jfewhfuehg··on Study: Young users (9 to 18Y) ditch Google for AI, with unknown consequences
Depends on what we mean by critical thinking, as I said it is an abused term. Some just use it as a substitute to mean "thinking for yourself" when that is not something taught in a lesson but either becomes a habit or doesn't. But even then we all use arguments from authority and present it as our own because you are not realistically going to think about everything from first principles all the time.

I agree that districts do have a lot of pressure on teachers to keep pushing up test scores which leads them to being gamed either by teachers or children no matter the tools available: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Goodhart%27s_law

Most teachers now use AI for lesson planning (talk to any teacher). Some even for marking when they can.

Children probably use more critical thinking in the playground and interacting with other children than in class, because classwork is mostly slop anyway.

LLMs are not going to one shot answers in Minecraft through the chat UI. Possibly a more effective resource than checkbox activities at teaching "critical thinking" (abused term in education).

Me: "Most research that gets funded in maths is useless" You: "We use maths everyday"

Do you see how our statements do not contradict each other?

Also something I didn't know. We learn something new everyday and I certainly didn't study CS or anything. Also describes most of the research that gets funded these days.

In all seriousness, I don't think even AI hallucinates this much. We should genuinely be concerned for society.

No fucking way, I didn't realise. I was definitely talking about calculus.

What if I told you that... Most math research was useless anyway. AI is going to expose a lot of grift.

Oh you mean that bad thing where you pay people for a skill?

If you understand how curve fitting works, then it is a very predictable outcome.

If only there was a way to precisely control our output so it matches our taste and imagination. Some might call this technology, drawing.
jfewhfuehg··on There's a 100% Chance AI Agents Are Ruining the Internet
I honestly don't care. I grew up with the internet. I watched it grow from a place of discovery, full of outcasts and nerds sharing and creating cool things to a place of manipulation and content optimised for algorithms even pre-AI. I decided it is best that it becomes a place for machines rather than humans so humans can go back outside and doing greater things. We can mourn the peak of the internet but it will never come back.

DEI hiring exists in the UK. This is not something exclusive to America.

You realise you can change the writing style and not rely on the default?

>disadvantaged students

That's what it says on paper but that's not reality. If you are asian you are suddenly not disadvantaged even if you are an immigrant. It is just legal racism.

The fact that employers even get to play games like this tells you a lot about our current situation ironically.
