jfc··on Edward Snowden nominated for Nobel peace prize
What do you mean, "in all honesty"? Unless you were privvy to the evaluative processes for the award, what you're saying is pure speculation.
jfc··on The problems SparkFun has letting people bring dogs into work
Why not just contract with a nearby dog day care center and provide subsidized rates for employees? This way the dogs are cared for during the day and distractions in the office are kept to a minimum.
jfc··on Female Founders
Nonsense. It is not racism at all, especially considering the group is open to girls of all racial backgrounds.
jfc··on Female Founders
> "Right. Because letting the majority population define which terms an aggrieved minority can use to describe its own situation is completely sensible. What a surprise, the discriminated minority has a different view of the majority's behaviors than do those in the majority!"

---

Perfectly stated. Seems like the people at BCG are trying to help girls learn to code, with an emphasis on those who are black--because of a range of obstacles that might otherwise prevent these girls from learning.

And let's be honest here: if BCG didn't do this work to encourage black women and girls to code, who would? I see nothing wrong with their desire to encourage black girls to learn more about coding.

SEEKING WORK - remote, based in Connecticut

I'm a web developer and designer (4+ years), and work out of my own shop, Heta (http://heta.co). I primarily develop, design, and customize WordPress themes, or convert PSD designs or sites built with HTML/CSS/jQuery to WordPress. I'm also building an app and run my own server as a hobby, so I've gathered alot of useful, practical knowledge along the way.

I've worked on complex sites for digital agnecies (30+ templates, 25+ plugins), as well as on smaller sites for small businesses/individuals (10 templates, 10 plugins).

Technologies I use: PHP, HTML, CSS/LESS/SASS, jQuery, CodeIgniter, WordPress, mySQL, ZURB Foundation (3/4/5), Bootstrap, SVN or Git for version control, Fogbugz or Sifter for issue tracking, HipChat to stay in touch. Self-taught and resourceful.

Reach out to me at: hn [at] heta [dot] co (not com). I can send you links to live sites I've developed, sites I've converted to WP, etc. I'm usually around from 9-6 Eastern Time, so drop me a line if I can help.

I'm also building an app and run my own server as a hobby, so I'm closer to a full-stack developer.

I will be interested to see the results. But why is this in Ask HN? Seems to me it should be a regular thread.

jfc··on Roger Ebert dies at 70 after battle with cancer
One thing I admired about Roger Ebert was his ability to demonstrate wit without rancor, something very few writers seem able to do.

When I read his letter to Jay Mariotti--in response to Mariotti's less-than-dignified departure from the Sun-Times--I couldn't help but be impressed by Ebert's thoughtfulness. I found myself going back to the letter, sensing that I had overlooked something. I finally realized what it was: the tone of the letter. It was ultimately hopeful!

The conclusion of that letter made it clear that Ebert was no fan of Mariotti's, but it acted as more of a rebuke than an indication of deep disdain.

A rare talent, indeed.

jfc··on Next Time Your Mom Says Don't Go Out in The Rain, Spray Yourself With This
Good point. One of the recent Duke Startup Challenge winners was a company called Nanoly, which is developing a nanoparticle shield for vaccines, so that they can be delivered without refrigeration and safely. According to their website, they are careful to mention that they are using non-toxic nanoparticles, which makes sense as their work is health-centric.
jfc··on US patent lawsuits now dominated by 'trolls'
There is the legal concept of standing, in which a plaintiff has to demonstrate sufficient harm to bring a lawsuit. Don't know what the "trolls" are doing to meet this requirement.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Standing_%28law%29

*Not legal advice, or any type of advice.

jfc··on Ask HN: What words/phrases/concepts do you see in most Hacker News threads?
I'll start with this:

The word "orthogonal". I see it in numerous comments, especially the longer ones.

jfc··on The Code Of Conduct
I'm glad to see this Code of Conduct. Seems to me that most men are unaware of what women endure in terms of harassment, both from people they know and from strangers.

Putting everyone on notice that such behavior won't be tolerated is a big step in the right direction.

jfc··on Inside Team Romney’s whale of an IT meltdown
Except that there are several reasons Romney lost. The system crash may be one contributing factor, but it is far from the only reason his campaign was ultimately unsuccessful.
jfc··on An inside look behind Romney's loss: An epic failure of its Orca big-data app
I don't believe the app is the reason for the loss. It does, however, point to a glaring weakness of the campaign: organization.
jfc··on An inside look behind Romney's loss: An epic failure of its Orca big-data app
What a vulgar sentiment! President Obama is hardly a black Bush, whatever your thoughts about his policies. If you really believe they are the same--yet utterly fail to articulate your rationale--there probably isn't much reason to engage in a discussion with you.
jfc··on Four African girls create a urine-powered generator
These girls banded together and built something. Whether it's a rousing success or ends up being a bad idea, there is something positive to be said for their efforts. If you consider the cultural context in which they are operating, they deserve praise for this.

Heck, we praise people who build failed webapps here in the US, in part because it's an exercise in execution. When people build new things, it's great even if it doesn't work out, because who knows what it could lead to?

jfc··on Why political journalists can’t stand Nate Silver
Dr. Sam Wang, a neuroscientist at Princeton University, wrote a spirited defense of Silver on the Princeton Election Consortium blog (http://election.princeton.edu), where Wang also does some insightful statistical analysis on the Presidential election.

Wang sometimes disagrees with Silver, but supports the notion of a data-driven approach. Fascinating stuff on his blog, too: he's running Bayesian prediction models, Random Drift, and has a popular meta-margin that is worth checking out.

He also takes some delightful shots at journalists and others who are trying to keep the focus on political "horse race" reporting, instead of using more rigor. And he has a great sense of humor - his "Nerds Under Attack" post is hilarious - http://election.princeton.edu/2012/10/29/nerds-under-attack/

jfc··on Why political journalists can’t stand Nate Silver
This is an important point. Elections follow similar patterns every cycle, including much bravado. Silver totally disrupts that with data--it's not just the punditry that is angry with him, it's political operatives. He's pulling the curtain back and revealing the "wizard of Oz", so to speak.

If you really want to know which side feels less-than-confident about their chances, the best indicator is "leaks" from campaign insiders that talk about the candidates' future plans. Laying the groundwork early is an irresistible urge for those who think they might be in trouble.

jfc··on Why political journalists can’t stand Nate Silver
What you just posted is misleading. Silver's model gave the GOP a 2 in 3 chance of winning the House in 2010, predicting a net gain of 45-50 House seats, and the majority - http://fivethirtyeight.blogs.nytimes.com/2010/09/10/g-o-p-ha...
jfc··on Nobody’s going to steal your idea
It's quite conceivable that someone will steal your idea, if it's a good one. The question is the degree to which they can impact your ultimate execution of the idea--and that depends on a range of factors, from market dynamics to your own ingenuity.

Whenever I hear a common refrain in an industry that something doesn't happen, I know immediately that it absolutely does happen, but that acknowledging it doesn't fit with the existing culture for some reason.

jfc··on How a Google Headhunter’s E-Mail Unraveled a Massive Net Security Hole

jfc··on Founder's Fund Transparent Term Sheet

jfc··on Show HN: YouFM - A new way to listen to music on Youtube
Ah, makes sense. The song isn't in iTunes; I recently requested that Apple add it to their database.

Thanks for the clarification. This site is awesome.

jfc··on Show HN: YouFM - A new way to listen to music on Youtube
Brilliant. I listen to music on YouTube alot; this is something I've been looking for. Easy to use, very clean look.

As soon as you implement the playlist feature, I plan to use it.

One question: What sort of limits do you have on the searching? I have a song I listen to on YouTube and when I type in the song or artist, it doesn't come up.

jfc··on New York Magazine Deems Naturally Curly a Bad Investment For No Reason
Curly hair isn't limited to one ethnic group. There is a actually numbering system for curls (1A-4C, with some permutations) and it traverses different ethnic groups. The numbers are used to make product recommendations, exchange info, etc.
jfc··on New York Magazine Deems Naturally Curly a Bad Investment For No Reason
Or perhaps she read it elsewhere--there are lots of articles that talk about the Curly Hair Network. I saw an announcement about Paul Mitchell's investment on Twitter.
