jkonowitch··on Durable execution should be lightweight
Having used several external orchestrators I can see the appeal of the simplicity of this approach, especially for smaller teams wanting to limit the amount of infrastructure to maintain. Postgres is a proven tool, and as long as you design `@step`s to each perform one non deterministic side effect, I can see this scaling very well both in terms of performance and maintainability.
jkonowitch··on Durable execution should be lightweight
What value does an external orchestrator add for managing complexity that an “embedded” solution could not?
jkonowitch··on Durable execution should be lightweight
Could you describe the scalability issue? Was it due to maintaining a bespoke execution engine in-house, the limits of RDBMS vertical scaling, other?
jkonowitch··on Why privacy is important, and having “nothing to hide” is irrelevant
This issue always boils down to the LOTR argument for me: the surveillance power is too great, and no individual or group can or should be trusted with it, regardless of its actual current or potential future benefits.

The crux of the debate then is where to draw the line between safe and unsafe amounts of power?

jkonowitch··on An open letter to Jeff Bezos: A contract worker’s take on Amazon.com
Is there research to back this up? Ie is it really the case that 'non-executive' workers have no negotiating power? Is this true in all sectors or only some? Anecdotally I've seen instances where non-execs successfully negotiated a salary increase, etc.

jkonowitch··on Call Mom Maybe
Edit: @sneak - apologies, my comment may have lacked empathy of its own. It's quite possible you have a really good reason for the anger that came across in your comment. Not all of us have positive relationships with our families, for example. I understand these subjects can stir powerful emotions, and I'm sure you have a valuable perspective to share on the matter - it's hard to tell, though, from such a curt and seemingly confrontational comment. At any rate, I'm sorry if I hurt your feelings with my own rash and unconsidered response.
jkonowitch··on Call Mom Maybe
Are you kidding me?! Are you completely devoid of empathy? He's not trying to command that anyone do anything, so drop the indignation. This is what we call a human response to grief; his mother is no longer here, and knowing what a wonderful and life-giving relationship that was, he is imploring the rest of us not to take our relationships with our mothers for granted.

jkonowitch··on Show HN: Squaresend - Less annoying mailto links
Neat idea. I think reliability is an important feature to call out on the landing page. If I'm a business owner that depends on this service as a funnel for new clients, for instance, I would want guarantees regarding uptime and reliability.
jkonowitch··on Poll: Do you meditate?
The best way I've found to describe meditation is of giving yourself an opportunity to have no agenda; for 20 minutes a day you ignore the impulse to process every thought, memory, emotion or to plan or worry and just let it be. It's extremely liberating when you first experience the sense of control that comes with being able to let go, and you realize you've been spinning your mental wheels pretty much non-stop with no awareness. It's challenging at first - it's uncomfortable and anxiety provoking - and the benefits don't come for a few months, but I have noticed a marked improvement in my ability to regulate my mood and state of mind as I'm way more aware of the train of thoughts going through my head. Start with just 2 minutes per day and work up to 20 from there - it's worth it.
jkonowitch··on Searching For Beasts In Silicon Valley’s ‘War For Talent’
All of us have different equations with which we evaluate opportunities. An exciting work environment and a chance to build something you believe in may be a perfectly rational reason to work for below-market rates, especially if you take equity, in essence making an investment in the company.
jkonowitch··on Confessions of A Job Destroyer
150 years ago the agricultural sector employed roughly 80% of American workers. Today, it employs less than 3%. It may be hard to imagine looking forward rather than back, but dynamic economies are capable of experiencing such dramatic shifts AND of absorbing and reallocating the labor towards more productive uses. They key thing to understand is that once certain modes of production become less efficient relative to alternatives, often because of technological advances, it frees our resources and productive energies to engage in new enterprises. It's true that employment dislocations that occur from rapid technological advancement can cause great transitional distress; that is why it's important as a society that we find humane and efficient ways of supporting people through these changes. However, the net result of progress is that we are all better off. No one can say exactly what the baristas or the project managers of today will become, no more than anyone could have predicted what would have become of the farmworkers who were displaced in the great migration towards a service economy. But, the last 150 years have seen a veritable explosion in the specialization and profusion of occupations which were previously economically unviable. I see no reason why we should not expect the same kind of evolution going forward.
jkonowitch··on It's easy to blame minorities
While his claims certainly aren't airtight, ie the cynical idea that Yahoo is blaming its remote workers for the trouble, I do think there is some truth to the general sentiment; failing companies often grasp for any action they can take to stop the bleeding, and these actions, undertaken in haste or amidst great anxiety, can yield very little value or even cause harm. I'm not sure if that is what is happening at Yahoo, but I've definitely seen it happen before.
jkonowitch··on Are We Suffering From Mobile App Burnout?
There's a really pernicious attitude of permissiveness, even encouragement, towards theft and evasion of payment for digital goods in many of pockets of online culture. It is disheartening.
jkonowitch··on The DNC's voter registration app is now free and open-source software
I think your concern is legitimate. I imagine that organizations wishing to make use of the app or modify it will imbue it with trust by associating themselves with it - ie a League of Women Voters logo somewhere on the page. As the article points out though, there are a lot of regulations in this space so I'm not sure if that is allowed.

As far as SSL goes yes I think at the very least the production.rb file should declare `config.force_ssl = true`.

jkonowitch··on The DNC's voter registration app is now free and open-source software
Great ideas. I hadn't thought at all about modifications to the UI - ie focusing on accessibility concerns for older voters, or supporting multiple languages.

Another possibility: feature that lets people "pledge" to vote by entering their email address. This could be useful to canvassers on the ground trying to catch busy people passing by without the time to fill out a form at that moment. The app could then email the voter to follow up, as well as alert them when their state's deadline is drawing near.

Any thoughts on what could be built out/on top of this application?
jkonowitch··on From Basecamp to Blimp in three clicks
This is minor, but I don't think the umbrella icon makes sense for the "Small" plan given the constellation of craft that you use to illustrate the growing size of the larger plans. Perhaps a bicycle or a small compact car icon would do better?

jkonowitch··on Forget the last one. Do the next one.
In general, I think this makes sense, but it can lead to some pretty unhealthy patterns in my experience. I would emphasize to those of us with insatiable ambitions not to gloss over the "pause to celebrate and appreciate" step. Celebrating our accomplishments can often get lost in the incessant drive for success. This can leave us feeling empty and dissatisfied, which is no fun at all.
