jimsimmons··on Effect of LSD on reinforcement learning in humans (2022)
I meant to say that it being NP hard was the beginning of issues. Even if there was a polynomial time algorithm for it there are other can of worms to deal with.

But I was wrong ultimately

jimsimmons··on Tech Workers Aren’t as Rich as They Used to Be
Exactly how much was that new grad SWE was making at Block to pay off their student loans, save $500K, buy a car with cash and splurge on things at the same time

How is AI affecting software development in any meaningful way?

Are you a programmer or a PM/CEO looking for a technical cofounder type of person

jimsimmons··on Burnout
I’ve probably been burntout for a while. Haven’t had a vacation in a long time, haven’t been making the progress I want to be etc

At the same time chalking it all up to “burnout” seems dishonest. I’ve not been doing a good job —- I lack general discipline, have been on and off abusing drugs, been too alone and existential.

I don’t think an abrupt break is going to fix these things so I stay put, trying to fix underlying issues or make enough progress to be actually mindless on a vacation someday.

jimsimmons··on Effect of LSD on reinforcement learning in humans (2022)
Complete BS study. Increased exploration reduces reward learning rate. That’s the whole point of explore-exploit trade off which is at least NP hard.

The way they refer to RL dynamics as “RL rates” is also a give away that these people don’t understand RL. I’ll leave the evaluation of their cognitive science merit to people knowledgeable in that area

jimsimmons··on Googlers angry about CEO’s $226M pay after cuts in perks and 12,000 layoffs
You forget that Microsoft tried to hire Sundar to be CEO. Sundar has job opportunities. He was an engineer. He was the PM of Google chrome.

Satya and Tim weren’t being courted by anyone when they took their jobs.

jimsimmons··on Element is one of fourteen messaging apps blocked by Central Indian Government
You can find differences just as well you can find similarities. The Modi party btw is not some revolutionary departure from classic Indian politics either.

We are talking about grey stuff and you claim to see black and white things. There’s no way I or anyone else can convince you otherwise

Number of alleged patriots who can’t find the rationality in them to criticize electoral bonds is baffling

I also grew up in India. Parroting Indian history to justify the present is not how you move the country forward.

Republican Party was the party of Abraham Lincoln. Parties change through their life.

OpenAI is allegedly paying 5-20M for researchers. Shouldn’t CEO deserve 20x more?

What motivation will Sundar have if you pay him 200K?

jimsimmons··on Googlers angry about CEO’s $226M pay after cuts in perks and 12,000 layoffs
Hating capitalism is one thing. Being clueless how it works is childish.

200M over 3 years for the CEO of the most consequential tech company on the planet is peanuts. Pop artists make similar money scantily clad and squeezing autotune

jimsimmons··on Google “We have no moat, and neither does OpenAI”
Databases are another data point that fit this pattern. They’re not sexy and commercial players like Oracle have moat.

It’s an irregularity in their performance profile. Arithmetic is a known issue. How many such irregularities exist but are not measurable?
jimsimmons··on Study: ChatGPT outperforms physicians in quality, empathetic answers to patients
That’s sorta my point: diagnosing well studied diseases and providing precise treatment is different from speculating causes for rare diseases.

Who knows, OP could be a paint sniffer and that’s their root issue. Brainstorming these things requires creativity and even hallucination. But that’s not what doctors do.

jimsimmons··on We aren't close to creating a rapidly self-improving AI
GP is wrong.

Attention is all you need paper just proposed an AR model that didn’t have to be trained step by step. The scaling happened later in BERT and GPT and OpenAI’s scaling work

jimsimmons··on Study: ChatGPT outperforms physicians in quality, empathetic answers to patients
Brainstorming rare diseases and making diagnosis and providing treatment using medical science are different things.

If I ask GPT4 about some arcane math concept it’ll wax lyrical about how it has connections to 20 other areas of math. But it fails at simple arithmetic.

jimsimmons··on How to set your domain as your handle
Simple and fundamental. I’m behind this.

I don’t fully understand how decentralized these alt-twitters are. But to the extent they can replicate the basic functionality while not requiring mega cap profits it might be a win for us all.

I hope it’s not just a fad.

jimsimmons··on Forbes mocked as another '30 Under 30' honoree accused of fraud
Gandhi was a racist early on but throughout his life he continually grew as a person.

His non standard sex activities are known only because he himself shared all about his life with everyone. And he stopped when people pointed it out.

Gandhi by standards of his days was probably one of the least misogynistic leaders.

Lots of heroes aren’t worth worshipping. But let’s not throw the baby with the bath water.

The opportunity you gained was an opportunity that someone lost.

While you may have deserved it (and I sincerely think you do as you were forthcoming enough to write this) you have to admit such non meritocratic system with its perceived legitimacy is more harmful than valuable

Functional programming community likes this stuff. They go into the classical mathematicians’ trap of writing more and more general versions of something even though it’s not necessary.
