jf271··on Ask HN: The hardest job you'll ever have.
Yes, they are. I raised three girls and got them all through college on my dime and by next year they will all have either MS or MBA degrees that they paid for themselves.

A much tougher job than anything they could throw at me.

jf271··on Hong Kong in Honduras?
This has been posted here before. It is an ambitious project. Honduras did a great job of protecting their constitution a couple of years ago but seems to be helpless against the gangs that are taking over the country. I hope this works for them.
jf271··on James Dyson reinvented the vacuum. Now he wants to remake the economy
It isn't just the labor cost but the whole supply chain costs. If the vendors that make the parts are in the same country and close to the assembly plant it costs less to ship from the vendor and there is less red tape around importation of the parts for assembly. This is one of the big reasons Apple makes almost everything in China.
jf271··on Why French Parents Are Superior
I think that saying no to kids is one of the most important things you can do to help them. Too many of the kids my kids grew up with never heard the word no during their childhood because their parents wanted to give them everything they did have while growing up. They ended up being spoiled brats and got even worse once the school system in the USA got a hold of them and told them what unique individuals they were. Disappointment is a part of life and how to handle it is something that should be learned early in life.
jf271··on One ending for a startup: running unsupervised until something breaks
I've been in this business over 30 years and have seen many applications I've created sunsetted. It is all a part of the cycle. Instead of worrying about it I make new applications for new companies.
jf271··on Average Is Over
Not directly. Most studies look at it as automation making up for declining birth rates. There are a lot of studies that say birth rates go down with increased education, surplus goods and increased leisure time so it might be a chicken and egg thing.
jf271··on Average Is Over
In parts of the world where there is a lot of automation birth rates are basically either flat or declining below replacement level. Maybe this is a natural response to increasing automation or at least understanding there is a need for less people.
jf271··on Freelance tax questions
If you are thinking you can deduct 80% of you rent you really need to find an accountant.

You should make an estimated payment before the end of they year. It will cut down on your penalties. Find an accountant quickly.

jf271··on Ask HN: What do companies really look for when hiring?
Any company wants the best programmer that is a good fit in their environment that they can afford. Budgets and environments tend to dumb down who actually accepts the position. I've turned down positions based on the quality of the management or the working environments before. I assume it happens every day.
jf271··on Student Loan Debt: Who Are the 1%?
I used to work for a college and understand how what colleges call "enrollment management" works. I told my kids to sell their grades and SAT scores and go to the school that would give them the most money. All got decent educations with minimal debt and all went on to graduate school no matter what college they graduated from. I don't know if it is the egos of parents that want their kids to go to schools that wouldn't have taken the parents on a bet 25 years ago or something else. If it isn't a Ivy school is just isn't worth going into a lot of debt.
jf271··on Ask HN: What is some good payroll software for a start up company?
Yes, outsource it. I've worked in payroll before and it is unforgiving.

Tell them to talk to the bank that they are going to use for the business. The banks usually have a connection to someone local that does small business payroll. No sense paying for ADP until you need all they offer.

jf271··on Ask HN: Any places to finish a CS degree online?
The easiest place would be the college you dropped out of if they offer online classes. They should accept all your current credits and you would only have to take your final year courses. I did the 19 year plan myself and the college let me use all my old credits earned at that college no matter how old they were. I know masters programs are different and have time limits but most undergrad programs don't have time restrictions.
jf271··on Ask HN: Do you typically work on holidays? How much?
If you have family or anyone near to you that feels the holiday is important then please take the day off. It makes life easier for them and I'm willing to bet that you could really use a day off, too. It is only one day.
jf271··on Supreme Court, Help My Mini-Bar Is Spying Without Warrants
I did a data warehouse for one of the big hotel chains and what you bought from the mini bar was part of the data they wanted. They wanted to make sure that the mini bar was stocked with what their best customers wanted when they booked a room. Some call it an invasion of privacy and some call it customer service.
jf271··on Six programming languages built in Cambridge, MA
Close. The MBTA owns the commuter rail but does not operate it. It is outsourced to the Mass Bay Commuter Rail Company.MBTA provides the ticketing but does not operate the trains. http://www.mbcr.net/
jf271··on Ask HN: When you are getting acquired does documentation/code really matter?
Great product and spaghetti code works for a while. They will buy you for market position but you will lose two years development down the line to bring the code into corporate standards. It will take to engineering managers to make it happen. From experience.
jf271··on Why was Boston's winter so horrible this year?
The problem this year is from Dec through Mar Boston never saw bare ground. Most years there is a melt or two that helps put up with the snow. Even in other big snow years there was a melt. It makes the winter seem worse when the snow never melts.
jf271··on New Yorkers under 30 plan to flee city, cite high taxes, few jobs as reasons
Providence is a wonderful city for living. I spend more time there when I go out than Boston. But Providence is no place for young people to make a living. The state of Rhode Island has the oldest average age in the country and is one of the least business friendly states in the country. The best college, Brown, doesn't have a business school. Brown does have a decent CS department but it can't overcome the negatives in the state.
jf271··on New Yorkers under 30 plan to flee city, cite high taxes, few jobs as reasons
It is already happening in Boston. Taxpayers moving out and takers moving in. It already cost the state a Representative due to not growing as fast as the rest of the states.

The powers that be can't figure out why so many young people go to college here and then move out when they graduate.

jf271··on Not Everyone has to go to College
I told my kids to stay out of IT. All of them were capable of working in the industry but that last ten years has ruined IT and programming as a profession. This country has ruined it as a profession by letting too many unqualified people into this country as H1Bs. Before you scream racist, there are way too many people with EE degrees are here as programmers without any chops to make a difference. It cheapens the profession.

My oldest is an Athletic Trainer and will never be outsourced. The twins are totally different. One is in textbook editing and the other will end up as a college soccer coach. At least they won't have to worry about this country undercutting what should be a professional wage.

jf271··on Ask HN: Entering the web development business from another technical background.
Keep coding and working at learning every day.

Like the pathologist the big thing is to feel the pain well enough to know how to fix the problem that causes the pain. Don't go too far away from what you know at first.

jf271··on Are grains making us fat? If so, we should be much thinner than 1914.
Not just fructose. In fruit fructose is fine. High fructose corn syrup is different and became prevelent in the 80's because of the sugar tariffs in the late 1970's in the USA.
jf271··on 133 US cities now have their own broadband networks
Why should I accept a bundle? Didn't they make IBM stop bundling? I don't need telephone service if I have a cell phone. Stop making me accept it as a part of doing business with a cable company.

The US prices at $150 a month include cable TV service with a lot of optional channels.

jf271··on Why no looting in Japan?
From another board:

"We have friends over there and what info we are getting is that they are having to deal with heartache and problems of Biblical proportions. If it weren't for those citizens who are in the older age group who know what to do in desperate times there would be more problems. The older people are self reliant and remember Hiroshima, Nagasaki...they know how to share with each other and help each other in the worst of times. Panic has not gripped them as it would a lot of other countries...look at Haiti..look at other regions where something less than this has taken hold and how they react."

jf271··on Competitive Start Fund (CSF) - Enterprise Ireland
It does take time. My application took nine months and that seems to be the average time.
jf271··on The decline of the $10 million IPO, and why it matters
How does it make sense to do a $10 million IPO when they are going to spend 20 percent of the proceeds to implement SOX?

There needs to be some change in the security laws to allow small companies to opt out of Sarbanes-Oxley.

jf271··on The decline of the $10 million IPO, and why it matters
A $10 million IPO doesn't make any sense when they will have to spend 20 percent of the IPO money on meeting Sarbanes/Oxley requirements in the first year. It it costs about $2 million a year to meet those requirements.
jf271··on Internet Identity System Said Readied by Obama Administration
If you live in the USA you drivers license is issued by the state you live in. There is no USA national drivers license.

Don't confuse state's rights with Federal Government rights.

jf271··on Ask HN: getting married tonight - tips for success?
Patience is really a virture. And you don't need to win every battle to win the war. Wait until it is something that really matters to you before raising your voice.

I don't know if I have been sucessful or not yet. I have only been married 28 years. My wife's parents made it over 50 years.
