jicea··on Show HN: Skybear.net – A managed platform automating Synthetic HTTP API testing
As a maintainer of Hurl, I've been really curious about this product (while not affiliated at all)! It has been an interesting journey because I've seen how you can build something like this: first you start with a solid first simple iteration (just an editor of web script files), then slowly you add features around it and expand: a very good documentation, "chron" scripts, email alerts etc...

I'm using Skybear.net at work today to do web sites monitoring (SSL certificates and health check), simple but very effective... impressive for a one man work! I can see a future where (a lot of) other file format are supported (à la Postman, Bruno etc...), but I'm happy that Hurl has been chosen for starting.

jicea··on SNES and Playstation Cubic Adpcm Interpolation
Just thank you for this link, didn't know this OST it's just incredible...
jicea··on Moving my website from Netlify to Caddy
I really loves Caddy, it has replaced nginx in my go-to HTTP server. It's really simple and powerfull, one nice example is how simple you can deploy applications with zero downtine [1].

On testing HTTP requests, I'd suggest Hurl [2], (I'm one of the maintainer). You will trade Ruby unit tests for a tailored HTTP text file format but I think it can shine for this kind of migration. Tests will be run in parallel, really fast.

For instance, test_site_is_up.rb will be replaced by a simple text file:

  GET https://alexwlchan.net
  HTTP 200
  [Asserts]
body contains "This website is a place to share stuff I find interesting or fun."

  GET https://alexwlchan.net/articles/
  HTTP 200
  [Asserts]
  body contains "Articles"

  # etc...
Testing alternate domains (test_alternate_domains.rb) could be:

  GET http://alexwlchan.net
  HTTP 308
  Location: https://alexwlchan.net/

  GET http://alexwlchan.net/contact/
  HTTP 301
  Location https://alexwlchan.net/

  # etc...

Give it a try!

jicea··on Open source maintainers underpaid, swamped by security, and going gray
Absolutely! I'm the maintainer of a small Open Source project [1] and this phrase makes me tickle.

I totally get it that a maintainer doesn't want to merge some code, even if it's totally working. Is the new feature a niche case, or has if a wide audience? Is it aligned with the project goal/philosophy? Will it be easy to maintain/evolve/debug? Does it add unnecessary/unwanted dependencies? At the end of the day, the maintainer will be the person that have to work/support with this code.

Please keep in mind that if you've spent an hour on a project, maintainers have have certainly spent hundreds if not thousands more time on it.

jicea··on Building the same app using various web frameworks
I'm the maintainer of an open Source CLI. The documentation site [1] is a static HTML site generated by Jekyll, from a bunch of Markdown files. Is there advices for LLM ready single page doc?

- should I just aggregate the Markdown files and that's all?

- should I provide a HTML standalone page

- is there any pointer on this issue?

Thanks!

jicea··on Hurl 5.0.0, the Parallel Edition
Hi, maintainer of Hurl here. We really want to improve the support of Hurl in various editor/IDE (IntelliJ / vim / VSCode etc...). It's a huge work but necessary!
jicea··on Notes on Buttondown.com
> We ended up using hurl as a test harness around HAProxy, something we probably should have done three years ago.

As maintainer of Hurl [1], this makes me happy!

jicea··on Guide to Error Handling in Rust
> Surprisingly, the type wrapped by std::result::Result::Err doesn't need an Error bound:

None of the errors types I create implements the trait Error. I'm just using simple enums with various variants and that's sufficient for me. The crates that I develop are mostly binary crate [1] so implementing the trait Error is maybe more prevalent in libraries crate. Reading the article, it feels a little overkill to me. I like the simple, straightforward approach (the one that you learn in the Book). I don't use anyhow also, I actively try to limit the dependencies I'm using.

jicea··on Libcurl is 24 years old
I maintain an open source HTTP client [1] which uses libcurl under the hood. Super reliable, simple to use, full-featured (HTTP/3, IPv6...): I'm super happy that we choose libcurl (through some Rust bindings)!

Thanks Daniel and all the contributors for this!

jicea··on How is France dodging the global obesity trend?
Yes it's not the salad as remplacement for the burger, it's more green salad without any meat that replaces french fries in your burger menu.
jicea··on How is France dodging the global obesity trend?
You can also take a green salad in the standard McDonald's menus instead of french fries, and I think this is specific to French McDonald's.
jicea··on What happened to Captura? OSS maintainer burnout (2023)
Years ago, I made a significant piece of money with a game on the Windows Mobile app store. I'm French and, at that time, was unable to get the right documents to receive my money on my bank account. It was as if the Microsoft store was only conceived for US citizens. I kept trying to contact anyone at Microsoft, using various communication channels but received 0 response and the money kept growing.

Fortunately, I won a Microsoft chalenge about apps development. I had the opportunity to go to Seattle and assist to the next Microsoft mobile OS (Windows Phone). At the presentation, I took the opportunity, during a coffee break, to explain my situation to the presenter. He was so sorry and gave me an operational contact. Days later everything was resolved and I finally received my money.

Lesson learned: Microsoft is a huge bureaucracy but you can manage to find real involved and competent people. As a French person, I know how to deal with bureaucracy: avoid it if you can. I switched to other development platform and never go back to Microsoft.

jicea··on MSX Elite
Thank you for these links!
jicea··on MSX Elite
The NES version is my favorite 8-bits game. Such mind blowing to have 3D graphics on this console. The manual referred to rock hermit, I spent many hours searching for them, without encountering any... I remembered discovering by accident how to escape hyperdrive and be assaulted by Thargoids. What a game!

Document source files is on GitHub [1].

jicea··on Microsoft closes several large Bethesda affiliated game studios
Housemarque hadn't released any AAA games before launching Returnal on PS5, which is, in my opinion, still one of the best games on this platform. Smaller studios can innovate on gameplay and stories before creating a hit.

Another example is FromSoftware. They kept iterating on their games going from KingFields to Demon Souls, Dark Souls, etc...You can't have Elden Ring without all this earned experience.

jicea··on High Definition CSS Color Guide
I like that the demo slider is directly from one of Bartosk Ciechanowski's always excellent article [1].

He's really a reference in interactive visualization. There's a link to his article on color spaces labeled "Try it for yourself", but I would prefer a direct and clearer textual attribution to him.

jicea··on Bruno: Fast and Git-friendly open-source API client (Postman alternative)
You're welcome (and thanks for the credits on https://naprun.dev!!)
jicea··on Bruno: Fast and Git-friendly open-source API client (Postman alternative)
You reused a lot of "concepts" like captures, queries, filters, predicates etc... I take it as a compliment, there is a place for everybody (I'm one of the Hurl maintainers)
jicea··on Bruno: Fast and Git-friendly open-source API client (Postman alternative)
Compared to curl, you can:

- chain requests passing data from a request to another,

- add tests on every responses: body, headers, certificates, etc... You can use JSONPath or XPath for example,

- there is some sugar syntax to construct request bodies (GraphQL body is annoying with curl, JSON etc...),

- there is some sugar syntax for retrying requests on asserts, delaying requests etc..

Under the hood, Hurl uses libcurl so a lot of curl's options are exposed through Hurl (and we benefit of a lot of curl features like HTTP/3, IPV4/IPV6 etc... and speed and reliability of course!).

(I'm one of the maintainers)

Hi maintainer of Hurl [1] here! Your comment makes my day, thanks!!

jicea··on Bruno: Fast and Git-friendly open-source API client (Postman alternative)
Shameless plug for Hurl [1]: it's a cli tool, based on plain text and curl to run and test HTTP requests. It's just libcurl + the possibility to chain and test response. You may like it! (I'm one of the maintainers)

jicea··on Prompt 3
Pricing is very interesting:

- Subscription $19.99 USD/year, cancel anytime

- One-time purchase for $99.99 USD

With a 7-days free trial, iOS and macOS apps, I find it fair and for everybody's taste!

jicea··on --libcurl
Shameless promotion: Hurl [1] is an Open Source cli using libcurl to run to test HTTP requests with plain text!

We use libcurl for the super reliability and top features (HTTP/3 for instance) and we've added little features like:

- requests chaining,

- capturing and passing data from a response to another request,

- response tests (JSONPath, XPath, etc...)

There is nice syntax sugar for requesting REST/SOAP/GraphQL APIs but, at the core, it's just libcurl! Using verbose option, you can grep the curl commands for instance. (I'm one of the maintainers)

jicea··on Rust – Faster compilation with the parallel front-end in nightly
In grapl/src/rust:

- cloc shows that there are ~70,000 lines of Rust

- with `cargo tree`, I see that the project depends on ~600 crates

In my toy project:

- cloc shows that there are ~40,000 lines of Rust

- with `cargo tree`, I see ~40 crates

I don't know the scope of grapl, but 600 (transitives) crates seems a lot to me. Maybe that explains why this particular build is so long. I haven't managed to build it (seems to have prerequisites on proto buffer stuff).

jicea··on Rust – Faster compilation with the parallel front-end in nightly
I really disagree here: I'm a maintainer of a medium sized open source Rust project [1] and I'm always surprised by Rust compilation time speed (local). On a MacBook Pro, it's a matter of seconds, in debug. Release compilation and CI/CD are slower, but, since the beginning of my Rust journey (2 years ago), Rust compilation seems just very fa...

To balance / explain my point:

- my day work is Java / Kotlin with Gradle. Now, we can talk about glacial compilation times

- on my open source Rust project, we try to minimise dependencies, don't use macros (apart derive[Debug, Clone] etc...), and have a very moderate generics usage

If you take the time to `cargo build` my project, I'll be happy to have feedbacks on compilation times

jicea··on Preview of CLion Nova, which uses the ReSharper C++/Rider C++ language engine
I really like developing Rust with CLion: when I'm using C libs and Rust bindings, I can debug it seamlessly and efficiently. If RustRover [1], the dedicated JetBrains IDE for Rust, doesn't support C/C++, It will be a showstopper for switching.

jicea··on HTTPie Desktop: cross-platform API testing client for humans
Hi nikeee glad to see you here!

As maintainer of Hurl, I'm very happy that HTTP clients is the new place to be! I'm not able to write a text editor, but a tool relying almost entirely on curl is in my reach...

jicea··on Tell HN: Postman update removes all your stuff if you refuse to create account
You can give a try to Hurl [1], a CLI open source tool, based on plain text and curl. It allows you to run and test Rest/SOAP/GraphQL APIs (I'm one of the maintainer).

There is no GUI, so Hurl is not a drop-in Postman replacement, but it has nice features: it can be easily integrated in CI/CD, it's fast and it's powered by curl!

A detail: Hurl is given to the community by Orange, a French telco. Orange is not in the dev business, so it should remain free, open source, analytics free for a long time. In any case, you can easily convert Hurl files to JSON [2] in order to switch to another tool or not being trapped in a single provider...

jicea··on Insomnia REST client now requires an account
Thanks for mentioning Hurl [1] (maintainer here!)

If you're looking for a tool with a nice UI, Hurl might not be the ideal choice. We're focusing our tool on CLI usage and CI/CD integration.

On the other side, Hurl is a pure Open Source tool, we're not VC backed. The tool is given to the community by a big French telco, Orange, which use it and has no intention to be in the software business. In a word, there is less chance for Hurl to fell into Postman or Insomnia fate...
