jimsojim··on Ask HN: What are you ways to learn new things?
By jumping right into them. Usually I try to spend straight 8-10 hours in the beginning to get hang of things + it gets you in a flow. The idea is to get over that first hump the uncomfortable part of starting something new and nuances that come with it. As you get used to few things you can reduce your sessions to 1-2 hours everyday or 2-3 every other day.
jimsojim··on What leads to success at math contests?
Not exactly HN material, but I found the strategies and ideas discussed in the post/comments are insightful and universally applicable.

jimsojim··on Ask HN: Should I intern at a Startup or a small Venture Firm?

jimsojim··on Study: CEO effect on firm performance could be mostly due to chance
In a way it would, if it's affecting the culture surely it would affect the company as a whole.
jimsojim··on Ask HN: Examples of sucessful one person startups?
Oculus
jimsojim··on Chinese University Tops MIT in Engineering Rankings
Also, more than that these rankings should weigh much more on the quality of education rather than the research outcome because a large mass of college students are misguided through these rankings. Is it the responsibility of these ranking systems or the students themselves to be more careful? I am not sure. Another way to tackle this is to have different kind of rankings- say, Research rankings, Teaching quality rankings- following more objective metrics rather than opinion based, as arethuza mentioned in his anecdote.
jimsojim··on Ask HN: Can you give me some advice on writing essays?
Can't stress this enough. Every success is a side-effect.
jimsojim··on Ask HN: How to read faster
I agree with your point on audiobooks. I have been doing it myself for a while too, but I always find myself wondering afterwards how this is not helping me to be a better reader.
jimsojim··on Ask HN: What is/are your favorite quote(s)?
"Things lead to their opposites"
jimsojim··on Ask HN: If you could live anywhere in the world, where would you live?
Well, if you're US passport holder you can stay upto 90 days without visa (business/travel). For the rest of the cases, you need to get one. If you get a proper job, employers will sponsor your visa.
jimsojim··on Ask HN: If you could build anything, what would you build?
I am curious how are you going to go about it?
jimsojim··on Ask HN: If you could live anywhere in the world, where would you live?
Hey denny, I can tell you South Korea is great. I am studying here at a Uni. In particular, I would recommend seoul (ofc), its a great place to be in. Although, traditionally the Koreans are known for their hardware, the market for software developers is increasing here at a very promising rate. Night life is awesome. Food is great, too. Although culturally I had some problems, but as you mentioned you've been to Japan and enjoyed their culture, you won't have any problem in adjusting here. And as you might expect Koreans (chicks) are very fond of foreigners haha (if it matters to you at all?).

Hit me up if you ever plan to visit here.

jimsojim··on Ask HN: Any movies that changed your life?
Kobe Bryant's Muse - its sort of a documentary defining the life of a basketball genius. It shows you the thought process of an expert. It makes you 'think'. And, I don't know if it makes any sense, but this documentary would feel quite 'realistic' in comparison to the other documentaries you might have seen under the same genre or theme. What I mean is, it is highly detailed about the vulnerabilities, insecurities and personal life of an expert (Kobe Bryant). Its relatable. These are just ordinary people with uncompromising determination to not to give up. Its just a beautiful journey to greatness shown by the man himself, Kobe Bryant, he talks you through the documentary. I bet if you watch it you will feel like a Black Mamba by the end of it.

PS. oh btw he will tell how he created this alter ego called 'Black Mamba' to deal with the mess he was going through. Its crazy. (NO SPOILERS :p)

jimsojim··on Ask HN: How do you get into the mood of productivity?
For productivity, I try to practice intense focus. I use small hacks/tips to keep me from getting distracted- such as, closing all the tabs. Chiefly, I just try to build this mental image of myself of being someone with exceptional focus. It helps me keep going (or just get started for the day). Basically, self-reinforcement. And, whenever I feel out of mood or jaded I just take a break, goof around, listen to minimalist electronic music (deadmau5 style^^). This helps me relax and refocus my brain on my stuff.

So tldr: Practice Focus and make sure you're goofing around/having fun when you're jaded/not in the mood. With practice you'd be able to have a good control over your mood and emotional state.
