jgamman··on In Math Cram Sessions, Solving for Why
aside: Sisk et al (To What Extent and Under Which Circumstances Are Growth Mind-Sets Important to Academic Achievement? Two Meta-Analyses DOI 10.1177/0956797617739704) looked at >450,000 students and found little or no effect size for this approach.

standard primary literature caveats etc and where it is/is not applicable but this does put 'growth mindset' on the back foot.

jgamman··on Clayton Christensen: Half of U.S. colleges will be bankrupt in 10 to 15 years
If we unbundle the courses and/or make MOOCS minimally OK - what's to stop students hiring their own TA to help them through. So long as you pair this up with a nationally recognised micro-credential framework you could see the development of a "faculty" led small-school revival. Add in some sort of matchmaker service at critical mass, some sort of pedagogy credential (how to teach well, not what to teach) and education becomes a nice small business opportunity for PhD holders.
jgamman··on Skim reading is the new normal. The effect on society is profound
the new new normal is to check the HN comments first...
jgamman··on Solar Surpasses Gas and Wind as Biggest Source of New U.S. Power
NZ has been running an 600 km HVDC line for decades for exactly the same reason - lots of hydropower in the south, lots of demand in the north. difficult? certainly. but it's definitely a solved problem.

jgamman··on Ditch the Batteries: Off-Grid Compressed Air Energy Storage
and use platinum in the fuel cells. the real-world problems are pretty obvious though - Pt is worth stealing and it's expensive 'cause there aint that much of it so you can't expect to use 100x as much as now and not expect the price to change. FC's are niche. Batteries won.
jgamman··on Why Is New Zealand So Often Left Off World Maps?
yep. the 'mainland' in NZ refers to a chunk of the Sth Island - from back in the day when english migrants were busy recreating the english aristocracy.
jgamman··on Computing Partial Differential Equations with Water
you can see the moniac running if you happen to be in wellington on the first(?) friday of the month. there's a refurbished one in the foyer of the reserve bank (invented by a NZer - while employed in another country of course).
jgamman··on Facebook to Research Ad-Free Subscription-Based Version
like i'd trust that to happen properly
jgamman··on Ask HN: What problem in your industry is a potential startup?
i can't see a business model - the scientist is already paying with their time to get something working that is just good enough for publication. all the problems you describe are down the road and scientists kick that to 'industry'. unless your 'right way' is also easier to boot, why would they add to their time?
jgamman··on NASA completes full-power tests of small, portable nuclear reactor
Ormat does large Stirling engines for geothermal power. The binary units mean you don't run the risk of taking too much of the reservoir fluid. I wouldn't be surprised if tech like this ramps up for the same reason battery tech went nuts when people wanted longer life electronics - except the driver is climate change and carbon pricing.
jgamman··on Rethinking GPS: Engineering Next-Gen Location at Uber
they hire a deliveroo task rabbit to run behind every uber txting constantly to the customer where they are - bonus, can use local landmarks as way finders ;-)
jgamman··on Bret Victor Redesigns Classic Strogatz Paper (2011)
perhaps the point is also 'code to learn' - i always thought archiving these constructions would be an interesting way of seeing how tangentially educated people can get themselves from their area of expertise to this result and a fantastic resource for students or life long learners.
jgamman··on Stock Markets Tumble Amid Worries Over Tech Firms and Trade Tensions
my assumption is that anything new is weaponised _first_ and then slowly over time diffuses out into the world and is nett positive (it's like society figures out how to take the spikey edges off) but you definitely don't want to be in the leading edge of the transition...

jgamman··on Palantir Wins $876M U.S. Army Contract
good to see a fellow NZer getting ahead in the world.
jgamman··on Ask HN: Simple tools/hack for small project management
excel/LO as a list of @#@#-that-needs-to-get-done. next column over is a r/b/g traffic lights. move them around in rough order. highlight those that are fixed dates. scribble on post it notes. lots and lots of post it notes and physically screw them up and throw them away. you'd be surprised how robust this is for single owner projects. managing a team? need different tool. i've used basecamp and was v happy.
jgamman··on Ask HN: Any tips on getting into teaching at private schools?
pretty sure you'll need to get a degree and a teaching certification otherwise you'll be a teacher's aide. at least in my country.
jgamman··on Ask HN: TTW paypal guy gets NZ citizenship: doesn't show up in HN
thank you.
jgamman··on China, Unhampered by Rules, Races Ahead in Gene-Editing Trials
'unhampered' seems like a loaded word for a headline. 'unregulated' seems like it could be inserted and would change the tone considerably. ahhh wsj, how i've never lamented not clicking on one of your links.
jgamman··on How MacArthur Geniuses Handle Their Money Windfalls
the very first example in the story was a dancer that paid off $180k in loans - almost a textbook example of someone that's 'poor'. this grant is literally a lottery win for some of them
jgamman··on Ask HN: What is the best book you read on 2017?
The Monsters of Education Technology
jgamman··on Courtroom AI system claims almost 90 percent accuracy in detecting lies
it's the 10% i'm worried about - what's the false positive rate? priors or it didn't happen...
jgamman··on Excel team considering Python as scripting language: asking for feedback
that's cool - hadn't realised. i still dream about a word-excel mashup. imagine a table in word that when you click on it revolves around to reveal a spreadsheet and you hook the 'other side' to the calculation cells. literally separate data and text/analysis but packaged as a unit.
jgamman··on Firefox is on a slippery slope
>It is mostly text [...] doesn't make it readable at all.

that is the weirdest comment ever. On HN no less which is literally just text.

jgamman··on Excel team considering Python as scripting language: asking for feedback
Aim for a front end notebook interface like Jupyter or Mathematica. Most excel i've had to play with was to store/manipulate data _and then_ C&P charts or data to word for the report. Seriously, notebooks.
jgamman··on Ask HN: What are some sabbatical programs for working software engineers?
I'm going back to uni to get qualified as a high school teacher. if i had the skills I'd complement kicking around on campus again with contributions to the Jupyter notebook (which i think is going to do wonders for high school students).
jgamman··on Ask HN: What is the reason behind the rise of cryptocurrency?
people with 10s of Giga $$ hiding in tax havens are moving it to the next hidey hole. maybe they started it, mined the first few hundred thousand coins and now they're just dumping $$ into it at regular-ish intervals for long enough that the rest of us just get used to it. maybe a bit like how the Brazilians got the Real which is an interesting story in and of itself.
jgamman··on What Would You Pay to Keep Your Digital Footprint 100% Private?
i wonder if you could set up an agent on your phone (for instance) that 'sells' one ad per day to the highest bidder. your data profile lives on your phone encrypted up the wazoo but there's an API that goes out, finds the company wanting to get in touch with x, y, z person and is willing to pay, say $50 to get in touch with you.
jgamman··on DIY MacBook Stand
AFAIK Ponoko just uses the line widths to indicate cuts vs etching. they provide an Inkscape template but I don't think it's required so long as the line widths are right.
jgamman··on Kenya is using the earth's heat to power the country
drilling the well is about $1 million per km. only a few spots around the world make 1-2 km wells cost effective for extracting energy for electricity. this is even worse with the costs of PV installed now 100 fold less than the marginal cost of geothermal.

having said that, a resilient system would have a baseload of electricity from geothermal, some peaking from hydro and plenty of PV/wind. mind you, i'm biased since i live in NZ and we're well on the way to 95+% electricity renewables...
