jj00··on Make. It. Simple. Linux Desktop Usability
Really interesting article. I've read the first two in the series and was eating it up. It's also nice to see more criticism about visual design on Linux desktops instead of worrying about the underpinnings.
jj00··on Make. It. Simple. Linux Desktop Usability
I agree with the global menu. At least Ubuntu (maybe more) gives you the option to switch between the two. I may be wrong, but I believe it's document-focused vs application-focused?

I think people who like the global menu tend to be single application users (window maximized). If you like to have a lot of smaller windows open on your desktop, then a global menu gets annoying. I also think today's larger screens (for desktop) is affecting the argument that user's find it easier to get to the menu if it's at the top of the screen.

jj00··on Popular Myths about C++, Part 1
Couldn't you say this for any language? As soon as you start applying it to larger projects things start to get more complicated. It's not the same problem per language, but each has their own issues.
jj00··on Show HN: My wife's email was hacked, I created an app to protect online accounts
A second password is just another form of a second factor (in 2-factor authorization)
jj00··on Show HN: My wife's email was hacked, I created an app to protect online accounts
I use it, but I have to admit I'm not much of a fan. All it has done is annoy me by forcing me to stop my flow and look-up a secondary field.

I think there should be a 3rd option of just having a second password. Better yet, add a few other options as well.

jj00··on With Assembly (YC W12), anyone can contribute to open-source and get paid
So what if the Open Source project doesn't make any money? Do they expect the project to pay percentages based on donations or something?
jj00··on Nokia N1 Android Tablet Revealed
Kind of weird to see a picture introducing the tablet and it has the letter "F" written on it.
jj00··on Gmail trick: multiplying your address
I'm sorry, but I've grown to hate this feature. I keep receiving emails from accounts I didn't sign up for, only to discover the person (with a similar name) used an email address like "senor.developez@gmail.com" or "senordevelopez" and the site itself defaults to "gmail.com". These are not off-the-wall websites, I've had long conversations with Netflix and a satellite TV service. You'd be surprised how many website do not authenticate the email account given.
jj00··on Ask HN: What is really wrong with the US economy, really?
I was commenting on the parent "..how far would you say that $110,000 has gotten you in Seattle?"

I've survived in Seattle making that amount, and making half that amount. Each time I've had to adjust my life in order to get what I wanted out of life.

jj00··on Ask HN: What is really wrong with the US economy, really?
I can't decide if he is commenting on his own situation or just added it in as part of a larger question about the economy.
jj00··on Ask HN: What is really wrong with the US economy, really?
I've done quite well in Seattle living within my means.
jj00··on How I Judge the Quality of Documentation
I've been evaluating using a wiki for some of our documentation, with DokuWiki. It uses plain-text markup files, but also allows for some collaboration between users. I can see where it wouldn't be so hot on the version front, but I'm hoping that we can come up with a procedure to keep those text files in a repository.
jj00··on Japanese Travel Tips for Visiting America
As an American, I would say most of us have a sympathetic ear, but don't know where best to place our efforts, so it shows up in tipping. However, I'm equally confused as to why there is no tipping in fast-food restaurants. The restaurant will even go as far as providing pants without pockets as to deter workers from receiving tips.
jj00··on Making Remote Work Work
I've been doing remote work for going on 8 years now. All solid advice, but I think the general theme I've gone by is to always be open to trying new ideas.

I've come full-circle on a number of things: I started with 4 clocks on my wall (laziness/batteries), tried to write my own desktop widget (client turned them off), then websites (too many tabs), and now an old iTouch (setup today).
