jkeuhlen··on Estimates that mineral levels in vegetables have dropped by up to 90% since 1914
I don't think the lack of minerals in food explains obesity issues. In fact, I'm pretty sure we know what causes obesity. Significantly lower levels of activity and increased sugar consumption are two of the main culprits.
jkeuhlen··on Ask HN: What do you dislike about your RSS reader?
Interesting, thanks! I hadn't thought about that kind of a use case before.
jkeuhlen··on Ask HN: Are there companies out there building innovative, new newsfeeds?
I've currently been working on this as a side project when I have time. It's still in early infancy, but my plan is to try to innovate in lots of those areas. Specifically by not implementing complex algorithms for ranking or filtering and instead building a complete user-suite of preferences that individuals can fine-tune. The other portion is to change the news feed to be a single source at a time, forcing users to focus on one thing at once and avoid infinite headline scroll.

Like I said, it's still early, but I'd love to hear other people's thoughts.

jkeuhlen··on Google, YouTube to Pay $170M Penalty over Collecting Kids' Personal Info
As someone from the US, I've never heard about this before. Could you explain what that is? Why is there a "I'm from the US button" on sites?
jkeuhlen··on Advertising Is a Cancer on Society
What are the other models that exist and are currently working? As someone who is looking to build a free consumer product, I don't know what else exists that can offset my costs other than advertising. I hate paywalls just as much as advertising, so I'm opposed to just charging for access.
jkeuhlen··on Infinite work is less work
Base is great but the most powerful libraries aren't included :)
jkeuhlen··on Infinite work is less work
Have you tried working through a more structured learning process like Haskelbook? Once you get the basics, the types begin to add lots of clarity to what is going on in a function and make it easier and faster to comprehend complicated behavior.

You can also swap out that fst3 for a lens! (^. _3) works for any size tuple.
jkeuhlen··on Is the Immediate Playback of Events Changing Children’s Memories?
Forbes is good and bad. It's good when written by Forbes, but half of the articles I come across there these days are from "contributors" which can be just as bad as reading HuffPo.
jkeuhlen··on Should Failing Phish Tests Be a Fireable Offense?
But wouldn't you reply to the address it specified instead of the source of the spoofing? I thought that was why most phishing emails include a link rather than asking you to reply.
jkeuhlen··on YC's request for startups: Government 2.0
Interesting idea, it makes sense for the most part! I'd worry about needed "clearance" to view claim information however. How often is this actual DoD clearance? It would seem unlikely to be able to get API level access for anything restricted to be able to package it up for claimants.
jkeuhlen··on YC's request for startups: Government 2.0
What kinds of issues are you thinking about tackling in that space?
jkeuhlen··on Excessive Consumption Limits Creativity (2016)
I'm curious about this as well. I've hard a hard time finding any real science about this kind of neurochemistry since most of it seems to be "tech is bad for you" blog posts. It seems to be based on something many people recognize in their own lives (getting 'addicted' to email, always on mentality, etc) but I'd love to see some actual evidence of what this does to our brains.

jkeuhlen··on Burger King is rolling out meatless Impossible Whoppers nationwide
My wife was diagnosed with celiac last year, and we've found the same to be true of eating GF alternatives. Foods that try to replicate gluten tend to be much worse than things that are just good without it.
jkeuhlen··on Ask HN: One-person SaaS apps that are profitable?
Just curious, did you go about setting up a formal corporation for the product? I'm thinking about setting up my own SaaS product and I'm not sure if I need to do anything on the legal/business side.
