jkmcf··on Paris Closed 100 Streets to Cars for Good. Now, the City Is a Cyclists' Paradise
I think a happy compromise would be

1. Ban all non-electric vehicles (because noise and pollution)

2. Allow electric taxis/ride share vehicles

3. Convert all reasonable roads to one-way, half for vehicles half for bicycles and other small transportation options (I’m thinking scooters, Segways, and such)

4. Remaining roads for bicycles and other small vehicles

What do y’all thinking of bringing back horse drawn carriages?

jkmcf··on Elon Musk's Community Notes Feature on X Is Working
FWIW, there is Mozilla's Fakespot extension.
jkmcf··on Wisdom from Marcus Aurelius
Good emperor, bad father? Definitely a good example against primogeniture.
jkmcf··on Apple's risky bet on CarPlay
Recently had two rental cars with CarPlay. Oddly, the experience with a Chevy (who is abandoning CarPlay support) was much better than the Hyundai, though its main problem was connecting and constantly asking permission.

Since my older cars do not have it, having a great mount (Peak Design) makes a huge difference, but damn I want it integrated if only for the bigger screen.

jkmcf··on Why does the American Diabetes Association push insulin?
Surprisingly, cauliflower crust pizza is actually pretty good if you are ok with thin crust pizza.
jkmcf··on Uri Berliner Resignation Letter
Perhaps the suspension is disparaging?
jkmcf··on Houston Is Going Broke Because of Its Sprawl
I agree with most of their content, but I've never been able to figure out a solution that didn't cost "all the money".

Of course, I'm biased since I desperately want walkable neighborhoods far from street traffic, but the developers bribe their way into creating more ginormous parking lots, strip malls, and standalone fast food restaurants near the sprawling McMansions on postage stamp lots.

Town planners have no vision and/or balls to build communities.

jkmcf··on Marissa Mayer's Startup
I like the appeal of throwback tech. Most users do not want obvious AI. The trick is providing user-desired, friendly features that deliver high value.

E.g., I don’t want to create dashboards and other monitoring alerts in Datadog, just show me the real problems. A super slow query running once per day or a fast-enough query running 10x per second aren’t problems, which are the recommendations I get from these tools today.

jkmcf··on Intel One Mono
I've been using Commit Mono for the past 6 months or so and love the clarity at small sizes (for my eyes, at least). Before that, I mainly used Source Code Pro and Comic Mono. My long term friend is Bitstream Vera Sans Mono.

jkmcf··on Ask HN: As a Developer What Tedious Task Do You Find Takes to Much of Your Time?
Setting up test data for non-trivial contexts.
jkmcf··on Ask HN: Which book are you currently reading?
I'm reading the very well written "Weavers, Scribes, and Kings: A New History of the Ancient Near East"[1].

I'm also reading the English translation of Johan Rundberg's "The Queen of Thieves (The Moonwind Mysteries Book 2)"[2] to my daughter who loves mysteries. It's much different from Book 1, but in a refreshing way. Most mystery series are kind of the same-but-different. Book 2 is darker in a more personal way for the protagonist.

jkmcf··on The Reddits
With all the Reddit users effectively quitting because of the 3rd party app stupidity, why didn't Reddit make ad delivery part of the terms of API usage or some other solution?

It's not like their costs go up because you access via the API vs the website/the official app.

jkmcf··on Need Help Selecting University
My observation is that you will make the biggest difference in your education. You will get out what you put in unless you are gifted.

Next difference is in-school opportunities, but this might be less important for a BS CS versus physics.

Don't ignore your non degree interests. They can make college life much better.

jkmcf··on Elon Musk Has a Giant Charity. Its Money Stays Close to Home

The problem is how can you protect honest charities and prevent these shenanigans?
Taxes and penalties if the money isn't being used for philanthropic activities? And not just being moved around to other shelters/friends/etc...
jkmcf··on Injured on Boeing 787 as "strong shake" sent heads into ceiling
My brother was on a flight, to Bermuda no less, and the drink carts were out. They all hit the ceiling, making quite a mess.

jkmcf··on How I Learned to Concentrate
While most people here seem to be dismissive, it's not like his books are targeted at the already successful, accomplished, or polished. They are meant to show people a way to become more successful in a world that has too many distractions. Not every job supports deep work and the other approaches, but many people, especially students, will benefit. I know I could have used it 30+ years ago!

I've only read Deep Work, but I found it very motivating and have tried to incorporate some of the lessons into my life. Now, (literally) buying into the whole ecosystem of Cal Newport is probably overkill, but occasionally listening to his podcast, which essentially answers the same questions over and over and over again, can be motivating and uplifting for those of us who are lacking in the perfection department.

jkmcf··on My co-founder wants to bring his wife as a late joining co-founder
Split his shares in two?

While not in a business, here's my experience:

When I was young, I rented a house with what I thought were good friends. One friend wanted to bring his gf. We were friends, so I said sure. Turns out, both couples alienated me beyond my comprehension. They weren't mean, I just didn't exist as they tended to each other.

One couple I stayed friends with, the second didn't fare so well.

The moral of my story is that the dynamics will change, and you are the odd one out. Best of luck!

jkmcf··on Rivian R2
Beautiful inside and out. The charging port looks like the first thing to go if rear ended.
jkmcf··on Study: 61 UK firms tried a 4-day workweek and after a year, they still love it
I actually like working, minus the business/management BS. Current $job is very good. Would love a 5h/day expectation, though. I'd work 7pm to midnight and be more productive than 9-5.
jkmcf··on Linus Torvalds is looking for a more modern GUI editor (2023)
One solution is to cozy up to Zed’s developers and have a first party uemacs mode.

Another is to write his own from scratch, ala git, and create another platform that takes on a life of its own.

jkmcf··on RubberDuck is now available on the App Store
Kudos on delivering the app at 29MB. I was shocked it was so small.
jkmcf··on Hackers interrupt UAE TV streaming services with deepfake news
I've been wondering for a while about when country-sponsored, network-base attacks be considered an act of war.
jkmcf··on A seafood firm wants to farm octopus. Activists say they're too smart for that
If this was on the big island, it was recently shut down. We were there two years ago and it was really interesting...

jkmcf··on Cork is displacing plastics and creating a billion-dollar industry
I was wondering how frequently cork can be harvested from a tree: 9 years

Also, it sounds like the CO2 extraction is increased in order to regrow the bark.

jkmcf··on Ask HN: What are you reading Feb 2024
Similar here! My grandparents had quite a few AC books as well as a subscription to Agatha Christie's Mysteries (IIRC the name).

I started reading her works to my daughter because she loves mysteries.

Quite a few stories are available for free at Guttenberg and, of course, Libby.

jkmcf··on Ask HN: What are you reading Feb 2024
This past week I started Ursula Le Guin's "Worlds of Exile and Illusion: Three Complete Novels of the Hainish Series in One Volume--Rocannon's World; Planet of Exile; City of Illusions"

These are her earliest, published novels. The introduction is a bit odd as the author hasn't read much le Guin including her most popular, award winning books other than The Wizard of Earthsea.

I'm not much of a critical reader, but these definitely do not have the philosophical depth (or I don't have the philosophical depth to pic up on it) of The Dispossessed and friends, but they are interesting and well written.

jkmcf··on U.S. army drops requirement for high school diploma (2022)

TL;DR: Costa Rica has no threatening armies around it, so they don't need one.

There's also a bit about Panama being chill (possibly because of all the business generated by the canal), and Nicaragua basically held in place by international law.

jkmcf··on Induce Lucid Dreaming
I'm not sure lucid dreaming is all it's cracked up to be. I've experienced it every night for most of my life. It's all quite entertaining -- I have some really awesome dreams -- but the dreams are also very visceral and a negative[1] dream can leave me emotional throughout the day.

Unsure if related, but I rarely wake feeling refreshed. Need to get a referral for sleep study...

[1] Sadly, none of the dreams are positive.

jkmcf··on Ireland housing crisis: "Social contract has ruptured"
Supposedly, 5 stories or so is the best bang for buck due to going higher incurs more significant costs. At least that’s what I’ve heard in the US regarding defeating sprawl…
jkmcf··on Posthog is closing their Slack community in favor of forum
I’m surprised I haven’t seen a chat interface on top of the Discourse, or other, forum.

Discord introduced subject-based chats, but they seem secondary to the fire hose of the topic channels and not used much where I participate.
