jgust··on Pointless work meetings 'really a form of therapy'
You could summarize and say "edicts cause unintended consequences". Nature (and by extension, humanity) doesn't operate on booleans, and it's lazy to assume so. It takes work to identify positive behaviors and incentivize them, and identify negative behaviors and disincentive them. Treating the symptoms with an edict will almost always result in new and interesting things that you never knew you didn't want. Your example is great.
jgust··on Supercritical CO2 is heavy like a liquid, with weird and useful properties
Particles with thin films on them, of course.
jgust··on Firefighting foam leaves toxic legacy in Californians’ drinking water
FWIW I witnessed a tweaker perched on top of one those public water fountains on the LFT, washing his bottom. I'd need to be nearly dead from dehydration to drink from one at this point.
jgust··on A Gentle introduction to Kubernetes with more than just the basics
To bake a pie, you must first invent the universe.
jgust··on Let's build houses for people, not cars
Trees, meet forest. Bus depot, power station, factory, Amazon warehouse, sewage treatment plant. They are interchangeable in the sense that you don't necessarily want to live directly next to one, which is why to an extent zoning exists.
jgust··on Time anxiety: is it too late?
Examples for the curious?
jgust··on Let's build houses for people, not cars
Nothing like buying a house and having a bus depot opened on the lot next door a year later. #freemarket
jgust··on Why Finland leads the world in flexible work
All fair points. I was discouraged when I read your original comment, because I took it at face value as "this is what it is, this is what it always will be" but that wasn't your intention.
jgust··on Why Finland leads the world in flexible work
You state this like it's a natural fact. That's how it is in many places, _today_. It doesn't have to be this way. As far as I know, there is no law of physics that has us locked into this way of operating society.
jgust··on A Bid to Maintain One of the World’s Oldest Culinary Traditions
Not related to the article, so feel free to downvote.

I had to open this in Safari and "capture" it in reading mode before the page loaded fully to read the full article. Sort of anti-user.

jgust··on The not so hidden cost of sharing code between iOS and Android
I took this as an argument for a thin, or at least thinner, client. If something is complicated and costly to maintain - shouldn't it move to the server? What complicated processes are you doing on-device that couldn't be done somewhere else & fronted by an API?
jgust··on Where will ‘garage orphans’ charge electric cars?
Wow. The grid in the US sucks.
jgust··on Where will ‘garage orphans’ charge electric cars?
I imagine a world where the electricity grid is intelligent enough to have a "conversation" with appliances to efficiently spread load across the day, more accurately plan capacity, and do it at a lower cost to consumers and the environment.
jgust··on Endangered Languages Project
> different languages encode different thought patterns

I find this so interesting and I want it to be true. The Guugu Ymithirr come to mind, whose directional prepositions are based on cardinal directions. This difference, when compared to English for example, is thought to be the main factor in why the people have such a strong "internal compass".

jgust··on Jony Ive to form independent design company with Apple as client
Just echoing some absurd justifications/arguments for bad design made by diehard Apple fans.

jgust··on US Customs Database Of Traveler Photos Was Hacked And Stolen
In this case, CBP is collecting this data without the direct consent of _the people_, so who in this case is accountable?

It's not _the people_ who made the decision to collect this data.

jgust··on Amazon rolls out machines that pack orders and replace jobs
Piling on to this, customer service isn't just an interaction with an [entity] when something goes wrong. I would fairly categorize the initial shopping & fulfillment experience in the context of Amazon's e-commerce product as "customer service". If it solves your problem correctly & reliably, I'd call that "good customer service".
jgust··on Listen to TurboTax Lie to Get Out of Refunding Overcharged Customers
But it doesn't work that way now, therefore it can NEVER work that way!
jgust··on The gig economy is quietly undermining a century of worker protections
There is a very real scenario for many workers that comes down to this:

a) continue working this horrible job and survive

b) quit working this horrible job and (lose healthcare/don't pay bill xyz/starve/insert outcome here)

My argument is that if survival isn't tied to gainful employment, the nature of work and the market will shift.

jgust··on The gig economy is quietly undermining a century of worker protections
If the US ever manages to separate the safety net (healthcare, basic living needs covered, retirement) from full time employment I can see the argument for a gig economy working. You may actually see "the market" compete for employees in a way that benefits them instead of how full time employment works today. Given the fact that corporations are far more effective at passing laws that benefit them vs. the American people, I'm not going to hold my breath.
jgust··on US Uber drivers plan 12-hour shutdown over pay and conditions
The "rats" will come, be assured.
jgust··on AI is not coming for you
This is the example I use when knowledge workers lose their minds over ML. Do you _enjoy_ menial tasks? If so, I'm sorry; they are probably going to be sucked up by machines.

This is an awesome opportunity to offload busy work & improve your overall "product". What if, for example, these lawyers and paralegals could now spend more time with their clients for less money, or handle more clients, making top quality legal services more affordable for more people? That would be an awesome scenario to see play out, and possibly a major help to those who never had access to legal help.

jgust··on Microsoft turned down facial-recognition sales on human rights concerns

jgust··on Agile Lite: Agile without all the burnout
Thanks!
jgust··on Agile Lite: Agile without all the burnout
Just like everything, there are levels to this.
jgust··on Boeing software under scrutiny as Ethiopia prepares crash report
This speaks to me. You said this much better than I did. What bugs me about a lot of developers is that they can't see the forest from the trees.
jgust··on Agile Lite: Agile without all the burnout
The point of standups is to help teams to learn to communicate and to steer the team to a habit of working on the most important things. Once that's a behavior, standups can be less frequent or dropped all together. This is especially useful for new teams or when the team changes.
jgust··on Agile Lite: Agile without all the burnout
> Always do the simplest thing.

Can you clarify? If you meant "always search for the simplest solution" I agree. If you meant, "always do the easiest tasks" I don't.

jgust··on Boeing software under scrutiny as Ethiopia prepares crash report
Do _most_ companies follow DO-178C requirements? Do _most_ software engineers even know what that is?
