
I wish this article would touch upon economic trends' impact on MBA applications.

MBA applications go down as the economy performs. The opportunity cost is higher when there are well paying jobs readily available and promotions to be had without needing to go back school.

During a recession, MBA applications should go up as work is not as readily available. People also want to retrain their skills to make themselves more marketable to employers, as anyone else would do by going to vocational schools during hard times.

jkw··on California law requires businesses to let you cancel your subscription online
Will this be true for gyms as well?? That would be a game-changer.
jkw··on [dead]
A mass extinction in progress. Rather an explosion, it’s disguised in a slow dimmer.
jkw··on Jim Black's Steve Jobs Story
yes yes yes
jkw··on Facebook Q1 2018 Earnings Slides [pdf]
Are instagram revenues included the revenue numbers?

Are instagram dau included the dau numbers?

If not, anyone know how to back out those metrics?

jkw··on China Is Building a Rain-Making System Three Times as Big as Spain
This sounds like a potential military weapon as well
jkw··on All disk galaxies rotate once every billion years: study
or computation and/or memory space is limited! so trade-offs are needed
jkw··on Why can’t San Francisco’s tech culture solve the city’s social problems?

jkw··on Steve Jurvetson is out at his own VC firm after allegations of sexual harassment
Reply from Steve Jurvetson:

"I am leaving DFJ to focus on personal matters, including taking legal action against those whose false statements have defamed me."

jkw··on Amazon, Apple, Google and Facebook will all go away within 50 years, says author
Microsoft was mentioned in the article as the Fifth Horsemen. Not part of the original because it's more of a B2B company now.
jkw··on Japan’s ’golden coder’ making games apps aged 82 [video]
can someone list the games she's made? would love to try them out!
jkw··on Saluting Walt Mossberg’s career
A journalist among journalists.

He was probably Steve Job's most respected tech journalist. That's saying a lot. When the early iPhones launched, only a handful of journalists had a review device; Mossberg was one of them.

As opinionated as Jobs was, Mossberg was one of the few people where he would not criticize nor argue when Mossberg had feedback for Apple products.

jkw··on Higher-paid, faster-growing tech jobs are concentrating in 8 US hubs
Breaking out SF from "Silicon Valley" seems like an outdated approach to segment the data. I would say for the past decade, "Silicon Valley" includes SF, Peninsula through San Jose for all intents and purposes. I see people, who live in SF, commute down to Peninsula and vice versa. The job market in the Bay Area is all pretty fluid.
