jjeaff··on Tesla (TSLA) accounting raises red flags as report shows $1.4B missing
I would too. if that was true, but it's not, so I'm not.
jjeaff··on Voice of America has been shut down
That's not fortune, it's by design. The administration is kicking out any journalists that stand up to them.
jjeaff··on TSMC expected to announce $100B investment in U.S.
I believe Biden said that the US plan, in the case of a Chinese invasion of Taiwan, would be to destroy the chip fabs.
jjeaff··on DOGE's only public ledger is riddled with mistakes
toothless? they have arbitrarily axed entire departments and fires tens of thousands without cause. they apparently have far too many teeth.
jjeaff··on Software engineering job openings hit five-year low?
Returns are no longer the actual goal. The actual goal is the perception of far reaching future returns. The perception of those returns is much more valuable than the actual returns. Because the wealthy don't want profits and dividends that get taxed. They want ever increasing stock prices so they can continuously grow their asset base to borrow against so they can never sell said assets this triggering capital gains taxes.
jjeaff··on Everyone knows your location: tracking myself down through in-app ads
I'll answer the, "Does disabling it void your warranty?" question. The answer is almost always "no". Unless the modification you make to something actually directly or indirectly caused damage to it, companies in the US cannot "void the warranty".
jjeaff··on FDA Approves drug to treat pain without opioid effects
one would assume that it was tested on minor surgeries.
jjeaff··on Apple and SpaceX link up to support Starlink satellite network on iPhones
Technically, the majority of Americans voted for something other than what we got.
jjeaff··on Sam Altman said startups with $10M were 'hopeless' competing with OpenAI
The main thing is OpenAI itself. Altman has long pitched it as an open, non-profit and raised hundreds of millions on that. Turns out it's not open and now has been positioned as a for-profit entity owned by a non-profit that is trying to convert itself to a for-profit.
jjeaff··on The impact of competition and DeepSeek on Nvidia
it uses a fractional amount of GPUs though.
jjeaff··on Former tech CEO suing to get the record of his arrest removed from the internet
In this case, the effect would not be to merely bring the arrest to light. Anyone who comes across the arrest now, is likely to come across the whole story, which is that it has been expunged and he was not guilty.
jjeaff··on Trump orders release of last JFK, RFK, King assassination files
Actually, he quickly confirmed to the reporter that he would release the files on all these assassinations, but when asked about the Epstein files, he equivocated and said that it was complicated and it might make "some people" look bad. Because, obviously, his name is going to be in those files. his name is already all over things that have been released.
jjeaff··on Android SMS Gateway Using MQTT
It is definitely still possible to receive class 0 sms, because I believe that is what you are getting in the US when you get an amber alert or other emergency warning. As far as I can tell, all US carriers restrict the sending of these to just themselves (or official gov sent through them). Otherwise you can imagine the abuse potential.
jjeaff··on How I Use Home Assistant in 2025
Do you live with other people? Kids? I love being able to quickly turn off all the lights in the house as we leave.
jjeaff··on NASA moves swiftly to end DEI programs, ask employees to "report" violations
the order also warns of "code words" for DEIA, lest someone try to sneak in some diversity or accessibility under the radar.
jjeaff··on TikTok says it is restoring service for U.S. users
I think they are doing it so the CCP doesn't have direct propaganda line into the home of most Americans. imagine how easy it would be to tip the algorithm scales to show, for example, stolen election conspiracy videos.
jjeaff··on TikTok says it is restoring service for U.S. users
they aren't all corrupt. and for those that are insider trading, few are beating the market.
jjeaff··on US will ban cancer-linked Red Dye No. 3 in cereal and other foods
RFK Jr has frequently and publicly claimed that the side effects and dangers of most all vaccines are worse than the diseases they prevent. There is no legitimate data that even suggests that is true. You can get into the minutia of potential dangers and health effects of vaccines all you want. But when you look at the actual outcomes, like with COVID, the public is far, far better off having taken them and RFK's fear mongering endangers the public health.
jjeaff··on Justin Trudeau promises to resign as PM
Almost all sectors in the US have seen job growth. Gov jobs have led in growth, but if you take out gov jobs, the US still sees job growth.
jjeaff··on United Airlines to launch Starlink wi-fi in spring 2025
More like 4-5 hrs vs 20 when you account for the fact that you have to be at the airport early to deal with security and boarding among other airport slowdowns.
jjeaff··on I am rich and have no idea what to do
I think that is most people's experience but it only works up to a point. you will get diminishing returns the more money you have until, in some cases, maybe negative returns.
jjeaff··on WHO implores China to share Covid origins data, five years on
umm ya, not congress, a select subcommittee, a committee that includes members like Marjorie Taylor Green. I think I'll get my investigative conclusions elsewhere.
jjeaff··on I built a platform for discovering and sharing Chrome extension collections
the alternative is leaving software eternally insecure as people will not update them. and of those that will, 99.99% (probably not an exaggeration) will not have the interest, time, or ability to review code changes before updating.
jjeaff··on Flu surges in Louisiana as health department barred from promoting flu shots
the raw data appears to agree that Louisiana is surging in cases. What is the issue? Just that they have assigned a cause when it may actually just be correlation?
jjeaff··on Nordstrom family to take company private
which one, I searched and found several iterations that are supposedly "new"
jjeaff··on Xerox to acquire Lexmark
I put that blurb into ChatGPT and asked it to translate the corporate speak into normal English:

Lexmark makes cloud-based printing and smart device technologies to help businesses achieve their goals faster. They use reliable technology and industry knowledge to help companies improve, turning information into useful insights, data into decisions, and analysis into action.

jjeaff··on New research suggests that Walmart makes the communities it operates in poorer
We had 2 grocery stores and I think Walmart put one of them out of business. However, the selection was much larger and it was a boost to local businesses because fewer people needed to travel to the next town over for supplies after Walmart came to town. It also employed significantly more people. I'm no fan of Walmart and their cut throat practices, but it hasn't been all bad for everyone.
jjeaff··on Why we use our own hardware
This is a common false dichotomy I see constantly. Cloud vs, buy and build your own hardware from scratch and colocate/build own datacenter.

Very few non-cloud users are buying their own hardware. You can simply rent dedicated hardware in a datacenter. For significantly cheaper than anything in the cloud. That being said, certain things like object storage, if you don't need very large amounts of data, are very handy and inexpensive from cloud services considering the redundancy and uptime they offer.

jjeaff··on A 10-Year Battery for AirTag
Ya, but those cases have tended to get a bit more traction because the primary purpose of firearms is to kill and there are lots of things that gun makers could do to make it more difficult to kill people with them (like built in locking mechanisms). A little different than say, a hammer, which is not meant as a weapon of death.
jjeaff··on A 10-Year Battery for AirTag
I have a dozen of those style temperature gauges all over my house. Mine are actually a slightly smaller, square version. You can use Home Assistant to read the Bluetooth temperature and humidity readings from them. They ended up costing maybe $3 each when buying several at a time. Battery tends to last a bit over a year.
