jj999··on The Death of Decentralized Email
UCE: Unitarian Church of Edmonton?
jj999··on Why not RSS?
RSS is head over heels. In an ideal world, websites would connect to users wanting the information and then a notification server installed on their devices would listen for incoming connection and display the wanted notifications. No tradeoff between latency and wasted bandwidth. Sadly the Internet isn't a peer-to-peer network anymore and dynamic IP, NAT and firewalls make this impossible.
jj999··on What's Next for Mozilla?
Pournelle's iron law of bureaucracy: In any bureaucracy, the people devoted to the benefit of the bureaucracy itself always get in control and those dedicated to the goals that the bureaucracy is supposed to accomplish have less and less influence, and sometimes are eliminated entirely.

Mozilla reached that point a while ago.

jj999··on Code of Ethics
We live in a very sad world if software projects now have official religion.
jj999··on A visual comparison of different national layouts on a computer keyboard (2019)
Right now any keyboard can use any layout transparently, minus the keycaps printing but fingers don't have eyes, so it doesn't really matter. Changing that is what would be really stupid.
jj999··on Microsoft Defender was flagging Tor browser as a trojan and removing it
Can there be legal liability with anti malware? By example, could flagging some software as malware expose you to being sued for libel?
jj999··on Critics Furious Microsoft Is Training AI by Sucking Up Water During Drought
it's only cheaper because the cost is externalized.
jj999··on The point of a game is not to win

jj999··on Hello, World Part One: Eliza (2022)
Not the Eliza of yore.
jj999··on US prison labor is cruel and pointless legalized slavery. I know first-hand
Few people care because they think it only happens to people unlike themselves.
jj999··on I rewired my brain in six weeks
I had brain trauma. No amount of new-age brain rewiring bullshit will unfuck me. This is /r/thankimcured material, not HN.
jj999··on The High Cost of Free Parking (2005)
Nearly half of parking lots' space a dedicated to move in and out. That space isn't needed with street parking because the street itself accomplish this function.

Parking lots are mostly used only half of the day and empty otherwise, because typically people drive their car around in a few different parking lots. Streets are useful all day long.

I'm unconvinced removing street parking would allow for smaller streets because that space is also used for bus stops and snow management in winter. Chance are street parking don't take place in itself but merely maximize usage of space that would be used up by the streets anyway.

I don't think we need private parking buildings to park our private cars when not in use, ie, most of the time. We need fewer, always in use, public cars to drive on our already public roads.

jj999··on The High Cost of Free Parking (2005)
In my building, there are 40 units... and 6 parking places in the basement. Most of the city is this way. Street side parking is the only way to go. TBH I prefer trees and grass over parking lots. I would not change it.
jj999··on Public restrooms are hard to find in America

To be understood I learned to use "blue cola" and "red cola".
jj999··on AOL pretends to be the internet
If AOL didn't exist, something else would have killed this fragile defense-less network.
jj999··on AOL pretends to be the internet
> Email, news, stocks, chats, IMs, web search, all just there front and center.

Yahoo tried to be that, too. Both are now mostly of historical interest.

jj999··on An algorithm that blew up Italy’s school system

jj999··on The End of the Googleverse
My father thought computers were tools for secretaries - on which he looked down - and could not fathom why on earth it was interesting to me. Then he babbled about the one Fortran class he had to take at university, how backward those punch cards were and how he basically learned nothing. When a computer finally entered the house, I was so exited. The first thing I did was installing a copy of a programming language I got from a teacher and I was very proud to show my father. My father literally threw a tantrum. I basically had anti-mentorship. For the longest time my dream was to be unlike my father.
jj999··on The End of the Googleverse
The issue I see with this is while there are myriads of blog hosting services, an equal number of vps providers if you want to have more control, and you can even host your blog yourself in your basement if you are so inclined, there is only one Youtube grabbing much of the money and leaving peanuts for the actual creators.
jj999··on Open-Source Washing
Say I use a software with AGPL as license on my server. If my server doesn't output anything AGPL-licensed to its clients, where is the distribution? If there is no distribution, how can the AGPL be enforced?
jj999··on Open-Source Washing
Except the developer of the code is not binded by the copyleft restriction. The developer can take his own code, modify it, and not release any modification.

The copyleft requirement restrict what others developers can do with the code. If they don't like it... well, who are they to use the code at all?

jj999··on I Can Eat Glass
Dignity and respect result from fear. Who would you fear most between the tourist and the insane?
