jhwang5··on The Rise of North Korea's Hacking Army
It's actually possible that the NK hackers are taking blame on behalf of CCP. Would take too long to explain fully. Just imagine NK as a "blame proxy" for CCP when it comes to the edgiest operations
jhwang5··on The Atlantic lays off almost 20% of staff
B/c billionaires got everything, they also want to feel good about themselves & righteous too. Thus you see a lot of virtual signaling
jhwang5··on The Great Asshole Fallacy
In this thread. Bunch of people who haven't won anything criticizing the methods of the greatest winner.
jhwang5··on How should LA urbanize? Look to Seoul
Downvotes are probably due to jealousy / discomfort
jhwang5··on Think America’s divided now? Try the 1970s
.
jhwang5··on U.S. field hospitals stand down, most without treating any Covid-19 patients
exactly. they panic hired a bunch of contractors with no real operating plan on how to utilize them, and now taxpayers are footing the bill for the contracting company CEO's third mansion.
jhwang5··on U.S. field hospitals stand down, most without treating any Covid-19 patients
The question is - was the egregious price the contractors charged a good price? I have the right to care about that as a tax payer
jhwang5··on We Chat, They Watch
In the U.S., we send them to private prisons instead and make them do free labor.
jhwang5··on People and jobs? Or wealth? The government has to decide which to prioritise
What is this guy smoking? He presents a false dichotomy of saving "labor" vs "assets". Look, if assets depreciate, it affects balance sheets of everyone, including corporates, and induce a balance sheet recession which reduces reinvestment into the economy. Everyone's fked then, too. It's all connected.
jhwang5··on Uber CEO Says Layoff Decision to Be Announced Within Two Weeks
Having managed and laid off people (unfortunately), I would guess middle managers have already been given a number X to cut already, and they are spending some sleepless nights already trying to figure out exactly what to say (unless they are too chicken and have HR personel do the firing)
jhwang5··on Uber CEO Says Layoff Decision to Be Announced Within Two Weeks
Yeah, but you always "kinda" know where you stand with your boss.
jhwang5··on Uber CEO Says Layoff Decision to Be Announced Within Two Weeks
The best way to know if you're getting fired:

If you don't have a "cue" from your boss that you are safe PRIOR to the layoff, then you are pretty much on the chopping block.

In other words, if you don't know who the sucker is, you are the sucker.

jhwang5··on Bye, Amazon
He worked at AWS, not retail
jhwang5··on Bye, Amazon
By definition, so are the incidents that are reported by NYTimes. Amazon has hundreds of fulfillment centers around the world, and it's possible that the sufferings of some workers are exceptions, not the norm.
jhwang5··on Is the Cloud Recession-Proof?
I think growth of cloud business - net / net - will decrease in 2020.

1) The basket of customers who may do a big Cloud migration may shy away from big CAPEX projects (unless it's a very low hanging fruit that saves money).

2) It's not completely obvious whether cloud saves money, it really depends on the customer case by case.

3) The big sales pitch for cloud migration was so it can add features faster. Adding new features isn't on top of people's minds right now

4) Existing cloud customer will find ways to optimize their cloud spend.

jhwang5··on Is the Cloud Recession-Proof?
You will get that answer in Amazon, Google, and Microsoft's Q2 earnings. I can't wait myself.
jhwang5··on The inevitable has happened
"Over the past few months, we have experienced the mainstreaming of technology-enabled behavior previously thought of as being on the fringe. Shopping for groceries online and having them delivered, for example, was something of coastal luxury."

Food / grocery delivery is still to expensive to be the "norm", especially for the middle class.

"It is not as if they had a choice. COVID-19 has exposed one harsh truth: digital channels are more flexible and faster to adapt to change than physical channels."

Yes. That being said, physical stores (after a CMBS crash) may get massively underpriced coming out of this recession.

jhwang5··on Why Zoom Chose Oracle
How so? Different in what sense?
jhwang5··on Why Zoom Chose Oracle
Are we giving FB a pass for stealing competitor ideas? IG stories (from Snap), FB Room - Zoom Clone, etc.
jhwang5··on Awful Amazon Interview Experince
Ok, so you got rejected and didn't receive meaningful feedback, so you are venting on HN.
jhwang5··on Facebook Reports First Quarter 2020 Results
Quarantine only reinforced people's zombie-browsing (FB, IG) habits, since there's nothing else to do.
jhwang5··on Boeing, expecting a long slump, will cut 16k jobs
Boeing was negotiating with gov to drop the equity requirement - does anyone know what the upshot was? They also did take money from other programs targeted at Airline industry, though I don't know exactly how much.
jhwang5··on Boeing, expecting a long slump, will cut 16k jobs
The Boeing bailout was sold as a measure to keep jobs, then of course they turn around and do this.
jhwang5··on Japan’s Coronavirus Cases Fall Sharply Without Compulsory Measures
More importantly, do they want the masses to get back to work, now that funds got their chance to buy the dip, or no?
jhwang5··on Show HN: AI Generated SEO Articles
Counter-take. Since the SEO content garbage is currently spewed by hordes of content writers making little money, a successful AI can help them find a higher calling.
jhwang5··on The San Francisco Bay Area shelter-in-place order is being extended through May
Food for thought - if say 70% of cases are asymptomatic or mild (and therefore they don't get tested), then NYC's CFR already drops to 0.2% for the bucket you are referring to.
jhwang5··on Global coronavirus death toll could be 60% higher than reported
They have the charts in the article
jhwang5··on Millions of credit-card customers can’t pay their bills
I think discipline != penny pinching
jhwang5··on Millions of credit-card customers can’t pay their bills
These are aggregate metrics - in a country like the US that's in top 5 in terms of income gini-coefficient, I suspect medians will paint a very different picture.
jhwang5··on Millions of credit-card customers can’t pay their bills
Now try 1) plotting that against household debt, 2) and against other countries.
