jhlgkhkhil··on Most Electronics Being Banned on Certain US-Bound Flights
In one of the flash chips? Or a hardware module?
jhlgkhkhil··on Insect: a fast, repl-style scientific calculator
From a scientific calculator I would definitely expect complex numbers.
jhlgkhkhil··on Comprehensive and biased comparison of OpenBSD and FreeBSD [pdf]
> You may or may not be aware, but FreeBSD runs your movies on Netflix, your games on PlayStation 4 and Nitendo Switch

Do Netflix, Nintendo and Sony contribute financially to the FreeBSD project? They are the ones making money off the project after all.

jhlgkhkhil··on Vibrator Maker to Pay Millions Over Claims It Secretly Tracked Use
Yes is does. If you vouch for comments that get flagkilled your flagging/vouching rights get automatically removed quite quickly.
jhlgkhkhil··on Vibrator Maker to Pay Millions Over Claims It Secretly Tracked Use
Same happened to me on another account. Long standing account with karma over 1000. One little spat and the account got rate limited and its votes did nothing - its flagging rights remained though for some weird reason... Since then I've been on throwaways.
jhlgkhkhil··on New ways to foot the hefty bill for making old ships less polluting
Ships can burn a wide range of fuels. The cost per litre can vary enormously. The amount they burn per unit distance depends upon their speed. This means that whilst whomever is paying will have good control upon overall fuel price this may not map to fuel volume in as simple a way as the cost of fuel for a diesel truck would.
jhlgkhkhil··on The end-to-end refresh of our server hardware fleet
Agreed. What I question is whether a lot of the complexity is actually needed for a lot of the systems being deployed? For example people are building docker clusters with job based distributed systems for boutique B2B SAAS apps with a few 1,000 users. Is the complexity needed? And how much complexity needs to be added to manage the complexity?
jhlgkhkhil··on Secure Computing for Journalists
I have repeatedly asked you to actually provide some citations for your claims. Please do so.
jhlgkhkhil··on Secure Computing for Journalists
I've been on here for years. I just don't tend to remember my passwords very well :).

I am very familiar with the OPs posts. I do not want this to become personal. If you re-read this thread (and others in this discussion you might notice that.)

jhlgkhkhil··on Secure Computing for Journalists
Please provide some references to back up any of your claims in this or other threads. By references I mean articles by other reputable researchers (preferably peer reviewed). Blog posts and summaries of your chat logs do not count. As you are a researcher this will not be hard (a quick search in your reference manager software should suffice) - or a link to one of your articles from which I can follow the citations.
jhlgkhkhil··on Secure Computing for Journalists
Wow just wow.
jhlgkhkhil··on Secure Computing for Journalists
Interesting please tell me more.
jhlgkhkhil··on Secure Computing for Journalists
So we should just trust you?
jhlgkhkhil··on Secure Computing for Journalists
The difference is that the dumb phone can be thrown away and replaced - not many people can afford to use iphones as burners..
jhlgkhkhil··on Secure Computing for Journalists
It means on what basis can you stand and say to people who's lives may be at risk that you trust apple's press releases?

Please don't respond with the strawman you keep using of Iphone vs. Android. I am not arguing that Android is more secure. I am saying that taking either to meet an at risk source is bad. Your advice on this forum will contribute to journalists feeling comfortable doing this.

jhlgkhkhil··on Secure Computing for Journalists
OK this advice is dangerous. The reason Tor Browser exists is because configuring Tor for safe use is difficult...

Please keep the personal attacks away from this forum. There is no place for them here.

EDIT > "I'm sorry, but comments the one upthread I'm replying to are indistinguishable from trolling to me. I know that's a bit of an aggro thing to say."

If that not a personal attack I don't know what it is.

Oh and would you have time to address any of my questions? (In terms other than ios vs. android?)

jhlgkhkhil··on Secure Computing for Journalists
But the OP doesn't go around saying one branch of smart phones are the best of a bad bunch - he goes around saying that they are good. How does he know? Is he better as reverse engineering than everyone as the NSA put together? (And that's not even taking into account all the potential wrench attack targets at a large US company?)
jhlgkhkhil··on Secure Computing for Journalists
So how would you suggest browsing privately then?
jhlgkhkhil··on Secure Computing for Journalists
More like I the lowly software developer can read code but I can't reverse engineer - and why should I learn?
jhlgkhkhil··on Secure Computing for Journalists
Why would someone who's threat model includes the US government possibly want to trust a totally closed OS made by a US company?? Do you still not see the US government as a threat to journalists? If not how do you justify this position?
jhlgkhkhil··on Secure Computing for Journalists
Why is that?
jhlgkhkhil··on The Future of Not Working
If direct cash transfers work the economy of the recipient country will grow. They can then afford to build their own schools and hospitals - and employ teachers and doctors to work in them.
jhlgkhkhil··on Show HN: PDFLayoutTextStripper – Converts PDF to text while keeping the layout
The OP was almost certainly being sarcastic.
jhlgkhkhil··on Cafe overwhelmed with customers after it is accidentally awarded a Michelin star
noscript. Telegraph works fine without javascript - most newspapers do.
jhlgkhkhil··on I cannot continue working on my add-ons
Does that do collapsible tree structures of tabs?

Does that allow me to bookmark a whole tree and reload it later?

Can that auto hide and auto reveal?

Or is it a shitter half copy of tree style tabs that will never actually be released because it would "confuse normal users".

I'm not a normal user I don't want a crippled product. Normal users use Edge, Safari, IE or Chrome anyway. They won't use Firefox because it doesn't come pre-installed or get advertised on google.com. There is no point in Firefox chasing normal users. They need to chase power users and importantly web-developers.

jhlgkhkhil··on I cannot continue working on my add-ons
I don't give a damn if the functionality I want is in extensions or the main product. I give a damn that it exists. If Vivaldi has the features I want and Firefox can't have them I will use Vivaldi.
jhlgkhkhil··on I cannot continue working on my add-ons
When vimperiator, Zotero and tree style tabs stop working I will need to find another browser.

What a clusterfuck Mozilla is becoming.

jhlgkhkhil··on “My Code is Self-Documenting”
So they quickly fall out of sync with the code and cause more problems than they solve..

Clearly written code already expresses what it does unambiguously. If your code doesn't do what it is supposed to do that is a bigger problem.
