jgust··on Digital Echoes and Unquiet Minds
Have you tried putting your phone in "grayscale" mode? Works wonders for turning your smartphone back into a "tool" instead of a "toy".
jgust··on Digital Echoes and Unquiet Minds
I've never been able to type on a touch screen as efficiently as my blackberry 9000 keyboard. RIP
jgust··on What do scientists tell us about boxing's gender row?
I understand the point you're trying to make, but this entire thread misses the forest for the trees. Rules & regulations don't exist to create equality or fairness, it's to foster competition. We don't watch competitions for how equal and fair they are. By separating competition by gender, we have increased the opportunities to witness competitiveness. How, going forward, can we maximize that metric? That will be the future of sport.
jgust··on Chicago Fed President Goolsbee says if economy deteriorates, Fed will 'fix it'
Might it be overly generous to attribute these outcomes to recent actions by people in these instituions vs. the USD still being the world reserve currency?
jgust··on How Olympics officials try to catch “motor doping”
You also, perhaps intentionally, described all of motorsports.

Isn't it all built (run?) on sand?

jgust··on The hustle never ends and I'm so over it
1 week: no planning, just reaction

2 weeks: minimal planning effort, not a long enough period to agitate stakeholders when you say "next sprint"

4 weeks: it's MY request and I NEED IT NOW!

jgust··on What motorcycles teach about maintenance
> Mostly you look at things for what "they are" or "how they look" but not "how they work" or "their potential uses"

Say more. I feel I'm the exact opposite if I understand you correctly.

jgust··on WhatsApp could disappear from UK over privacy concerns, ministers told
That sounds like an argument for banning WhatsApp in favor of transparency...
jgust··on It happened to me today: $80/hr writer replaced with ChatGPT
Something something 100 monkeys with a typewriter? I'm expecting some margin of error introduced into these models that produces a surreal fever dream era of AI generated content on the internet.

jgust··on California bill would ban sales of Skittles, other ‘toxic’ snacks
I'm worried less about the lettuce (which we have little control over) and more about what's sprayed on the lettuce (which we do have control over). It seems like man-made chemicals added to food have a significantly higher probability of harming humans than digging something straight out of the ground and eating it, even if it's GMO.
jgust··on California bill would ban sales of Skittles, other ‘toxic’ snacks
I have no idea how these things work, but what struck me is the "restrictive" tone in the EU ("We couldn't find an adequate study proving or disproving, therefore we assume it's dangerous until proven otherwise") vs. what I view as a "permissive" view in the US ("We couldn't find an adequate study proving or disproving, therefore we assume it's safe until proven otherwise").

When it comes to things I put in my body, I would personally prefer the EU approach.

jgust··on Anyone else witnessing a panic inside NLP orgs of big tech companies?
Let's assume that GPT eliminates an entire field of experts, runs out of training data, and whoever is at the helm of that GPT program decides that it's lucrative enough to obtain more/better data. One alternative is subsidizing these experts to do this type of work and plug it directly into the model. I don't expect the nature of the work to change, more likely it's the signature on the check and the availability of the datasets.
jgust··on Anyone else witnessing a panic inside NLP orgs of big tech companies?
Presumably this problem is solved with technology improvements or the need is recognized to hire experts capable of generating high quality training material. In either situation, there's going to be extreme discomfort.
jgust··on Twitter was down
This is a very xenophobic view on immigration, and arguably the status quo. Past performance does not equate to future results, but I think you can draw the conclusion that the immense diversity that exists in the US compared to "rest of world" is a competitive advantage. What would it mean to lean in?
jgust··on Twitter was down
^ This is roughly the point I was trying to make.
jgust··on Twitter was down
> Unfortunate H-1Bs tied to the job.

Or we could reduce the hoops & cycle time for legal immigration. The US has an opportunity right now to cement itself as the leader in technology for the next 2-3 decades and stave off the impending population growth crisis if we could find a way to enable people who want to live here to live here.

jgust··on U.S. corn-based ethanol worse for the climate than gasoline, study finds
Exactly. More ICE cars are coming standard with turbochargers which would enable more to take advantage of the extra octane, but it's an optimization problem with constraints: fuel efficiency, reliability, drive-ability, emissions to name a few.
jgust··on U.S. corn-based ethanol worse for the climate than gasoline, study finds
That is the theory behind "flex fuel" vehicles. In practice, the optimizations don't materialize in real world usage. This is likely because of safety factors built into the ECM preventing the engine from running enough timing advance to take advantage of the octane of a blended fuel.
jgust··on Supreme Court Doesn't Want to Create ‘World of Lawsuits’ for Tech Firms
I remember being taught the concept of "critical mass" a long time ago in uni which is at the core of every social media problem.
jgust··on Is Seattle a 15-minute city? It depends on where you want to walk
What's the difference between walking and hiking, elevation gain?
jgust··on Endemic pathogens are causing psychiatric illnesses and shortening lives
The common denominator here seems to be caseload. Lower caseload, lower hours per week, lower burnout, more focus time, more deep thinking. Sound familiar to anyone in software?
jgust··on Microservices are hard
I think that's covered under "context".
jgust··on Show HN: I gained 50k users for my app with NO marketing

jgust··on Show HN: I gained 50k users for my app with NO marketing
It's in the app store(s) which is arguably a form of marketing.
jgust··on Does the world have enough lithium to move to electric vehicles?
I think you just confirmed for me that you don't know what you're talking about.
jgust··on Does the world have enough lithium to move to electric vehicles?
> e-bicycle with a small roof can ride as long as the Sun shines

Is this true? I can go through a 630Wh battery in 2-3 hours of riding and I can't imagine current solar being able to keep up with that. I think you might get an extra ~30 minutes of riding, but not ~forever~ unless you mean pedal power.
