jjuel··on I Just Hit $100k/year On GitHub Sponsors
Median home cost in Nebraska $168,900. Median home cost in California $552,800.

Yeah I think 100k a year would go a little farther in one of these places than the other...

jjuel··on Lenovo to Certify ThinkPad and ThinkStation Workstation Portfolio for Linux
My T480s had 0 issues with Debian 10. It doesn't have a fingerprint reader which I hear is a main bug a boo with Thinkpads.
jjuel··on Trump threatens to 'close' down social media platforms
Does the source matter when what he says is provably false? BTW I am all for them fact checking ALL of the politicians.
jjuel··on Trump threatens to 'close' down social media platforms
It is crazy to see how well he knows his base and how to get them to rally close to an election. Making them think everything is a liberal bias against them, and if they don't vote for his big government agenda they will receive a big government agenda. This is just one more way for him to get his base to believe everything he says versus people who actually prove what he says is a lie. He wants state run media and social media just like China. As much as he talks about hating China he would love to be China.
jjuel··on John Carmack is reading and contributing to OpenBSD source code
Considering at the time he was working for Oculus which is owned by Facebook it sort of makes sense.
jjuel··on What other coronaviruses tell us about SARS-CoV-2
This is what worries me the most. More research needs to be done, but if you can get reinfected it seems like herd immunity is a pipe dream. If immunity doesn't last long then does a vaccine even work? Now I am very clueless on all this so I could be way off. In fact if someone does know more about virology and could explain to me where I am wrong that would be great!
jjuel··on Free America Now (@elonmusk)
He can never be President as he was born in South Africa.
jjuel··on Apple aims to sell Macs with its own chips starting in 2021
I for one cannot wait for an ARM Macbook! Might be some pain early, but in the long run it will be great for laptops and computers in general.
jjuel··on Eclipse Theia 1.0 – Open-Source Alternative to Visual Studio Code
So you mean Sublime Text? (Yes I understand it isn't open source)
jjuel··on Ask HN: Best sleep trackers?
Do you wear your watch when sleeping then now? When do you charge it?
jjuel··on ReMarkable’s redesigned e-paper tablet is more powerful and more papery
I so badly wanted the first one. This one looks even better. However, with twins on the way probably still not in the cards, but damn I can dream.
jjuel··on A Look Back at Manufacturing Linux Hardware
I definitley read that wrong. Whoops! My apologies! For some reason I thought he said Stop instead of Start.
jjuel··on A Look Back at Manufacturing Linux Hardware
I go the other way. I wish all laptop manufacturers would stop making 15in laptops with numpads. The way the keyboard is offset makes it terrible in my opinion. Of course I don't do a lot of stuff that requires me to make use of a numpad either.
jjuel··on Open Source Hardware: The Rise of RISC-V
Security and luxury features. I mean the amount of tech that Yaris has compared to that old Metro is a Grand Canyon sized gorge. Add in safety features like air bags, and crash protection. The weight can increase quickly. So while the car may have weighed less you were also far less likely to enjoy driving that car, and far less likely to survive a serious crash.
jjuel··on I Want Off Mr. Golang's Wild Ride
But you knew C# was Windows only. Go was always touted as a cross platform solution due to statically compiled binaries. If said binaries have issues on Windows due to design decisions it seems like a language fault.
jjuel··on YouTube can restrict PragerU because it is a private forum, appeals court rules
I still don't think that would be a First Amendment issue.
jjuel··on Nintendo Play Station Super NES CD-ROM Prototype
To be fair somewhere in the multiverse this did become the real Playstation.
jjuel··on Tsundoku
As much as I like to buy books I have realized it is much more economical to just check it out from the library.
jjuel··on Tsundoku
I am in the same boat, but have been making a conscious effort to get more reading in. Just squeezing time here and there. Waking up earlier in the morning, before bed when I had been winding down with YouTube videos or piddling on the internet, toliet trips. In the end it takes longer to finsh by reading fewer pages at a time, but it is working at actually reading more.
jjuel··on Nextspace – NeXTSTEP-like desktop environment for Linux
May have to install CentOS just so I can use this. I love the look of this.
jjuel··on Will Spotify Ruin Podcasting?
You go where consumers are. I mean there are plenty of businesses that don't have their own web page, but do have a facebook page. Not only is it free, but it is easier to set up. Plus you know that is where all your consumers spend all their time. So if I were a small podcast and knew I could reach the most audience on Spotify that is where I would be.
jjuel··on The Odin Programming Language
I mean it obviously exists. He livestreams coding on the language and in the language. Sure very few people can actually use it right now, but existence is not in question.
jjuel··on Pinebook Pro – First Impressions and Setup Tips
I have been looking for an ARM laptop at a reasonable price. It looks like this might just check the boxes I am looking for. Can't wait for the US version to be back in stock!
jjuel··on Pinebook Pro – First Impressions and Setup Tips
But that is 100 watt hours. If my math is correct (which it is possibly very wrong) this battery is only 50WH. My guess is this is to help keep cost down not because it wouldn't be allowed on a plane.
jjuel··on Comma Two Devkit
You are already sharing a road with people who are constantly distracted, drunk, or other. I would say the roads would be a much better place if there were more people who had a computer driving them.
jjuel··on Ask HN: Books you plan to read in 2020?
Billion Dollar Whale - Tom Wright and Bradley Hope

Bayesian Statistics the Fun Way - Will Kurt

jjuel··on Music for Programming (2011)
I found The Social Network soundtrack works decent for me. Of course I also like Retrowave/Synthwave and Eurobeat. They may not be the "best" for concentration and working, but I like them and they seem to help.
jjuel··on Twitter funding a team to develop an open standard for social media

jjuel··on Using Makefile(s) for Go
Not related to the contents of the article, but I love the font on that site. I also love the simplicity of the site as well. Nothing takes away from the ability to read. It is so clear and concise.
jjuel··on How “randomizers” are breathing new life into old games
Did the internet actually eradicate boredom or did it just eradicate focus?
