jfno67··on The Google I/O freebie I'm hoping for: Nothing
I went to Google developer day and all IO. The trend is for less in depth presentation and I miss the candor of the first year, but it is still a fabulous occasion to talk directly with people from Google and other devs.
jfno67··on The Google I/O freebie I'm hoping for: Nothing
The cost of the conference is relative. There's a lot of international attendees and for them the price is more than the freebies.

What I have seen with higher price conference is that you get a lot of corporate attendees and more lower to middle management than developers. It may have been also because of the conference too (oracle, webmethods and Microsoft)

jfno67··on The Google I/O freebie I'm hoping for: Nothing
Because 2 years ago everyone was registering there HTC ion with the 1 month prepaid sims they gave. Anyway that's the reason they gave.
jfno67··on The Google I/O freebie I'm hoping for: Nothing
I believe this year you will have to attend. Last year they sent the Droid or (Nexus One outside the U.S.) prior to the conference, there is nothing auguring to this early giveaway this year.

I'm attending this year again and I'm flying from Canada. No way I would attend just for the freebies. The plane is currently at close to 800$ and my hotel will be probably at least 600$. If I wanted a phone, I would buy one, it's much cheaper. And I would not miss 3-4 days of work. I love the freebies, but they would be awfully expensive if the conference had no intrinsic value for me.

jfno67··on As predicted on HN: Kindle Lending Club
To lend a book on the kindle you just have to enter the name and email of the borrower. Then the book is removed from your kindle account for 14 days, and it will stay in the borrower account for 14 days. It is free to borrow and it is risk free, because after 14 days Amazon is transferring back the book.

The website is really just a market for matching borrowers and lenders. They will probably make their money with amazon affiliate links and ads.

jfno67··on A Different Threat To Net Neutrality
It's not per se, but I'm not sure it's so bad to include them. The author has posted some clarifications on this point precisely in a second post http://continuations.com/post/1405992624/clarifications-re-n...
jfno67··on Android Chief Andy Rubin Sends His First Tweet — And It’s Aimed At Steve Jobs
You really think that only one market is better for the consumer? Do you think this is a universal principle?

Also, how the ability to discover apps is not part of the market, having my credit card in only one store is much less important to me than finding good apps. In fact if one store allowed me to use paypal instead of a credit card I would probably use that store.

jfno67··on Ask HN: Inspirational money making web apps made by hackers.
For the revenues yes, it's just affiliate revenue. At first it was a huge job to clean up the data for the locations. Back then about half the hotels had errors in their locations.
jfno67··on Ask HN: Inspirational money making web apps made by hackers.
http://www.seeyourhotel.com - Hotel locator with Google Maps. We (2 guys) did it in 2006 and added some features here and there. It's still making money, but we haven't added to it for more than a year.
jfno67··on "WiFi on steroids" gets final rules, drops spectrum sensing
Great at last some progress. Anybody know who will be responsible for the database?
jfno67··on Android Is As Open As The Clenched Fist I’d Like To Punch The Carriers With
I don't think Google is ever going to be willing to enter the carrier business. Although they hinted 1 or 2 years ago to a system where the global carrier would lose most of there power. It was phones that would operate on unlicensed frequencies or locally licensed frequencies. The phone could register with what is locally available by having a GPS and a database of operators by locations. It was a neat idea and I could see Google pushing this as a standard to be implemented by different operators. Sadly, I can't find a reference to the post I saw back then. Google certainly doesn't seem to be pushing this solution currently.
jfno67··on Hey Gruber, what about the users?
The point Dave makes in the original post, is that he sees new flash content being produced, so the boycott is not working. I think it is more productive to focus on promoting html5 to make flash irrelevant.
jfno67··on Reddit CoFounder Dips Back Into YC With Travel Startup Hipmunk (YC S10)
Just issue query to Orbitz via the affiliate API and they'll pay you for every flight booked. The TOS have some limitation, but if you can work within them you can explore pretty easily.
jfno67··on Reddit CoFounder Dips Back Into YC With Travel Startup Hipmunk (YC S10)
Look up the affiliate link on orbitz site and start from there. I think you'll find it pretty easy to at least start something out. If you have no special needs above the api they offer their affiliates, then you will be good to go pretty quickly. If not with Orbitz, try booking.com or expediaaffiliate.com
jfno67··on Nexus One Developer Phone
This limitation has been gone for at least 6 months, even on the previous phone. At least for HTC ION, (it's the only phone I had with this limitation).
jfno67··on DHH: Appstore is a warehouse of shit
Thanks, I would not have thought of that.

jfno67··on Google agrees to buy ITA Software for $700 million
You are right, it's not content. But currently many OTA have not much more to offer as content. The OTAs are pouring huge amount of money to get those reservations made on their site.

Do you think that Expedia and the rest are thrilled to see this move by Google. The OTA have stopped the disintermediation at consolidation and economy of scale, now they will have to go farther or someone else will.

jfno67··on MathTran
Thanks, those are notable differences.

jfno67··on AI That Picks Stocks Better Than the Pros
Also the effect of the system trading is not factored in. If low capitalization or low volume stock were used than the result would not have been as positive. You have to do the the trade otherwise you just get a nice system for collective2.com
jfno67··on Google Buzz
Yes that could be it, but I can tell you in new cities incentives are not big. When I see Buzz with Google Local Listings (with coupons), and place page I feel like I will not be using Foursquare that much. I'm probably wrong though, I was excited about Wave too.
jfno67··on Google Buzz
Doing consulting in insurance companies, I can tell you Facebook have been banned for a long time, and twitter more recently. As an outside consultant I have gmail, but the employees sometimes don't have it.
jfno67··on Google Buzz
Just tried it out on my Android, can someone tell me why I'll go to Foursquare now... This is the best checkin interface yet.
jfno67··on I hired 50 people today. This is what they look like
Mechanical Turk is a fascinating tool, maybe this is not the most interesting use, but it still make hacker drool. When you can't have AI, you use AAI (Artificial AI).

You can use it to train pattern recognition. It sure beats doing the work myself.

jfno67··on I hired 50 people today. This is what they look like
What I did was to have up to five person work on a hit. Many simple hits are done at 0.05$ so it's still not too expansive.

For text submissions, you can enforce validation rules (simple and regex). So you don't have to manually reject non-conforming work. You can also have the Turker fill in their work on a webpage that you control, so validation can be much more advanced. I never went all the way but sometimes I think about it.

jfno67··on Is Twitter saturated?
If I remember right, Compete is only reporting user in the U.S. which explain the low numbers.
jfno67··on Google Goggles
Worked pretty good on logos around the office. Also great for business card, recognised all the data, but the add to contact was not selecting the most relevant data.

It did great with QRCode too, but those were already easy to read. It's faster with Barcode Scanner.

jfno67··on Sugru - hack things better
Yes they should have left the prices up, I ordered some and it was 7 GBP or about 11-12 USD. This included international shipping.

They had different pack options, but I think all the options were the same price. I got the option 1: 5 X 10g pack and 5 X 5g pack all for 7GBP. They had one option for one 100g pack, so the others were probably combinations between 75g and 100g total weight.
