I just wanted to add a suggestion over the reasonable evaluation and the option to buy. In our startup, the company has taken life insurance on both founders and half of the insurance amount almost match a valuation we as founder agree on at the start of each year. This is mostly for the first year(s) where the company is not getting that much revenues.
So what happens if one of us dies is that their family will get half of the life insurance for their equity. The other half is to help the company cope with the fact one of us is gone. This may sound expensive, but in fact for guys in their thirties and in good shape it is quite cheap.
BTW the TED talk is http://www.ted.com/talks/dan_pink_on_motivation.html
So battery is not as good, but the notifications are always timely, since they work in background and latitude keeps my position updated, those are probably the culprit for shorter battery life.
-My iPhone would not rotate when I was rotating my phone, I had to do it 2-3 times or exit safari and restart in the landscape orientation for it to switch. At other time the orientation changed but the width was not changed.
-I'm not a big fan of reboot so every 2 or 3 days safari would just start to crash on page load with no reason. Only solved by a reboot.
-On the reboot front, once I made everyone at home change there time. Since my phone is taking it's time from the cell provider and this as always worked correctly on my many Motorola phones, I told everybody they were 10 minutes forward. The day after, at work I saw the time on a friends iPhone and it was also 10 minutes forward. This made no sense, we have the same provider. It was probably more than a week since my last reboot. Android may have the same problem, I don't know.
-OS 3 gave us the search but before that remembering on which page some of the less used apps were was just a pain. I still don't like this way of organizing, but I lack a better solution.
-Talk about obscure way of doing some action on the iPhone. As an example, have you taken a screenshot? The way to do it appeared to you how?
-I think the HTC magic has too many buttons, but the iPhone lacks some. Even after a year of using my iPhone, I still sometimes closed the application with the home button while I was just trying to back off one level. In fact the back button on the Android and the way application stack themselves is really superior.
The iPhone 3Gs finally has a camera. Come on the 3G was not even able to read bar codes (except with red laser, doing image correction and enhancement)
After 2 weeks without my iPhone what I miss the most is the vibration/ringer switch. This is a great feature.
The one feature that keeps me from going back on the Android is the notifications "pull down"
One last thing, latitude on Android is awesome;-)
In the context of one game you can see piracy as lost sales, but in the long term those are people that were exposed to your product and that you may convert later. I know that I did copy a lot of games before working, but then for a couple of years I bought a lot. Now I play rarely, but most of the games I bought were from developers I had previously copied.
Mozilla/5.0 (X11; U; Linux i686; en-US; rv:1.9.1) Gecko/20090701 Ubuntu/9.04 (jaunty) Shiretoko/3.5 GTB5
I don't care and don't mind waiting for the meta-package to point to 3.5, but maybe some do.
We had some memory consumption problems also when we decided to migrate and just switching to passenger did little for those. It was really the switch to REE that made the difference. Also the memory was not really from complex database operation, it was for rendering huge erb templates for the Googlebots. In the end there were no reason to always generate those templates and caching solved the problem definitively, but with REE it was already acceptable and we could have let it be for some months too.
Unless you really have to have that private jet.
I'm always a bit surprised that new segment between B&B, Vacation Rentals and hotels are invented. Is it that people think those existing segments are well served?
We are self-financed and so we do contract to pay our living expenses. It is working great for us, but often we will get sucked in client projects. Those distractions have been costing a lot in term of growth. 5% for the intros and money to just focus on your idea for 12 weeks is certainly worth it.
We registered as a company and just getting the legal department to allow us to submit took 4 weeks. After that the review of the application "Stay Tonight" took only about 2 weeks, but it did not show in a AppStore search for 2 more weeks. In fact we had to report an incident for it to show up in a search. Then the date of availability was left to the approval date and not the discoverability date, so we never showed in the new app section. So it took about 8 weeks, not too bad.
So we could go back to the vision project and start that "great idea" we had, but instead we often find ourselves trying to make the current product generate more revenues.
I think that may be responsible with the problem PG sees with bootstrapping. "The mere fact that bootstrapped startups tend to be famous on that account should set off alarm bells." I think there are a lot of successful bootstrapped startup that are just not successful enough to be famous in any way. Ours is heading that way.
I think this is one problem with Freebase. Another problem I see is the structuring of the data, it is a hurdle to sharing.
Finally the last problem I see is Data is currently very much seen as a competitive advantage. When Google introduce functionalities to make corrections on Google Maps, I don’t think they do it to share with everyone else. They do it because they want Google Maps to be the destination with the best possible data. A wiki of data is a great idea, but I’m not sure we have the solution yet.
