jhoechtl··on Let's make quality the norm again
Easy: Items must work without internet connection so they cannot be updated online.
jhoechtl··on Julia 1.13 highlights
As you mentioned 38 languages, chances are high that these languages are not all coming from a scientific background, where 1 index based adressing of items is the norm. What is your take in respect to Julia, which is also one offset based?
jhoechtl··on How an MIT research project became the Julia programming language
> Julia uses 1-based indexing.

That rules it out to become a successor to Python. It sounds reasonable until you start interacting with other libraries.

I do know the attemp to justify it for Lua and I don't buy it.

I would like to see small appliances inbuilt batteries (mostly Li-Ion based) be prohibted. It contributes to device obsolescence and is a security risk --> burning waste dumps.
jhoechtl··on Early Humans Likely Ate Carbs and Sugary Foods
Today we know sugar was a key ingredient for brain development in humans, not just proteins because of eating meat.

jhoechtl··on A particle made of force: physicists say they've found mysterious 'glueball'
It's foundational science. The US scuence system calls for utility and time to merket. In such a system there is little space for gluons.
jhoechtl··on US strikes $1.2B deal to pay German firm to halt offshore wind projects
The sweet spot is representative democracy with a tendency of socialism, to mildly distribute welath and assure social coherence. A voting system which results in a division of force, representing the voters will.

The current US administration calls such things comunism.

jhoechtl··on Could psilocybin be the key to treating anorexia?
We hear a lot of psilocybine lately, it cures altsheimer, people in coma awake miraculously. As long as we do not understand the workings, it reminds me of the days when radium or other nuclear substances were the cure for everything.
jhoechtl··on Una GPS smart watch – Repairable, USB-C charging, developer-friendly
Is there any good watch outside doing GPS for position and time, minus all the body survzeilance things?
jhoechtl··on Una GPS smart watch – Repairable, USB-C charging, developer-friendly
So it will never last a lifetime.
jhoechtl··on The Usefulness of Useless Knowledge (1939) [pdf]
As a mostly recluse myself, I made.my.peace with world. The world is led by men who think the faster we arrive at utility the faster money can be made. True. The falacy on that way is to assume that people like Maxwell, Oersted and many more mentioned in the article would prefer working in teams which is shoveled these days into the fabric of academic collaboration. It's not. Genius people prefer working alone and their discoveries did and do happen while they are left alone. Out society will lose and already lost a lot with the current requirements of collaborarion in academic work. Venture capital provided by prolific no-knowers is also detromental.
jhoechtl··on 98.css
I do not understand efforts like these. It's not that 98 Windows UI design has been the paramount of UX. Today's technology bloat and layer upon layer of abastractions caused a total bloat.

Understanding what is required to make a good UX site, and idenifying the minimum neccessary technological components is it.

jhoechtl··on The labor share of income in the US is at its lowest post-war level
This is a good point I haven't considered in the past and worth to take into the overall discussion.

In this regard I do find DuckDB amazing.
jhoechtl··on Long Wave radio era set to end with switch-off
Everyone is talking about the massive power of Radio 4 - it wasn't. Radio poland or algeria have much stronger LW broadcast.

jhoechtl··on Memory decline after menopause linked to loss of estrogen production in brain

jhoechtl··on Ubuntu 26.04
I find it hilarious how much religion is put into Gnome vs. KDE in this case. I did use both. I honestly have no strong favourite. After that many years of Linux desktop environment DE hopping I came to the conslusion that the DE should get out of your way and allow you to focus on your work.

Both Gnome and KDE support that. Actually Gnome a tad better as it gives you less knobs to turn an waste your time. Accept the defaults and if defaults are bad move somewhere else.

jhoechtl··on Changes to GitHub Copilot individual plans
Ladies and gentlemen, last round, free lunch is over.
jhoechtl··on XOR'ing a register with itself is the idiom for zeroing it out. Why not sub?
Back in the stone ages XOR ing was just 1 byte of opcode. Habbits stick. In effect XORing is no longer faster since a long time.
jhoechtl··on The quiet disappearance of the free-range childhood
A delicate topic with many perspectives. Our small families make it possible to devote so much energy to our kids. However autonomy is all so important to become a strong adult later. We deliberately need let go more than we do now.
