I like the rate of time increase, that's a clever mechanic. it reminds me of lemmings!
jimbooonooo··on Tank Body Problem
this guy gets it! as I mentioned in another post, yes the trajectory line is instantaneous, and you need to rely on your internal electrical meat estimator to predict how that trajectory evolves.
jimbooonooo··on Tank Body Problem
correct, the trajectory indicator is instantaneous, requiring you to use your internal electrical meat estimator

this was a known feature actually, to allow me to rapidly gain XP and unlock additional weapons, although I agree it shouldn't have made it to the " production" version, whose phrase I am using very loosely here.

that said, I strongly agree about the AI slop sentiment, the lack of thinking on the Creator's part. I am a huge type II fun person who generated a lot of personal satisfaction by struggling through software, hardware, and mechanical development throughout my career, and it is pretty disappointing to see what looks like the loss of that due to AI. I have great concern for the long-term stability and growth of our civilization to be honest. it reminds me of hg well's journey to the center of the Earth talking about the morlocks who are maintaining machines that they no longer understand how to build, or for what purpose they actually exist..

diatribe aside, I do appreciate all the feedback and I acknowledge I sent this out early, and without comprehensive testing.

Great feedback, thank you! I am working on incorporating many of these fixes

yeah, a friend of mine and I were kind of laughing about how difficult the moon made things. on the opposite side of the pendulum, without the moon gravity, it would only take two or three terms to defeat the opponent, but I agree, toning down the moon a bit and coming up with future artillery path prediction might be more fun

Good catch, fix in progress. I am also working on adding a single player version and a leaderboard.

good catch, thank you. I will update so that you're limited to like one to two tank lengths per turn.

I grew up playing scorched Earth on Windows 3 just over a thousand years ago, and have always enjoyed that game. here is my implementation using a circular world with basic orbital dynamics added. in theory it works on mobile as well, but is best intended to be a PC browser game.

in the interest of transparency, this was generated on qwen 3.8: 27b, so you should consider the "my implementation" loose at best.

I'd love feedback on what works and what doesn't.

some weapons, such as the laser satellite and the peacock feather have additional actions that can be commanded after the initial launch. for instance the laser satellite will shoot a laser in whatever the current orientation is, and the peacock feather will split up into multiple feathers when pressing the space button or the fire button again.

enjoy!

The person can be sued for negligent, retaliatory, and otherwise crappy decision making.

you have to know the answer is 4 before learning to add 2 + 2. see how that sounds?
jimbooonooo··on LLMs as a Cognitive Virus
offloading thinking is a little/lottle bit different than writing to preserve your thoughts versus memorization. it's more analogous to skipping the writing, plugging your ears, and closing your eyes, while you wait for the answer to be presented before you.

except you are missing the one versus many argument here. sure we could make one human much smarter, could we make endless copies with the same intelligence? no

conversely, people can make the same decisions in the same-ish environment, with very different outcomes. it sounds like you discount the effect of luck in timing, or geography, or acquaintance, which are wildly different from just making intellectually robust decisions.

freedom loving Democratic socialist here, this stance is very St Thomas Aquinas of you. let people continue to do the things you did without pulling up the ladder behind you. it's just for a night or two, the animals will live.

how is expecting integrity a scam?
jimbooonooo··on Are 'mind children' the future of reproduction?
It seems like a possible progression for human beings, particularly as that technology comes online, and barriers (cost, environmental, societal instability) to having physical children increase. just as we see people today having relationships with llms or parasocial relationships, I don't view this as being much different. I think almost everybody has the desire to propagate.

I am faced with a variation of this right now. I have a relatively short-term prognosis, and am trying to document as many meaningful question and response multimedia as I can for my family, before I pass. interestingly, if I had the option to upload my mind or conscious, I don't think I would choose to, given the many ways that could turn sour. similarly, I don't think I would choose to have progeny that couldn't experience the sun on their face, and who were only black box models that I could speak to.

jimbooonooo··on Ask HN: Is using AI tooling for a PhD literature review dishonest?
I was diagnosed later in life with ADHD and struggled academically, but agree with this completely. Everybody faces difficulties in life, and ADHD doesn't justify constant exceptions. Your workplace will be far less accommodating, and you need to figure out how to adapt.

Using AI for literature review is a great tool, but I think the onus is on you to to both verify the output, AND disclose usage of said tool. Clearly describing your methodologies is it important skill for writing papers anyways.

jimbooonooo··on Electric motor scaling laws and inertia in robot actuators
There is no free lunch: using mechanical amplification results in the same problem as described above, and spring return means that your actuator has to push that much harder to overcome the spring.

Net is that a couple of figures of merit limit the performance of electromagnetic systems, and being sneaky won't let you exceed them.

They sure don't, but often insight into/alignment with the story and development process makes all the difference for which projects people choose to contribute to.
