jherdman··on Firefox 36.0 released
I'll definitely give Firebug a try. I hadn't even considered it to be honest. I thought I remembered reading a while back that it was no longer important after Mozilla decided to brew their own.
jherdman··on Firefox 36.0 released
I'm presently in the middle of an experiment to use Firefox (and its Developer Edition) as my primary browser when performing my duties as a web developer. So far... It's been kind of rocky. Daily usage of the browser isn't that bad, but the developer tools are lacking compared to Chrome.

A good example is the Network tab. In Chrome, I need only have the developer tools open to capture information about requests. In FF, I must not only have the tools open, but I must also be viewing the tab.

Another minor annoyance is the state of add-ons. It seems that new versions of the add-ons I use regularly are several versions behind their Chrome counterparts. And have you tried to develop an add-on? Wow. The docs are kind of harsh. They could really use a guided example.

jherdman··on Baseline Mac OS X Support merged into FreeBSD package manager
This pull request is a thing of beauty. Each commit is a little slice of (mostly) independent awesome. The project nerd in me just did a little dance.
jherdman··on A tiling window manager written in Rust
My apologies if this is a really naive question, I don't really do this kind of low level systems programming. Do most projects of this sort not have tests, or are they just hard enough that they don't really pay off?
jherdman··on Meditation study shows changes associated with awareness, stress (2011)
I've been using the Headspace app (https://www.headspace.com/) for a few months now and LOVE it. I highly recommend giving it a try. They have a free introductory course you can try too.
jherdman··on Researchers see signature of “Majorana particles” inside superconducting iron
> ... but the title is very confusing to the layman

Given the density of knowledge in your comment, I'm not sure the title could be much different to aid in the understanding of the layman.

jherdman··on Why the Bootstrap 3 Grid Works (2013)
We're using CSS Wizardry Grids in a new project at Precision Nutrition. It's been pretty great so far, though the use of comments is quite something to wrap your head around with respect to grid items.
jherdman··on Brendan Eich Steps Down as Mozilla CEO
Those demanding Eich step down aren't "silencing [his] freedom of speech", they're noting that Mozilla's culture of inclusivity is not congruent with his viewpoint and, as such, isn't fit to lead the organization in the capacity of a CEO.
jherdman··on Popcorn-app no longer on GitHub
> "...and its designee..."

Can someone explain to me whom this portion of the clause refers to?

jherdman··on PostgreSQL: Jsonb has committed
What's involved in supporting JSONB in Rails? Given that you probably want access to the entire JSON blob at the Rails level, aren't you good to go already?
jherdman··on Support for Ruby 1.9.3 will end on February 23, 2015
> "With many apps stuck on DataMapper..."

I have only ever heard of one application in the wild reliant upon DataMapper. Can you share some others that you've heard of? I'm kind of curious.

jherdman··on Amazon RDS for PostgreSQL
Can you elaborate further?
jherdman··on OS X: About Mail Update for Mavericks
And... Mail is still FUBAR. I can't set up any of my accounts with it, it just hangs indefinitely. Hooray... sigh
jherdman··on Ubuntu Edge - Less than 24 hours left, $20 million to go
Unrelated question, but where are you from? I've not seen anyone write numbers quite like this before. It's sort of french, but sort of not...
jherdman··on Rails 4.0: Final version released
Have you considered "The Rails 4 Way"?
jherdman··on Vagrant: Create and configure portable development environments
Has anyone had much luck using Chef solo to provision their Vagrant box AND their production/staging environments? I'm currently attempting this, and it has been kind of a pain in the ass. Chef-solo seems woefully underpowered.
jherdman··on Star Trek, tech companies, and the death of futurism in cinema
You saw the same movie, but you missed his point: this is the same future that folks in the 70's were predicting, and not one as his own generation sees it.
jherdman··on Why aren't Cubans, Quebecois, Saudis, Syrians allowed in Google Code Jam
Ubisoft Montreal already has ;) http://ca.ign.com/articles/2013/04/11/the-nostalgic-insanity...
jherdman··on A man, a Plan. No canals (2011)
Totally off topic, but if the author of the post is reading this, please reconsider the fonts you've used on your blog. It's quite difficult to read as it. Compare and contrast your current design with this http://www.readability.com/articles/4xlr1wov.
jherdman··on Rails Environment Variables
That's kind of interesting. One would think the :null_store would only be useful in some environments, and not as something you may want, for example, in production. In what capacity are you using this?
jherdman··on Faster Rails partial rendering and caching. 78% improvement of test application
Definitely cache_digests, Turbolinks seems to have jumped the queue though. Either way, I'm excited to see some real world numbers in my app.
jherdman··on Faster Rails partial rendering and caching. 78% improvement of test application
Looks interesting. Has a pull request been sent to Rails to incorporate these changes directly?
jherdman··on Textmate to VIM
I moved to Vim from TextMate during a period of my life wherein I was only developing on a 13" Macbook, and found that the amount of screen real estate required to run my terminal for testing, TextMate, and my browser to be unacceptable. With Vim I could simply run it in the terminal, split my screen with TMUX, and run my tests.

I've stayed with Vim because I find it has very efficient means of manipulating text, and tends to stay out of my way. I feel encumbered when using Sublime Text 2, or TextMate (though less so with the former).

jherdman··on Art.sy, a collection of the world's greatest art
Seems to be completely broken on FF 16
jherdman··on The Retina MacBook Pro 13”
Give the 13" Air a shot. It's easily the best machine I've ever owned.
jherdman··on Rsvp.js
Does this differ wildly from jQuery's Deferred object? http://api.jquery.com/category/deferred-object/
jherdman··on Introducing the Redesigned Bitbucket
This is kind of apropos, but why do so many web apps use blue as their primary colour?
jherdman··on VirtualBox broken on Ivy Bridge Macbooks after 10.8.2 and Firmware Update
Thanks for looking into this and working so hard on Vagrant. It's an awesome product.
jherdman··on The Tata AirPod: a car that runs on compressed air w/150-200km range
> The price ($10k) is good enough that it's under my impulse buying threshold for cars.

I'm not even sure where to start with this.

jherdman··on Why Rails 4 Live Streaming is a Big Deal
Yup! You're right. My bad.
