jgalt212··on When random is not actually random enough
A lot of crypto people bang on and on about choosing a proper random number generator, but if your inadequate random number generator is 1/10 less random than SOA, isn't RSA 2048 still unbreakable?
jgalt212··on Nobel Prize in Physics 2026: Francis Halzen
The Telescope in the Ice was a solid book about this.

Merc taking 1 and 2 in ever race during the first 8 years of hybrid era is balanced?
jgalt212··on Powerless F1 drivers frustrated by Bahrain F1 software glitch
> I've watched F1 for more than 2 decades, from the paragraph above I realize this year's F1 is basically comparable to AI slop...

F1 has been unsatisfying since the move to hybrid power trains.

I hear you, but there's just so many knobs on postgres that at our correct scale we couldn't amortize the time and effort to become proficient at postges.
jgalt212··on Micron CEO Says Memory Supply Will Be Much Tighter in 2027 and 2028 Than in 2026
The counterpoint is that that new, and existing, mortgage originators did not fare so well after the mortgage market collapsed in the GFC. During large parts of the housing boom deep in the money mortgages could not be refinanced as quickly as borrowers would like due to capacity constraints at the originator level. Obv, not including subprime originators, where there was arguably 10X the needed capacity.

jgalt212··on Adding Floating-Point Decimals for Fun and Profit
Yeah, I know there's more than one way to skin a cat. My point is that storing all accounting values in pennies is overrated.
jgalt212··on Micron CEO Says Memory Supply Will Be Much Tighter in 2027 and 2028 Than in 2026
> because I prioritized extremely high prices for a few years that might have the effect of changing the arithmetic for potential competitors that wouldn't have done it before.

Or maybe they believe the demand is not sustainable, and they don't want to fund $10B ghost fabs.

jgalt212··on Adding Floating-Point Decimals for Fun and Profit
> Many people know that you shouldn’t do decimal calculations, such as those involving U.S. dollars and cents, with the floating-point numbers in most programming languages. This is because decimal numbers can’t be expressed exactly as such floating-point numbers, so you will encounter rounding errors.

Decimals or pennies, you still have rounding errors. For example, if your contract is $100 / year. You will get the full $100 if you bill yearly, quarterly, or semi-annually. But if you bill monthly, no matter if you deal in pennies or fractional dollars, the sum total of your invoices for the year will be less than $100.

jgalt212··on Nissan's third generation e-POWER powertrain
> normal average US mileage of 14,000mi in a year.

That sounds very high. The most common lease cap is 10k miles per year.

jgalt212··on Nissan's third generation e-POWER powertrain
Yes, useful at the personal level. I agree. But at the community level, emission reduction is most useful for cities.
jgalt212··on Nissan's third generation e-POWER powertrain
> Sorry, but how are these two related?

I dunno. Ask the OP.

jgalt212··on Nissan's third generation e-POWER powertrain
I recently got a hybrid because I wanted better gas mileage--no more, no less. Without subsidies, I can't get the math to work for an EV.
jgalt212··on Nissan's third generation e-POWER powertrain
How many cities offer both abundant street parking and abundant charging stations?
jgalt212··on Nissan's third generation e-POWER powertrain
That's the irony of EVs. They're most useful in cities--short driving distances and less emissions in dense areas, but easiest for the consumer to use in the burbs where driving distances are longer and emissions are less of an issue.
jgalt212··on I Posed as a Problem Gambler. DraftKings Made Me a VIP
Matt Levine discussed this relevant NY Times article.

jgalt212··on Mercury 2.5 LLM hits 770 tokens per second
fair enough, but in my experience fast models seem to be 5-10X faster than slow models.
jgalt212··on What About Rails?
> in terms of functionality and value to users, software ought to be malleable and composable.

For technically competent users, sure. but for everyone else the UI should just follow the principal of least surprise.

jgalt212··on Mercury 2.5 LLM hits 770 tokens per second
fast results that you need to verify are better than slow (allegedly better) results that you still need to verify. REPL vs batch.
jgalt212··on DoorDash Spent $1.4M Trying to Stop Mamdani from Becoming Mayor. Now We Know Why
Information wants to be free. But other than AI slop (where the tokens have become too cheap to meter), information costs money to produce. Pay with you info or your money. It's amazing how many people just cannot come to grips with that concept.
