jjeaff··on Why is the Oral-B iOS app almost 300 MB? And why is Colgate's app even bigger..?
the one reason I have used the app is for my kids. it plays animations while they brush and keeps stats and let's them pick avatar colors and stuff as rewards.
jjeaff··on Just use fucking paper, man
My problem with paper is that I can't keep up with paper. I will lose it several times a day, and inevitably, I will lose it permanently after a year or two. I need the sync and findability that an app on a device affords.
jjeaff··on Why are so many car YouTubers quitting?
Yes, I realize that is the contract. But are they allowing their view counts to be audited by an unbiased 3rd party? I wouldn't be surprised if they are using "Hollywood accounting" to calculate those revenue shares.
jjeaff··on Postmortem of my 9 year journey at Google
sometimes if they pay you a large salary, the only thing they are taking from you is your ability to work for a competitor.
jjeaff··on Postmortem of my 9 year journey at Google
and then, after all that bad leadership and bureaucracy, one of the top executives (Schmidt) blames google's lost lead in AI on the workers who don't want to work anymore and are just concerned with getting all the perks and work life balance.
jjeaff··on Cow and calf die after cyberattack on milking robot
75 cows is a small hobby farm. I can only speak to beef cattle, it's possible that dairy cows are much more maintenance, but for beef cattle, basically no one needs any kind of tech help to keep track of the health of 75 heifers and cows.
jjeaff··on Why are so many car YouTubers quitting?
yes, according to Google, that's the split. But you are relying on Google to correctly report the revenue and correctly report which videos it should be attributed to. How sure are we that Google is being honest with how they are handling things? They have been proven to be quite the liars in the past.
jjeaff··on Google is a very strange monopolist
Something interesting that I think will come of this is that Google will no longer be able to pay companies like Apple for their default. The $20B a year they pay Apple accounts for about 20% of their net profit. I'm confident Apple will find just about exactly that amount in their books to replace that loss.

On a separate note, does this mean the end of Firefox? almost 100% of their revenue is from google paying to be the default. Will Microsoft pay anything close to that if they don't need to bid against Google for the space?

jjeaff··on Show HN: Play with an interactive heatmap of SF crime (and other cities)
I'm sure, like anything, there is incentive and opportunity to manipulate the numbers. but I don't think it would be easy to do without being found out. Police precincts do a lot of paperwork and behind any statistics, they are going to need the paperwork for individual cases to back up the numbers they submit. and if they are going to under report, they will need to destroy a lot of paperwork. but my intuition is that while leadership may want to under report crime, cops will usually want to report as much as possible to prove that they are busy and necessary. so the balance likely gets us acceptably accurate numbers.
jjeaff··on Prevention of HIV
the jury is still out on whether COVID originated from a lab. it seems very possible, but there is still little evidence that proves it was created in a lab.
jjeaff··on Ask HN: Best way to learn robotics with a 10 year old?
Sadly, they discontinued Mindstorms a few years ago. Though, I'm sure you can still buy used/new kits from 3rd parties.
jjeaff··on Stripe acquires Lemon Squeezy
I would much rather Stripe had bought it than PayPal. I'm still mad that they purchased Braintree and ruined it.
jjeaff··on Alexa is in millions of households and Amazon is losing billions
it has to be intentional. almost any two products that you might want to compare are always using different units. haagan Daaz pints are always shown with different units than the larger haagan daaz.
jjeaff··on Alexa is in millions of households and Amazon is losing billions
also good for setting multiple cooking timers.
jjeaff··on Photo appears to capture path of bullet used in assassination attempt
because there are a million articles about that. this one is about the one in a million shot the camera man got.
jjeaff··on Batteries: How cheap can they get?
you can order through Alibaba, but there are so many suppliers and not all are reputable, so it's a good idea to search around on some of the solar forums for recommendations.
jjeaff··on Noam Chomsky 'no longer able to talk' after 'medical event'
Regardless of whether you think vaccines should be required or not, the mRNA COVID vaccines have objectively proven to be both safe and effective. Though not as effective as everyone would have liked at reducing spread, it certainly reduced severity of cases.
jjeaff··on A new world of DIY medical testing
I think your assessment of the efficacy of masks is a bit facile. From what I understand, most airborne viral particles will tend to float on aerosolized matter, much of which is over 2.5 microns.

Filtration is a statistics game and so is catching a virus. The more particle exposure you get, the more likely you are to get infected. The more mask material you have between you and the particles carrying the virus, the fewer reach your body.

jjeaff··on Adults and teens turn to 'dumbphones' to cut screen time
if you have a bowl of candy on your desk, do you eat more or less than usual?
jjeaff··on Microsoft Lays Off 1,500 Workers, Blames "AI Wave"
it's certainly not a bad economy right now. Record low unemployment, record high stock market prices. Inflation is back to reasonable rates. Prices are inflated, but that alone does not define the economy.
jjeaff··on Microsoft Lays Off 1,500 Workers, Blames "AI Wave"
yes, but you would assume that if they are leading the way in AI product development, that they would need more employees than ever.
jjeaff··on Trump pledges to commute sentence of Silk Road founder Ross Ulbricht if elected
I mostly agree, but I would like to see the full context of the hitman stuff. My understanding is that it was a law enforcement plant that encouraged him to hire a hitman and then referred him to one, which was of course also a plant. Still bad, but also seems a bit like entrapment.
jjeaff··on GRC SpinRite
I would never trust a drive bought on eBay or Amazon unless I could verify the specific seller. There are a lot of Samsung fakes out there.
jjeaff··on GRC SpinRite
the simplest explanation for what spinrite does that I have heard is that on spinning rust drives, it simply tries to access the same bad data over and over until it finally (sometimes) gets a result. which makes sense that it would work (sometimes) because hard drives that are going bad tend to do so intermittently.
jjeaff··on Goodix Fingerprint Drivers for Linux (Or at Least Debian)
I have also seen a recent case where they forced someone to give up their password. So I'm not sure you are safe either way.
jjeaff··on US Justice Department to seek breakup of Live Nation-Ticketmaster
the huge upcharge on tickets is usually from scalpers that are allowed to buy and resell on the platform. are artists and venues somehow in on the scalping? I have suspected as much, but I have no evidence.
jjeaff··on Scandal at America's top science fair
they aren't necessarily learning anything from their parents. their parents are doing most of the work.
jjeaff··on Scandal at America's top science fair
any tests will always be gamed by those with the resources to game them. either ethically (through special tutors and private programs) or unethically (cheating).
jjeaff··on Boeing engineer tells senate about 'manufacturing shortcuts' [video]
Except the first one had already testified and the second had already taken depositions which are usually admissible in court.
jjeaff··on New startup sells coffee through SSH
I suppose on a very complex system, that could be a big deal. But I think the last site I did it on was running on AWS so all ports were closed unless I specifically opened them for a specific purpose and it was just a few tweaks I had to make to pass. I normally only have 80 and 443 open to the outside world.
