jkaljundi··on “A Horrifically Bad Idea”: Smartphone Voting Is Coming
As an Estonian who has voted online and via mobile ID for years, couldn't imagine going to vote in a physical location, using pen and paper.
jkaljundi··on The “Run Less Software” philosophy
Initially Intercom was all about being great in a niche (on-site chat messaging), doing one thing well, focusing. Then growth came, demands for expansion, and so their mantra switched to all-in-one suites. So did their content marketing.
jkaljundi··on Ask HN: How to stop feeling depressed about whether you will be successful?
If you have a room to live in and food on your table, you already are successful. Enjoy life.
jkaljundi··on Asana raises $75M Series D round led by Generation Investment Management
That's really good and above average. How different it is for you in the SME/SMB segment vs enterprise? Churn is much higher for small 5-10 person installations usually, as the switching costs are small and often even initial payments are to continue trialing it. Much different for 1000 users implementation.
jkaljundi··on Asana raises $75M Series D round led by Generation Investment Management
Often for task and project management software the churn is high and customer lifetime short.
jkaljundi··on Why Personas Fail
Their older article of matching personas with Jobs-to-Be-Done has always been a good one: https://www.nngroup.com/articles/personas-jobs-be-done/

So is Intercom's: https://blog.intercom.com/when-personas-fail-you/

It also depends where you use these. While personas are often low value in product design and UX (where JTBD can shine), in marketing and sales personas can be a big help (although even there, JTBD has strong role).

jkaljundi··on Stamps for UX and Product designers
Pencil prototypes in notebook, or mockups/hi-fi on screen.
jkaljundi··on Stamps for UX and Product designers
I guess we're too electronic here in Estonia, with all the e-signatures and all. I always struggle to find a friend to print something, need that once in a few months. Same with many other companies here.

What exactly would we need a printer for? What should we print out? Just curious.

jkaljundi··on Stamps for UX and Product designers
Who still nowadays has a printer? Even most offices don't.
jkaljundi··on Why Timber Towers Are on the Rise in France
Modern wood is much more fire resistant than concrete or steel https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=t-3oEb8KUiQ - it's an imaginary myth, that wood is dangerous.
jkaljundi··on Biggest drop in Facebook organic reach we have seen
RSS feed ads used to be quite a thing.
jkaljundi··on Front-End Checklist
Have not found the crawl rates changed for sites where everything is well linked together. Then again, these have been just small sites with a few million pages.
jkaljundi··on Front-End Checklist
Are sitemaps still a thing that really matters?

jkaljundi··on Fingerprints are usernames, not passwords (2013)
In the same way SSN's in the US are usernames, not passwords.
jkaljundi··on CoinDash’s ICO Website Has Been Hacked
Over-The-Counter eg not via exchanges, but directly.
jkaljundi··on Filing Taxes in Japan Is a Breeze. Why Not in the US?

jkaljundi··on Marc Andreessen: “Take the Ego Out of Ideas”
Actually it's vice versa: you get motion sickness more if there are no outside visual cues on your orientation.
jkaljundi··on On the typography of flight deck documentation – NASA (1992)
I've seen some newer style (often grey/blue/wight on grey) tower / control radar screens and they seem so much better than the old black ones.
jkaljundi··on Ask HN: Building a side project that makes money. Where to start?
It's useful to start visiting https://growthhackers.com/posts and reading stuff posted there daily. It's like HN for online marketeers.

There is also this one: Legible, are you sure? An experimentation-based typographical design in Safety-critical context http://lii-enac.fr/articles/vinot-chi-2012.pdf

jkaljundi··on Thanks for Submitting Your Résumé to This Black Hole
Wonder if there's also a technological new service that could change all this?
jkaljundi··on Thanks for Submitting Your Résumé to This Black Hole
Humour (or humor in American English) is the tendency of particular cognitive experiences to provoke laughter and provide amusement. The term derives from the humoral medicine of the ancient Greeks, which taught that the balance of fluids in the human body, known as humours (Latin: humor, "body fluid"), controlled human health and emotion.
jkaljundi··on Thanks for Submitting Your Résumé to This Black Hole
Have been toying around with an idea of recruitment and job application service which would try to turn the tables and show candidates who's interested in them. So instead of applying, the first step would be a question from candidate to company saying "tell me more about this job". The company would then need to actively get back to the candidate. The advantage to the company would be a much larger pool of candidate contacts, although they would also need to work those contacts more.

It might not be a solution for jobs and company types described in this thread, but in many industries, company types and countries the lack of candidates is a much bigger problem than too many candidates.

jkaljundi··on Ask HN: How do you set prices?
How long is your sales cycle from visitor to paid? If less than 1-2 months, just play around double the price for a month and see what happens.

Having run and advised numerous companies over years, increasing prices is one of the best decisions a startup can do. In 90% of cases there are no ill effects and just increased income which helps buld a better product. Profitability FTW.

jkaljundi··on Village Capital is ditching Demo Days
Can you tell more about the experience? Indie.vc otherwise sounds fantastic. Good option to other debt and loan options for startups.

jkaljundi··on Ask HN: How would you turn Twitter around?
Threads.
jkaljundi··on The new Nokia phones are here: Nokia 6, 5, 3 & 3310
Since most Android phones nowadays are anyway a commodity, success is much more about sales, marketing and branding than the phone itself.
