jimiray··on The vagus nerve orchestrates the mind-body connection
Polyvagal Theory is a huge part of how I teach yoga to veterans. There’s a great book by Dr Arielle Schwartz - Applied Polyvagal Theory in Yoga. It does work, it can’t cure PTS(D) but it does provide relief if only for an hours r of class.
jimiray··on The vagus nerve orchestrates the mind-body connection
Look up Polyvagal Theory by Stephen Porgess.

jimiray··on Apple Intelligence beta flagged a phishing email as "Priority"
This shouldn’t be that surprising, you’re using a piece of pre-beta software that is currently still in progress. Is it a bug, yeah. Is it newsworthy, not really. Just more, there’s a bug Company X’s product is shite.
jimiray··on Ask HN: What is the best thing you read in 2022?
Business: Team Topologies Non-Fiction: Be Love Now Fiction: The Lost Metal
jimiray··on Musk’s Twitter purchase was a leveraged buyout
you don't have to go that far back, Enron
jimiray··on Musk’s Twitter purchase was a leveraged buyout
This is such a great way to look at this. I'm sad that the employees will lose their jobs but the fact that so much money is being invested in this and going to Mars but we can't stop kids from being killed during school, feed kids lunch if they are starving, or make any real impact on climate change should awaken us to the fact that we've been increasingly played since the 60's.
jimiray··on Musk’s Twitter purchase was a leveraged buyout
you can't cut deep enough to cover $1B in interest paymets, maybe now people will figure out that Musk is the wealthiest man in the world by taking tax dollars as subsidies for all his businesses.
jimiray··on Am I an idiot for wanting a dumber phone?
For me, iOS 16 focus modes and a cellular Apple Watch is working for this. I've been able to pretty much just stop carrying my phone when I need to be connected but don't want the distractions. I have tried the Palm Phone in the past to reduce my use of smartphones and really liked it but did not like the lack of integration to iCloud and that you couldn't de-Googleify it.
jimiray··on Tell HN: Turned 44 today and I'm lost
I've been giving the advice for years that actually planning for what you'll do past retirement is as important than having all the money you'll need. I've seen my parents and in-laws struggle with mental health issues and boredom more than they have ran out of money. I'm refusing to do that, I found 3 things that I really love and working on turning those into third careers go keep myself busy. The 3 things are teaching yoga, personal training for people over 50, and becoming a divemaster.
jimiray··on The physiological effects of slow breathing in the healthy human
I dropped in here to say this. There's a book that just came out related to this called Breathe. I looks at breath from a cultural perspective also.
jimiray··on Small nuclear reactors: tiny NuScale reactor gets safety approval
I think picking a few accidents and saying that all nuclear is unsafe is such a disingenuous argument any more. All of those plants were based on extremely old designs and there have been tons of improvements. How about we focus on the "portable" nuclear power that is used by the US Navy for submarines and aircraft carriers safely.
jimiray··on After WeWork, SoftBank’s Startup Bookkeeping Draws Scrutiny
This is my favorite comment in this thread. We keep pouring billions into ride sharing, scooters, co-working to prop up crap business models that have no path to profitability to benefit a few.
jimiray··on Anki Shutting Down
My kids love the race tracks, Overdrive. I'll be looking to scoop up some stuff on clearance.
jimiray··on Headspace vs. Calm: A Meditation-App Battle That’s Anything but Zen
I've been curious about the Muse device. Do you still use your every practice?
jimiray··on Headspace vs. Calm: A Meditation-App Battle That’s Anything but Zen
I use it also and always recommend it, at worse you get a good timer for free. I probably do guided about 25% of the time mostly because I'm looking to learn a new meditation style. Also it has free yoga nidra courses, which to me is maybe more powerful than meditation. But no one talks about it the same.
jimiray··on Ask HN: What habits make a programmer great?
3 pieces of advice that have helped me.

1. RTFM, I was told this for about every question I had as a beginner, and had to prove that I at least attempted a solution. This was before Q&A sites like we have now. 2. Learn to create head space, be that meditation, yoga, going for a walk, whatever it is for you. Find it and use it to your advantage. 3. Expand your consciousness - Understand you are not the center of the universe, how every you choose to get there.

jimiray··on Software Developers after 40, 50 and 60 Who're Still Coding
49, write code every day. The whole SO thing mistifies me. I really think the survey skews, because "graybeards", don't waste time filling out surveys and they know how to RTFM to get answers.
jimiray··on Making Ocean Water Drinkable
Or we could just stop wasting water on Factory Agriculture of Animals.

jimiray··on Existential crisis at Railsconf
The websocket support in Phoenix is amazing. And it's not a huge jump to at least get an app up and running if you are a Ruby developer. Most of the really hard things from elixir/erlang have been tucked away nice and neat.
jimiray··on [Show NH] Weber-0.0.4 - rails like web framework for elixir released
has there been any work done to try and port the web framework benchmarks from TechEmpower over to weber? It would be interesting to see in the comparison now.
jimiray··on School is a prison and damaging our kids
Have you looked for any public Montessori schools? We have 3 Montessori charter schools in Denver.
jimiray··on School is a prison and damaging our kids
Another article, just basically saying everything Maria Montessori proved years ago, without actually mentioning Montessori. Education has advanced, we just have refused to adopt it. Just ask Larry Paige or Sergey Brin. I'm really happy that I'm in a profession where I can afford to send my kids to a Montessori school.
jimiray··on One long, intimate month with the Facebook API
Having built a Facebook application that uses FB video I can understand where he's coming from. The Graph API is a great concept but like so many things Facebook, only halfway executed. It always amazed me that there are so many differences between a video in FQL and a video in the Graph API. In the end I figured out that "begin ... rescue ... end" was my friend when dealing with the Facebook apis. And about any call I make to the OpenGraph API is now wrapped in them.
