jgj··on “Paleofantasy”: Stone Age delusions
Paleo is not a "low carb" diet. The point of Paleo is not to reduce the number of carbohydrates you ingest; nor is it to enter ketosis; nor is the primary goal of Paleo to lose weight. You have been reading the wrong things, and I can't even imagine what lead you to believe that you could run at any serious level without ingesting carbs.

The pop-fad elements of the diet that have been parroted by journalists are generally the "elevator pitch" version of the diet, not the real 'meat' (pun so intended).

The main tenets of the diet are to avoid processed and/or high-sugar food, grains, (non-fermented) legumes, bad fats/oils (especially those from seeds), and dairy, and to seek out whole foods, fish and lean meats (especially from ruminants and organs) and good sources of fat (with good omega 3/6 ratio). Some folks can handle dairy just fine and do so. Some can eat white rice or white potatos and suffer no ill effects. Those are not outright banned by the diet. Carbohydrates can come in many forms that are accessible on the diet.

You were lied to, and I'm sorry that you tried to run without eating carbs, I image that would be unpleasant. But please discontinue spreading misinformation about Paleo, as it has vast benefits when applied correctly and in line with your body's needs.

jgj··on SimCity Burning: A Warning to Publishers on The Dangers of Always-Online DRM
I found this in one of the other sim city threads du jour: http://www.kickstarter.com/projects/1584821767/civitas-plan-...

they are getting much of my monies

EDIT: Don't remember which thread i found it in, so here are the posts that may have been the one that I found the kickstarter link in:

jgj··on LayerVault Sends DMCA Takedown Letter re Flat-UI
A really good way to coerce the pitchforks back into their sheds is to provide proof, especially when your DMCA is vague and posted on a ridiculously public platform.

Allan has done neither, and still hasn't done so in his tweets or this post over on his bubbly walled garden. A few simple side-by-side screenshots would have sufficed and put the court of public opinion squarely on his side. He may be completely in the right but his approach left him open to the "pitchforks" he's so dismissively bemoaning.

jgj··on Why firing brilliant assholes is required to build a great engineering culture
"Engineers care less about equity, salary and benefits and more about the problems they’re going to be working on."

TIL I am not worthy of the title "Engineer"

I can work on interesting problems on my own time. Salary from some Schmoe's payroll account enables me to do that.

jgj··on Dwarf Fortress: Ten hours with the most inscrutable video game of all time
For a Dwarf-Fortress-like experience with a much more friendly UI and reasonable learning curve, try Gnomoria (http://gnomoria.com)

The developer is awesome and releases an update (mostly) every week. It made it through Steam Greenlight but hasn't been released there yet. It is well worth the 8 bucks.

As a person who hates repeating himself, my biggest problem with DF and its difficulty curve was that I often would make a small mistake early in the game, like expand too fast or forget to close off an entrance to a cavern, and have to start all over, and repeat the same X steps to get a basic civilization going, which gets tiresome. Gnomoria is no different, but it is much more forgiving in the early going and leads to fewer short-order restarts. Also, graphics!

jgj··on Sequel Pro 1.0 released
I was looking for one not too long ago and came upon this:

http://inductionapp.com

...which I couldn't use because I'm on 10.6. the website is colorful though so there's that.

I ended up using this...

http://www.teampostgresql.com

which is browser based but does the job

jgj··on Show HN: Behave.js – Coding Behaviors for textarea elements
It's funny, in another thread he got voted down as close to #f6f6ef as I've ever seen and scolded to boot
jgj··on How an unsigned rapper changed music
Awful rappers make it to the top of charts on a regular basis. Rap music sells because of the beat and, to a lesser extent, the hook. Macklemore isn't awful, but as rappers go he's nothing too special. His hustle should be admired as should his ear for beats.
jgj··on How an unsigned rapper changed music
That's, at best, one thing that can separate good writers from average writers. Great rappers don't necessarily need to have complex rhyme schemes, and a complex rhyme scheme does not a great rapper make. Neither does a complex rhyme scheme alone make a great writer, as content and the use of various literary devices come into play as well.

IMHO, the mark of a truly great rapper is the ability to become an instrument on the track while still communicating a great deal in a small number of words. Flow and presence are as important as lyrics and rhyme schemes, and a great rapper is one who has at least 3 out of those 4 qualities at a high level, with the 4th not bad enough to detract from the others.

jgj··on Programmer Interrupted
Whenever possible, I delay interruption by taking 15-30 seconds to cache my current train of thought while holding up a "one moment" finger at the perpetrator. Just distilling my train of thought into a sentence or two, or a mnemonic device of sorts, helps me get back into what I was doing quicker.
jgj··on MailChimp Annual Report
Are you on an OS that hides the scrollbar? I scroll any time I hit a webpage anyway, but even if I didn't I would look over at my scrollbar and see that there is plenty of room to scroll before getting frustrated.
jgj··on Gates Foundation study: We’ve figured out what makes a good teacher
I'm not sure that the argument is even that existing standardized tests are bad so much as that they are given too much priority. They should not be the only or primary means by which teachers, students, districts, etc are benchmarked (and in turn, rewarded or disciplined). "Teaching the test" is the problem, not necessarily the tests themselves.
jgj··on Show HN: Fresh, high-quality bedding delivered weekly. Say what?
I think, like brk mentioned, the cost of sheets is not terribly high and neither is the burden of washing them. For me to be interested in a service like this it would need to offer some combination of the following: - Cheaper than buying new sheets (offering expensive sheets at much less than their retail cost per month would be a nice selling point) - Someone to put them on my bed for me (honestly I don't mind doing laundry, but I hate making my bed. go figure) - Free upgrade to more pillow cases. I sleep with 8 king-sized pillows and I'm not ashamed to admit it. - A selectable scent option. If I could get sheets guaranteed to smell like fresh coffee for the week until I get new ones, I'd be seriously interested. - More colors and patterns. White sheets feel like a hotel, I'd definitely want to mix it up.

You might want to also consider adding in fresh pillows as an add-on, as really nice pillows can be costly and having the pillows themselves be constantly washed and fluffed would be nice.

Cool idea though, cheers.

jgj··on Coin Puzzle: Predict the Other's Coin
The question should really be rephrased to "Will C make money if he/she plays this game?" Maybe C doesn't like money, has too much of it but really only likes giving it out after coordinated acts of random chance. Then C would love this game regardless of A and B's strategy. Maybe C spends all of his/her free time at RPS tournaments, throwing singles at the winners like a rap video.

jgj··on I admire Amazon. I just don’t shop there anymore.
I wonder if the author did any research or reflection into the supply chain of the local shops he so self-ingratiatingly now espouses. Does he know for sure that the books he special orders from inside of a building other than his home don't just, you know, come from Amazon?
jgj··on Can English Majors Be Good Developers?
Interesting that you use the term "weave" which is so often associated with the construction of a good plot in writing/storytelling.

That said, I think maybe you haven't read good enough fiction :)
