jhfdbkofdcho··on Trump offered to pardon Assange if he provided source for DNC emails – lawyer
He wants Assange to say that it wasn’t the Russians. Therefore there would have been “no collusion!!”
jhfdbkofdcho··on Estimating unobserved SARS-CoV-2 infections in the United States
Not all of those numbers are equally likely though.
jhfdbkofdcho··on Ron Graham has left us
I heard the news this morning from a close friend who I know to be a close friend of Ron Graham’s wife. I was pretty upset (still trying to grapple with him being almost 85!) and I wanted to see if there was another announcement, so I went over to Wikipedia and saw that it hadn’t been updated so I plopped over and added it. For my effort I get this screeching achtung warning sign accusing me of vandalism. I tried clearing it a couple times and an “editor” comes back and adds it again. What a bunch of jerks.
jhfdbkofdcho··on The fall of Quibi: how did a starry $1.75B Netflix rival crash so fast?
The new Reno 911 was really good. In that it is exactly what I wanted (more Reno 912), but i had to watch it on my phone so whatever. There were some moments where you could rotate the phone to watch a different angle but it wasn’t essential. Maybe they should try putting up more Reno 911, couldn’t hurt.
jhfdbkofdcho··on Ask HN: What did you make during lockdown?
Haha, same. I’m a mess.
jhfdbkofdcho··on Americans, it turns out, would rather visit a store than buy food online
It costs more, it’s inconvenient, I often can’t get the items I want and won’t know about it until it’s too late, and the in store shoppers aren’t great at their jobs.

I’m fine buying things off Amazon because if I order something I know I’ll almost certainly get what I ordered.

jhfdbkofdcho··on Why build an entire computer on breadboards? [video]
Gate Array Logic. Field programmable, eraseable and re-programmable, consolidated logic chips.

Commonly used to replace 74xxx chips they do glue logic in classic 8bit computer designs like the Apple II

jhfdbkofdcho··on Gentzen's Rules for Natural Deduction
Yes, I looked that up too and was similarly uh bummed. But I don’t blame the author. I don’t think he sugar coated it.
jhfdbkofdcho··on Chain Reactor – framework for composing executables simulate adversary
"Is this not just make?" is a great comment to throw out at a meeting where someone is presenting a new technical approach to something. It's applicable enough of the time that the presenter must pause to consider the question before responding making you both look more thoughtful than you'd otherwise be.
jhfdbkofdcho··on Is parallel programming hard, and, if so, what can you do about it?
Someone wiser than me observed, “the thing about parallel programming is that it always ends in tears.”
jhfdbkofdcho··on Mikhail Gorbachev’s Pizza Hut Thanksgiving Ad
Wow, I forgot what eat in pizza huts used to be like.
jhfdbkofdcho··on Perl Master Plan
I love Perl, but this is delusional
jhfdbkofdcho··on Chomsky on the arrest of Julian Assange [video]
This is only vaguely what is known in the public record so far in order to bring charges and extradite. I expect there will be more that is made known over time. It’ll be a long, slow process.
jhfdbkofdcho··on Jailbreaking Subaru StarLink
My car’s head unit runs that QNX thing. The firmware is authenticated with a few 512-bit RSA keys, easily cracked. The applications were written as flash and Java applets. This car isn’t 5 years old.
jhfdbkofdcho··on Elwyn Berlekamp has died
“Professor Emeritus of EECS & Mathematics Elwyn Berlekamp passed away on April 9th. He was Chair of EECS from 1977-79 and left an enormous legacy in the department's Computer Science Division which is still felt today. He will be dearly missed. @Cal_Engineer @UCBLettersSci”

Is this similar in purpose/function to bhyve?
jhfdbkofdcho··on Norway Is Walking Away from Billions of Barrels of Oil

jhfdbkofdcho··on “Startup Robs Every Customer They Have for Thousands of Dollars Overnight”
Geeze man, I’m sorry you had to go through that.

jhfdbkofdcho··on “Startup Robs Every Customer They Have for Thousands of Dollars Overnight”
Sounds like a hi tech version of a scam in my city where a guy rents an apartment (or just squats it) and then turns around and sublets it and stops paying rent to the actual owner. People actually living in the unit stuck holding the bag.
jhfdbkofdcho··on Education Dept. rejects most applicants for student loan forgiveness program
Here’s another example but it’s about being in the wrong loan program or repayment plan. But the fact pattern is similar. The servicers and the dept of Ed did a bad job implementing this program.

“Lawson-Ross said she spoke to staff at Great Lakes around 10 times to confirm that she was on track for the forgiveness. "They told me, 'Don't worry about it. You're good to go,'" she said. Had she known her loans didn't actually qualify, she could have simply rolled them into a kind that did.”

jhfdbkofdcho··on Education Dept. rejects most applicants for student loan forgiveness program
In a 54-page opinion, U.S. District Judge Timothy J. Kelly said changes to the eligibility requirements, made several years after the program began, were “arbitrary and capricious.” Kelly called one of the Education Department’s main arguments “nonsense” and said a series of internal Education Department emails “decimates” another argument.

Kelly ruled in favor of three individual plaintiffs who worked several years in public service and were initially approved for loan forgiveness, only to be notified years later that the approval was retroactively denied by the Education Department based on new rules.

jhfdbkofdcho··on Education Dept. rejects most applicants for student loan forgiveness program
One example is that They told people 10 years ago that the job they were working qualified and they got letters each year saying all good and then changed their mind about the job qualifying. So now these people are screwed.
jhfdbkofdcho··on Mockingbirds show heightened aggression after lead exposure

jhfdbkofdcho··on NASA is currently CLOSED
Everytime it looks like there might be a shutdown, affected agencies are supposed to start planning for it and get all this stuff together ahead of time whether or not the shutdown happens. Takes a couple weeks. Is a real waste of time.
jhfdbkofdcho··on Python with a Cocoa GUI on MacOS
A bunch of system utilities are implemented against the version of Python that ships with OS X.

Grep and ask are there for POSIX compatibility, right?

jhfdbkofdcho··on The LaTeX fetish (2016)
I didn’t find this article helpful. But one of my math professors in college quipped,

“LaTeX, never has so much bad math looked so good...”

jhfdbkofdcho··on The Yoda of Silicon Valley
Except Donald Knuth is 7’ tall.
jhfdbkofdcho··on Verizon says to shed 10,400 jobs by mid next year
You’re presuming that those workers have good prospects for finding a new job as good as the one they currently have. This is harder when you are older.
jhfdbkofdcho··on Verizon says to shed 10,400 jobs by mid next year
It’s either take the money now, or if they don’t get enough takers be laid off without as much if any incentive later on.
