jkaljundi··on Hearing and Doing
Wonder where does it come that: “Cleared for the visual, report three mile left base for Runway 31,” becomes “Cleared to land, 31” or “Line up and wait” was interpreted as “Cleared for takeoff” Maybe I fly too little as a private pilot but I can't imagine those interpretations happening.
jkaljundi··on BBC gives up on Threads, sticks with Mastodon
Since Threads is still available only in selected countries - most importantly blocking Europe - it can't be taken seriously.
jkaljundi··on Cyclists now outnumber motorists in City of London
Tractors and snowplows. Salt kills the bicycles and salty slush is much worse to drive in. Hard packed snow is actually the best to ride on.

Interestingly Oulu bike roads clearing contract states the company doing the snowplowing can do inspections only on bicycles, not cars :)

jkaljundi··on Elektronika MK-61
Loved my MK-85, did a lot of BASIC programming on it as a kid. Using pixel graphics you could do even games. I think the demo game it came with was horce racing jumping over fences.
jkaljundi··on Squad303
Yup. In war you have to do whatever it takes. In addition to direct SMS we should think how to better mass email and call Russian people as well. Let’s do it!
jkaljundi··on Patreon suspends Come Back Alive page for Ukrainian army donations
Shame on them.
jkaljundi··on On the removal of Come Back Alive
Absolutely shameful.

jkaljundi··on Oven Stoves and Heat Walls (2008)
From the point of ecology and nature the best thing would be to leave the deadwood in the forests.
jkaljundi··on Oven Stoves and Heat Walls (2008)
Something to keep in mind though: https://www.theguardian.com/environment/2021/dec/17/wood-bur... "Wood burning stoves in urban areas are responsible for almost half of people’s exposure to cancer-causing chemicals found in air pollution particles, new research has shown."
jkaljundi··on Oven Stoves and Heat Walls (2008)
Strange sentence there: "In a room that is heated by an oven stove, a thermometer can hardly measure anything." Saying that as someone heating my house twice per day by wood brick oven and having multiple thermometers to measure the ambient air in the rooms warming.
jkaljundi··on 68k.news: A Netscape 1.1 makeover of Google News
Remember doing a news site back in 1994. This is exactly like it looked. Much before Netscape and MCC though ;)
jkaljundi··on Ghana will no longer sell cocoa to Switzerland
Netflix series Rotten has a good episode on cocoa lifecycle and the problems involved: https://www.netflix.com/ee/title/80146284
jkaljundi··on Can you treat loneliness by creating an imaginary friend?
The topic came up with friends one night. What seemed pretty common was people talking in their heads or out loud to their passed relatives, parents, less so friends. Sharing your thoughts with your gone mother or father, brother or sister, grandparents - and hear back their thoughts - can be nice and assuring. Gives you a sounding board in your head for your own thoughts, to take time off and reflect. Kind of like journaling. They are real in a sense that they did exist, but imaginary because they don't anymore.
jkaljundi··on The pandemic is bringing us closer to our robot takeout future
RaaS - robots as a service. It's interesting to not companies like Starship do not sell their robots, but provide everything as a service.
jkaljundi··on The pandemic is bringing us closer to our robot takeout future
Actually no, Starship is like 99% autonomous and self-driving, and just a few % of special cases are handled manually by the operators.
jkaljundi··on The pandemic is bringing us closer to our robot takeout future
They temporarily laid off just the low-level operators, think of them as call centre staff or Uber drivers. These are the people who when a robot gets stuck help them cross a street or navigate around an obstacle. Think of them as support side of the business. The only reason being because US universities are on hold because of the coronavirus.

The new product development, software and hardware side is still thriving.

jkaljundi··on HQ Trivia shuts down after acquisition falls through
What are the best trivia apps nowadays? Have been looking but haven't found anything great. Still feels like there is an unmet need. I still love Quizup though ...
jkaljundi··on Climatescape.org – Mapping the global landscape of climate-saving organizations
Since forestry is so big, I would suggest to keep it separate. Also broad biodiversity and nature organisations probably should have a separate category, not me under land use.
jkaljundi··on OKRs from a development team’s perspective
Having worked with hundreds of companies on their OKRs at Weekdone, I've seen many hack OKRs on individual level and use them "wrong" by having the KRs as milestones, tasks and projects. Yes, absolutely illegal by some leading OKR consultants and thinkers. But works like magic to keep goals in front of people.

Having the choice of having a developer or designer a visionary KR of improving x or y by z% vs getting a project, milestone or task done, in many cases the latter keeps them focused vs them rolling their ideas on the % KR.

jkaljundi··on Show HN: A browser extension which blocks chat/helpdesk widgets
Was using Snapengage before Intercom and the option to set chats to appear after x seconds (usually used 45-90) or pages visited was so good. The response rates were actually higher than for the more dumb Intercom immediate popups.
