jitucon Ask HN: How did web development become so bizarrely complex?

People want to list everything on there resume, and that is the main problem. Most of the startup mvps and SMB softwares can easily be developed without any fancy tech, but developers will do it any way.

I remember a mid sized saas app of one client, built completely on plain vanilla php, css, javascript(jquery was used) and mysql database.

It was handling millions of request from thousands of paying clients without a hitch. Only fancy thing he did was an automatic backup system using custom script using replicated database. It just works.

jitucon Ask HN: Why are people saying short selling is immoral?

Short selling is not immoral but the planned manipulation of market with mass shorting perticular stock is. It can be tackled by imposing the maximum cap of 3-4 percent of a company value by single trader. So at least 20-30 traders are required to do such mass manipulation.

jitucon Ask HN: I'm building a Windows video editor, what are your pain points?

jitucon Ask HN: Quoting/invoicing stack for B2B SaaS

Hi, I am currently working on similar webapp, and would like to know your specific requirements, if overlap of both of our interests are good, you are invited to future beta version.

jitucon Ask HN: I'm going to launch a SaaS startup soon, what taxes am I liable to?

Do not worry too much, for now you do not even need gst registration.

Taxation is mostly based on your and your customer's location. If you are in India and customer is outside of india, you are exporting service you dont need to pay Gst, its exempt. If customer is in India and your yearly turnover is less thN 20Lac you still do not need Gst. Its complicated. Just build your Saas and get bootsteaped to 10L revenue, then visit any tax consultant.

In case of starting a company in USA use stripe atlas with virtual address, and get an agency who files taxes for you, consoder total yearly cost to $15k.

jitucon Ask HN: How long have you been on HN and have you learned a lot

Almost 10 years, once in a while it become boring and then I skip it for a week, otherwise great platform with intellectual people.

jitucon Ask HN: How much did it cost to develop Google Chrome?

That cannot be answered specifically as its distributed in many of small projects, my modest guess will be around 200 millions for development and total 400-500 millions for including all advertising and other marketing campaigns.[ie. Unaccountable price to place on google homepage for multiple years]

jitucon Ask HN: Why are there no open source 2d printers?

I would say,it is difficulty to access of technology. Inkjet Printers are either pizo or heat nozel based, both tech works at microlevel and are built with semiconductor based fabrication methods, which is mostly outof reach of enthusiasts.

jitucon Ask HN: Is there a browser extension for opening all links on HN in new tabs?

jitucon Microsoft Kills Windows 10's Automatic Driver Search

I really liked the feature, Once on my win7, I installed a cheap plug-n-play network card with realtech microcontroller. Assuming,it will work outof box. It didn't. Then I just used my mobile for usb tethering, quickly launch the automatic search from settings and thats all. It found the needed drivers automatically.

jitucon Ask HN: Why is windows 10 atrociously slow?

Use event viewer, go to windows system logs and look for errors marked with disk tag and bad sector message.

jitucon We own ɡooɡle.com now and we don't know what to do with it

It is really disappointing to see possible misuse of unicode, I believe browsers should team up and decide single measure like highliting unicode in address bar with bold red color or something like that with little tool tip which describe the case with caution.

jitucon Firefox 72.0

jitucon Sonos Sues Google: It wanted to sue Amazon but could only risk suing one

All such useless patents on concept and software functoonality encourage patent trolls.

jitucon Ask HN: What Technologies to Learn in 2020?

I second this. I believe in stable and mature codebase/system even if I may have to sacrifice some new tiny hyped techstack or trend.

If your product is stable and usable by use, they dont give a damn about its internals. It should good enough for test case. I use vanilla php and posgresql/mysql mostly. They are well matured, stable and have known issues. The website I made for a small college in 2008 is still live and working seamlessly, only changes I detected in last few years on it, were related to styling and formatting content.

jitucon Ask HN: Can or should I learn to code on a Windows computer?

Yes, that is completely fine. Unlike others I will advise you to start with statically typed language for start. No serious work just small tasks. Qbasic will be good start. Use for few weeks then jump to python or whatever you prefer.
