jhurliman··on Parcel – A fast, zero configuration web application bundler
I think you may be confusing npm with something else? npm is a package manager, and it does run as a command line tool. Similar to how apt-get is the command-line frontend for a package ecosystem. npm also includes npx, which allows you to directly run any command line utility in the npm ecosystem without installing the package first.

Try running `npx ember-cli` directly in your terminal.

jhurliman··on Tesla has created a customized insurance package
I just got a quote (Model X, California) that is 42% higher than my current monthly premium through USAA :-/.
jhurliman··on Introducing Dialogflow, the New Name for API.AI by Google
The Alexa Skills Kit API relies heavily on an “intents + slots” system where you request specific nouns/verbs from the user such as a first nam or a date and the webhook only sees that specific information. This makes it difficult to wire up third party NLP systems, although there are hacks out there[0].

jhurliman··on Fast ECMAScript Parser – Alternative to Acorn / Esprima
One reason to use this workflow (not sure if it applies here) is to do tree shaking on the ES2015 output.

jhurliman··on Songbird: Spatial Audio Encoding on the Web
This is great to see! I have a side project to port the old Peep Network Auralizer to a web based project[1] and the code already has the concept of mono sounds originating at different points in a 3D space, so this should be relatively straightforward to integrate. I was aiming for Android/iPhone compatibility though; is there any multichannel audio support on mobile yet or would I need a fallback?

jhurliman··on The Largest Virtual Universe Ever Simulated
Related to this, Second Life has a concept of time dilation which is the ratio of current simulator frame rate to ideal frame rate (30fps IIRC). As more avatars, scripts, and physically simulated objects were put in a simulator the time dilation increased.
jhurliman··on Show HN: Get Paid to Build Your Next Side Project
My anecdote: I picked up a £20 note on the sidewalk in London two weeks ago.
jhurliman··on Enabling Continual Learning in Neural Networks
Research engineers turn theory, pseudocode, or smaller proof of concepts into a more fleshed out implementation. Once a research project exceeds a few thousand lines of code it becomes useful to have dedicated engineers doing architectural design, owning unit testing / backtesting frameworks, code quality control, etc.

jhurliman··on On the Emotion of Users in App Review
- I assume sentiment and star ratings are strongly correlated, but are there cases where these deviate?

- Is there any seasonality to review volume and/or sentiment (day of week, time of month/year/etc) that holds across many apps?

- Are there interesting differences in sentiment mean+variance by app category? For example, are utility app reviews more polarized than games?

jhurliman··on Ask HN: Do you have a side project you want to sell? (2016)
My iOS non-photorealistic filtering app: https://appsto.re/nz/uj0Dab.i

The sketch and comic book photos have a lot of interesting depth to them, but I never marketed the app or went any further with the execution.

jhurliman··on Updating classic workplace sabotage techniques
I had to check and see if you work(ed) at my previous company.
jhurliman··on Brilliance – f.lux for Philips Hue bulbs
I'm working on a video, just requires a bit of setup since a time lapse video is needed to capture what is happening with the app. The different times of day and weather influence are all fairly mild since the app is designed to be used every day.
jhurliman··on Brilliance – f.lux for Philips Hue bulbs
Coming in the first update, I just need to purchase some LIFX bulbs for testing first!
jhurliman··on Ben “bushing” Byer has passed away
Ben was also instrumental in the Wii hacks, played a role in several iOS jailbreaks, and helped me reverse engineer the Second Life protocol.
jhurliman··on Ben “bushing” Byer has passed away
Ben was the first person I met in the flesh in the Bay Area (we knew each other beforehand via efnet and a mutual open source project). He was the most brilliant reverse engineer / security researcher I've ever met, on a completely different level. He was also the connecting fabric between a diaspora of friends spread across the Bay Area and the web.

Ben, you will be missed.

jhurliman··on Amazon Kinesis Firehose – Simple and Scalable Data Ingestion
The only complication with this approach right now is that Lambda scripts can't communicate with anything inside a VPC (such as most Redshift instances). I imagine they will fix this issue in the future though.

jhurliman··on Goodbye node-forever, Hello PM2
This is great. I just submitted a pull request to node-usage to add OSX support, so hopefully we'll be able to run PM2 in both production and local development soon.

jhurliman··on Should students profit off my classes?
Order of operations. -4^2 is equivalent to -(4^2).
jhurliman··on The Zuckerberg Tax
This article must be some form of NYTimes trollbait. Catastrophic unintended consequences aside, it would be hilariously ironic to use Enron's accounting system in a misguided attempt at tax reform (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Enron_scandal#Mark-to-market_ac...).
