jhales··on Was the Bitcoin Flock Just Sheared?
Why is this on the front page of HN? This is just uninformed ramblings with a reference to an article (Krugman) contain similarly uniformed ramblings.

It just seems lazily uniformed. I doubt he even bothered to actually investigate and corroborate his pump and dump claims, into instead of spreading FUD. If he did, one would think he would have mentioned the alleged DDOS'ing of the exchanges etc. which are widely speculated (even among the 'true believers') to be part of a market manipulation scheme.

jhales··on CNBC now has a Bitcoin ticker
True, I was approximating from when I bought in. More like 500%, when I posted above or 700% now.
jhales··on CNBC now has a Bitcoin ticker
still has a lot more to go before you get to the price levels people started chanting 'bubble' at.
jhales··on CNBC now has a Bitcoin ticker
not quite as fast, but it's still up 300%for the year lol.

jhales··on Orin Kerr: Why I Am Representing Auernheimer Pro Bono on Appeal
I was at the sentencing and the prosecution argued that spoofing the user-agent constituted fraud...

My friend also informed me:

" HTTP has an error code, 401, for unauthorized access. AT&T responded with code 200 meaning OK."

The more one finds out about this case the more incredible it is.

jhales··on Bitcoin interest spikes in Spain as Cyprus financial crisis grows
maybe we should define volatility...
jhales··on Bitcoin interest spikes in Spain as Cyprus financial crisis grows
The value that gold derives from industrial uses is minimal today and practically non-existent historically. Assuming you are talking about jewelry? In that case it's important to consider how much of it's popularity in such matters depend on its ability to be scarce and store value making its value derive from a very similar psychological circle as bitcoins.
jhales··on Bitcoin interest spikes in Spain as Cyprus financial crisis grows
You're right that it is not ideal. There are strengths which make it better than many of the alternatives. If volatility does eventually diminish, while still not a platonic ideal, it would probably be strictly better than any of the alternatives.
jhales··on What do grad students in math do all day?
I'm just finishing a math PhD. Talking to CS PhD's my impression is that we do pretty much the same thing, we just work on different domains.

Those don't count as we can't access them directly. The idea with solar is we can access it directly, but we are using indirect methods.

jhales··on The 50 million dollar lie
Was thinking the same thing. I think it is: "...correlation coefficient of .35..."

jhales··on Quantopian Brings Algorithmic Trading To The Masses
Great stuff.
jhales··on Make the Metric system the standard in the United States
Another petition which may be more effecitve would be directed at the more rational/scientifically minded people at Google (in as much as they don't have Rick Santorum on their pay roll) to rename nexus 4/7/10 to be in terms of metric units not inches. That would may lead to a very rapid comfort with metric sizes for a large and influential chunk of the population.

This would also avoid the potentially unpleasant comparison to those who hope to eradicate Spanish by demand English be the state language.

Taxation is not equivalent to charity or 'giving back.'

This is sadly an incredibly common conflation.

jhales··on The myth of the well-rounded scientist
This is well accepted. Also,Erdos was and is far from alone in this.
jhales··on Taleb: The future will not be cool
I still do, but I also get a lot of pleasure reading about what Taleb might call 'autistic things.'
jhales··on Taleb: The future will not be cool
I can't disagree with anything you said. We seem too have similar tastes as well. lol
jhales··on Taleb: The future will not be cool
I'm rather 'well read.' I don't say this boastfully as I feel a lot of it was a waste of time (although I also found a lot of philosphy/literature etc. very insightful).
jhales··on Taleb: The future will not be cool
I think Taleb's distinction is that sci-fi was about the future, while the rest was about the past.
jhales··on An ABC proof too tough even for mathematicians
In theory - The reality is there is not a working compiler except for a few special cases.
jhales··on “Involuntary porn” site tests the boundaries of legal extortion
True, but for the data couldn't you just randomly sample from an address book or just make up addresses? You could attach hundreds of photos to addresses (reals ones) and hundreds of addresses to each photo.
jhales··on “Involuntary porn” site tests the boundaries of legal extortion
Sure, I am definitely just armchair quarterbacking to their actual results.

It just seems like another one will pop up and you will be playing wack-a-mole with a rather long and expensive sounding process no?

jhales··on The Curiously Different Inflation Perspectives of Men and Women [pdf]
lol, thank you for assisting the special needs HN readers like myself :)
jhales··on “Involuntary porn” site tests the boundaries of legal extortion
Wouldn't a more effective strategy be to deluge the site (or make many similar sites) with nudes and contact details so as to destroy any credibility?

Without credibility humiliation would be very difficult.

Also, where are the anonymous vigilantes who target child porn?

jhales··on The Curiously Different Inflation Perspectives of Men and Women [pdf]
It would be interesting to see this same question asked for income brackets and ethnic groups.
