jimmygatz··on The Quant King, the Drug Hunter, and the Quest to Unlock New Cures
Hi Vapemaster and others,

Currently doing some research on the industry and curious if you could link to some of the "dead bodies"? Also curious if you know how Verseon's model (https://www.verseon.com/) stacks up versus some of the others mentioned? Obviously it might be hard to say since all their drugs are currently in the pre-clinical trial phase but would appreciate any info you might have.

Thanks in advance

I hear this argument a lot and I'm never really sure what is meant by "intrinsic value"? Why do you think bitcoins have zero intrinsic value but tulips and weimar republic bills do?

Bitcoin has many uses, but for the sake of argument let's take its often stated use of acting as digital gold. If gold is "intrinsically valuable" which I presume you think it is, then so is bitcoin. Gold is valuable because it is a good store of value due to its properties of being scarce, long-lasting, easily divisible, transportable, etc. Bitcoin is all these things too and in fact is a much better store of value than gold. I see no reason, other than "brand", why gold should be "intrinsically valuable" but bitcoin not. Btw, gold is a 3-6trillion dollar market depending on how you do the accounting (https://schiffgold.com/commentaries/just-how-big-is-the-gold...).

Appreciate the feedback!

Is there any example from history you think could be used as an analogy or do you think there's no way of comparing this to anything that's happened before? If so, how do you think about cryptocurrency valuation?

jimmygatz··on Ask HN: How to find a lead gen expert?
Also, I found this guy on Reddit and was impressed with his knowledge and results:

Here's his up-work profile: https://www.upwork.com/freelancers/~01d666ef2195a368dd

Any thoughts on this?

jimmygatz··on Ask HN: How to find a lead gen expert?
I agree and this is what we want whoever we hire to do as we currently don't have the skill-set/human resources to test out the different propositions.

Hi Wonsize,

Appreciate the response. Here are some answers:

1. Our scope is currently only the UK, although we are looking at other brands.

2. Meaningful scale for us would be between £100-500k revenue in first year and growing that 40-60% every year.

3. I don't know the answer to this.

4. Close competitors are companies like: https://charlottethomas.co.uk/, https://www.frette.com/.

I've put my e-mail in my profile. Thanks very much in advance for your time and for the consultation!

"I think this will be very successful. The roll of storytelling in business is becoming increasingly important, especially for consumer companies targeting millenials. See: http://blog.hubspot.com/opinion/why-storytelling-will-be-the...

Agreed. I think this combined with Snapchat advertising could be the first steps in the direction of changing advertising from the intrusive and unwanted interruption of your daily life to something people actually browse through in order to discover interesting stories and experiences.

However, I also think as social media has proliferated, the definition of the word "brand" has expanded as now more than ever, people are seen as "brands" - often with hundreds of thousands of followers (more than many actual brands and even media companies). As everyone becomes a brand, I believe increasingly the line between marketing and storytelling will be blurred and marketing will become deeply embedded into our culture. Product placement in movies, celebrity endorsement, "native" posts: all these are the first indicators of a culture in which everything is meant to sell something. Whether this is a good thing or not is up for discussion.

jimmygatz··on Ask HN: Best office/general computer skills course for my mum?
Cheers for the response. Unfortunately she's living in Equatorial Guinea so there's no good local courses - it has to be an online one. Any ideas?
jimmygatz··on Ask HN: $500k revenue business – Shopify vs. Custom website?
Apologies, couldn't find the thread I originally made and the 2nd one I put too little information. Thanks for that.

Can you give me an example of the kind of things that can't be done on Shopify that I might want to do?
jimmygatz··on [dead]
Any idea which ones these are?
jimmygatz··on Ask HN: What's one change you'd make to up conversions on our startup's website?
Cheers for your comment, I'll take a look at the presentation now and get back to you - looks interesting.

Thanks for the kind words too, we really appreciate it.

jimmygatz··on Ask HN: What's one change you'd make to up conversions on our startup's website?
Cheers for the heads-up, we'll fix that today.

Are you Portuguese yourself? We're definitely looking to expand internationally next year. Would be cool to get in touch.

jimmygatz··on Ask HN: What's one change you'd make to up conversions on our startup's website?
Thanks a lot for the response, I really appreciate it. PerfectAudience looks great, I've installed it and am reading about it now.

As for AB testing are there any good resources you can recommend to learn about it? We have no idea where to start with regards to what to test initially. I'm assuming "conversion funnel analysis" tools like Mixpanel should also guide our decision. Can you recommend any good resources to read about that also?

Sorry for all the questions and thanks again for your quick response.
