jjcon··on Altstore: Home for apps that push the boundaries of iOS
Because it’s not hosting the apps directly - it’s a sideloaded app manager really - I could create my own repo and send the source to people and they could browse it and download an app from my repo via AltStore. I think there are only 2 native apps in AltStore available, one is an emulator and another is a clipboard manager.
jjcon··on Depression, Anxiety, and Stress Spread Through Employee Mobility (2022)
> You appear to have no vested interest in someone who claims to have benefitted from therapy, and it’s very apparent you don’t see a therapist yourself.

I could replace therapy in that sentence with chiropractics or acupuncture and it would express an equally meaningless platitude.

> Suggesting that the recent decades of funding and research in the general psychology domain haven’t yielded good results is humorously ignorant.

And yet if we look at populations (as we do to benchmark real medicine) in much of the western world deaths from despair are up, depression and anxiety are up, population happiness is trending down. What a testament to those decades of research.

> From this perspective, you “having a problem” with it makes you look like a sociopath

This is a clear violation of HN rules, I suggest you take a look at them. What I have a problem with is people being duped into spending tons of money by charlatans. People in need spend money on tons of things they are convinced help them (supplements, psychics, acupuncture etc), that isn't evidence of their utility.

> softest of sciences, but labeling it as non-science would be ridiculous

It is about as scientific as chiropractics and acupuncture, full of anecdote and very little substance, you even provided some yourself. How can you possibly trust much of anything coming out of those disciplines when the majority of papers can't even be replicated?

> You’ve both labeled therapy as an ivory tower and implied therapists don’t have much education; that’s somewhat of a contradiction.

No contradiction - The problem isn't education obviously - its that some professions and disciplines are far more likely to produce pretentious ivory towers than others, that I have a problem with. Typically and ironically imo it is stronger in the soft sciences than the hard.

jjcon··on Non-occupational physical activity and risk of CV disease, cancer and mortality
The real science? Huh? How did you get that from the study? They specifically determined that even small amounts of exercise can dramatically reduce the mortality risk of multiple things including stroke, some cancers and heart disease.
jjcon··on Depression, Anxiety, and Stress Spread Through Employee Mobility (2022)
Because I think it is absurd and frankly ascientific how hard people cling to the idea that depression and anxiety are some biological or chemical body problem that is entirely outside their control. That it requires drugs or “special therapy techniques” to improve (Quite a useful narrative if your trying to sell those though)

If that were the case population level rates would be relatively stable over time and not vary dramatically by country but that is wildly not the case. Clearly lifestyle choices are a primary factor here but that is so taboo these days to even mention.

jjcon··on Depression, Anxiety, and Stress Spread Through Employee Mobility (2022)
If my surgeon had as much education as the average therapist does and surgery science had the replication crisis that therapy does I would call it exactly that: stabbing with medical ivory tower bs… thankfully that isn’t quite the case
jjcon··on Depression, Anxiety, and Stress Spread Through Employee Mobility (2022)
I mean it 100% is ultimately discussion no matter how much one wants to shroud it in academic ivory tower BS.
jjcon··on AirPods causing tinnitus?
Interesting same thing happened to me - a very strange sensation. I was using Galaxy Buds every day for work and have since stopped using any earbuds and the issue has pretty much gone away. Can’t say for sure it was the buds but… felt correlated enough that I’m wary to use them again.
jjcon··on Meta is cutting prices for its VR headsets
Keep in mind though that upon release the $300 entry level version was 64GB and now the entry level is 128GB at $400
jjcon··on Safety performance of the Waymo rider-only automated driving system [pdf]
Bias suggests incomplete data or poorly sampled or manipulated - this is none of that. These are raw statistics on the functionality of a system - if you want to introduce bias to weight certain miles more than others that’s on you and you can do any analysis you want but Tesla is reporting what they should be - the raw statistics.
jjcon··on Safety performance of the Waymo rider-only automated driving system [pdf]
None of that introduces bias - that is how the system is designed to work. My car has automatic cruise control that turns off in the rain. It does that FOR safety, not to boost any statistics.
jjcon··on Safety performance of the Waymo rider-only automated driving system [pdf]
What exactly is biased about the Tesla data? If anything it is far less biased imo cause it is over a massive sample of 9 billion autopilot miles as opposed to 1 million (more than 9000x the sample size)

No that would be bad too - everyone has a right to defense

jjcon··on Google Workspace increasing prices from April 11, 2023
Are you aware that for small groups and individuals workspace can still be free? I was upset they were going to charge me as well but they carved this out last minute - https://support.google.com/google-workspace-individual/answe...
jjcon··on Tesla recalls 360k vehicles, says full self-driving beta may cause crashes
FSD is an extension of the autopilot capability and the autopilot capability has proven extremely safe. As soon as there is statistically enough data they will release FSD numbers too but that means tens of millions of miles logged on roads since crashes are generally uncommon
jjcon··on Tesla recalls 360k vehicles, says full self-driving beta may cause crashes
Tesla publishes their safety data quarterly no need for your many assumptions and speculations - Teslas are already much safer than the average driver, especially when autopilot is on

jjcon··on Military shoots down another high-altitude object, over Lake Huron: officials
> this would be a FTL alien civ.

Why FTL? or any of the things you list. We are already looking to fly tiny probes past alien exoplanets with Breakthrough Starshot.

jjcon··on Project Sunroof

For how much longer? Stadia devs sure thought they were in for the long haul.

jjcon··on Bard and new AI features in Search
I would definitely agree - it is anti competitive behavior all around and will only make their antitrust woes worse in the coming years.
jjcon··on Bard and new AI features in Search
> but they've innovated (Bard is the subject in the Op and a pretty big AI innovation)

Bard has yet to be released or evaluated and they are already using marketing speak to let people know it won't be as good as ChatGPT.

>and maintained (Gmail, Docs, Chrome, Golang, Android)

I wouldn't call any of those maintained... stagnated at best with degradation around the edges all around. For each one of those there are 10 projects Google has killed or let wither on the vine over the past 5 years.

jjcon··on Bard and new AI features in Search
That may all be the case but then why has Google been failing to innovate and also maintain anything the past few years?

The past fews years we’ve seen Google products die and deteriorate. Search has gotten worse, they’ve killed dozens of products and services (even ones that they promised would be around for the long haul). GPhotos is no longer free (after putting most competitors out of business).

Google lack any institutional commitment and consistency to succeed at much these days. One only need to look at their recent past to see why everyone is skeptical. Maybe they will pull a rabbit from their hat but I’m not holding my breath.

That is all not to mention the pending real antitrust issues they are facing.

jjcon··on Morning exposure to deep red light improves declining eyesight
> I think we will have unintended consequence of everyone switching to led lights: the "wasted" infrared are actually useful for our body.

Not a chance - the amount of infrared and near infrared emitted from older style bulbs is a drop in the bucket compared to spending 1 minute outside (we’re talking 1000x more exposure outside).

jjcon··on Extracting training data from diffusion models
Is there any reason we shouldn’t view diffusion models as any other tool? I can infringe copyright with photoshop too… even accidentally. If I generate original work with either that seems like fair game.

I imagine with the right prompt one could coax out a copywritten image even if it hadn’t ever seen it before
